  • Disneyland has a complicated history with selling toy guns. Because of laws that were enacted Disneyland tried to distance themselves from toy gun sales. But, there are a few old remnants of gun sales still in the park. Lets take a deeper look at guns and Disneyland.

I just want to tell you how much you brighten my day and make me feel a little bit happier every time you take a moment to tell your viewers that they are amazing. I was having a really rough day last Friday (or was it Monday?) and was watching your Pirates boutique secrets video and you said something similar and it immediately made me feel a little bit better!

The shooting gallery holds a special place in my heart. I remember going there with my dad as a little girl and he taught me how to hold the gun and aim at the targets. We had so much fun. If they ever take that attraction out, it will break my heart. If we're ever at the park at the same time, Chris, we should have a contest. ;)

How cool would it be if Disney could develop a Star Wars themed shooting gallery for Galaxy's Edge? But instead of rifles they would use blasters. That would be so awesome.

When I work as a security officer at Disneyland in 2002, I loved working on Tom Sawyer's Island because I would be able to dress up in the old US Calvary uniform (gold shiny US belt buckle and all) which included an old 38/357 Smith and Wesson prop revolver on my hip in a leather holster. It was the only costume in Disneyland that had a gun (minus the Jungle Cruise but the skippers didn't get to wear it)! Likewise, if you were able to work security on Main Street USA, you got to dress up as an old English "Bobby" from England and just like on the island, this was the only costume where the officer could wear a REAL Billy Club! There was only one officer per shift (two in total a day) that were allowed to work each one of those locations so you can imagine how highly sought after these assignments were. I'm so lucky that I got to experience this! Good times!

: This was a very interesting episode about guns at Disneyland.
Here's a quick fun fact about Tom Sawyer's Island. There's a fort on Tom Sawyer's Island and it's called Fort Wilderness. I remember when I was younger (in the 60's) they had rifles sticking out of the fort (embrasures) so you could protect the fort from the Indians. The guns made a sound similar to the sound that you would hear coming from the guns at the Frontierland Shootin Exposition. Of course like everything else the rifles are no longer there. FYI. 🐢 😀 🐢 👍

No one in my family used the C ticket so I used them for the shooting gallery in the 70’s. Yes they shot real Steel BB’s. I had a blast there and learned how to shoot. Great memories.

Interesting tidbit about toy guns in Disney parks - Back in 2019 my wife and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary in the parks. It was our first time staying at either Disneyland Hotel or the Grand Californian Hotel. We bounded each day with different outfits (Ariel & Sebastian, Wendy & Peter, Han & Leia, and Donald & Daisy). For my Han bounding outfit, I had a blaster holster, security near Disneyland Hotel would not let me through with the holster. I had no blaster, just the Han holster, but they said "nope." We tried again at the GCH entrance and they luckily let me through. I remember thinking, it is just a holster, WHY can't I wear it?! I'm glad I was able to pull it off. We have some epic photos from those days of bounding.

But did you know the REAL reason why cast members originally used the two finger point was because Walt would quite often have a cigar in his hand and when he would point to something, it would always be with his two fingers on each side of his cigar. Once Walt passed away this became an homage to him. And if you didn't know, now you know. 🙂

Another good one! I had to take a break from the stationary bike (getting ready for The Big Disneyland Trip), to comment. When I watched The Mickey Mouse Club everyday (no, not the newer one. The ORIGINAL one), Mattel was a big sponsor, so they sold the latest and best toy guns. Mattel six-shooters, Derringers, lever action rifles, and even nice leather holsters for them. And then the ones that shot the Greenie Stick-em caps, making them "real" six-shooters. Even the Mattell burp gun, which you cranked up to tighten the spring. I had one, which was rare, since my family defined poor. Now, a certain segment of society would die of horror. Moving on to the shooting gallery... One day back in the Army --the OLD Army-- I was shocked to find out that I was able to hit a target (about torso sized) at 1,000 meters, and previous to that training I had NO experience with firearms. And no, no scope. Couldn't do that now. Part of my Army training incorporated shooting a rifle from the hip using a BB gun and practicing until we could repeatedly shoot a half-dollar sized disk thrown into the air.

The shooting gallery is dear to my heart, first on (Main Street USA) then when it moved to (Adventureland) every time my mother and father would take me to Disneyland, that's one of the first places I would visit. I would stay there and shoot for as long as my parents were allowed. Then head over to Davy Crockett Frontier Arcade and again play there for as long as allowed, trying on all costumes trying to be like Fess Parker. To this day I have an old Davy Crockett belt, coon skin hat, mug, very old piece pipe, possible bag w/fringe, etc. Thanks for the memories

Trivia gun for you. Did you know that the fort on Tom Sawyer Island, when you could go inside, you could go up into the towers, and they use to have rifles affixed to swivels that you could shoot the rifles. They had real sounding action when you would pull the trigger. Of course they took the rifles out a long time ago, even when you could still go in the fort, and up into the towers.
Again, thanks for the memories "Bob". Haha

Just a correction, I am a muzzleloader shooter, the rifle is a copy of a Hawken. If you look at butt of the gunstock, you will see it’s curved, rather than flat. With these types of stock, you actually put it as high you can on your ARM rather than shoulder. If you wondering why old timer shoot with their elbow in the air, it to keep the rifle level.

Nice shooting! BTW, you should use your dominant eye to aim. For most people, it's the same side as the dominant hand. However, you can test it by making a small triangle out of both your hands and with both eyes open look at an object through the triangle, then bring your hands to one your eyes while still staring at the object. Whichever eye you bring it to naturally is your dominant eye.

I haven’t been on the island in such a long time, matter of fact I haven’t been on it since it was still called Tom Sawyer’s Island, does anyone know if they still have that fortress area where you could shoot toy rifles?

hi i was wondering if you guys could do a video on making dining reservations both on the app and the website? i’ve been trying to figure it out to get ready for my trip in july but it’s very confusing and it won’t let me see different times?
im not trying to reserve for july yet but i was just trying to do a practice run but it’s very confusing. can you just give a bit of a tutorial?
also i was wondering if it’s different for charecter dining? we are going for my friends birthday and i wanted to plan something special

I had a tour guide tell me that originally when the guns shot metal pellets that they weren't chained down. Mischievous children would shoot other guests causing a ruckus. Walt had them chained down after that.

Back in the day, you could use your camera’s flash cube and every target would light up - it was awesome

Not guns, but I think it's worth mentioning that along the cue for the Indiana Jones ride, there's a few casings/cartridges sitting on top of the furniture in an enclosed area.

I remember the shooting gallery with the metal pellets and they would bounce off the metal targets and fly back and hit me in the face. Those were the days!

In the many, many, MANY times I've been to Disneyland, I've never been to Tom Sawyer Island, never had a Dole whip, and never done the Shooting Exposition! To quote Chris: "Whaaaaaat??" I need to do all three when I go in a few months! Thanks for the wholesome content!

I went to Tom Sawyers island for the first time during my most recent visit. And who do I bump into on the island? Chris and Amanda, of course.
It is definitely worth the visit.

I still have the wooden and metal cap gun i got at Pirates of the Caribbean as a kid in the 80s, and use it in my Renaissance faire costumes to this day.
