This is my favorite chill out spot in Disneyland! My whole family has sensory sensitivities, so it's so nice to get away from the sounds and crowds, find a quiet spot to relax while the kids play, and recharge.

Former Cast Member here. I used to drive the Rafts to TOM SAWYER'S ISLAND, and it will ALWAYS be Tom Sawyer's Island for me. 💖 And there used to be a snack bar inside Fort Wilderness, where as a kid I'd get a dill pickle and beef jerky! OmNom!
I have honestly never been to Tom Sawyer's Island/Pirates' Lair; I never knew there was this much to do! I will definitely try to hit that stop on the next trip, whenever that may be!
You gotta have a bunch of energy to expend just to feel like it’s fun. I mean coming from a 30+ year old you gotta be like high on life to enjoy this island. It is really cute seeing kids run around and enjoy it though. :)
495. One of my favorite stories from the early days, was that you could rent a pole and fish and keep your catch. The problem was that people grew weary of carrying their fish around and disposed of them in flowerbeds and other places that created issues for the people who clean the kingdom.
I love Tom Sawyer Island! It's one of the best places in the park to break away from the crowds whenever it's too crowded and you feel like getting away from it all. To be honest, I'm really happy that Walt put Tom Sawyer Island in the park, it's a great way to be one with nature. Now, about that tie. I recently got my first job and I was told the dress casual. And I absolutely love that tie, I know that's one that I would wear!
I haven't been to the Island since my childhood. I was always too interested in riding all the attractions. I really need to make some time the next time I'm at Disneyland to visit the Island again. Thanks, Chris (and Miles)!
Everytime i go with my family, we always say we’re gonna ride the canoes or go to the island but we never end up doing it because we get distracted by other things. I definitely need to take a trip just to do different things other than the popular rides.
I remember exploring those caves back in the 70s when I was Miles's age. I only wish I could have explored it more often, but I will definitely go back for another look next time I'm there.

Favorite memory for my family takes place on Tom Sawyer's Island. Off on the far side my son, who loved the pirates movies, found Captain Jack Sparrow. No one was around so he got to talk with him while no one was around. Loved that moment and the island.

Quick correction - Will Turner didn't own the blacksmith shop, he was the apprentice. That being said, it is heavily implied that the blacksmith doesn't actually do any of the work, Will does. The name of the shop on the island is a nod to the franchise, which is why it bears the Turner name. The tie looks real cool. Can I haz? Nice vid, BTW!
Tom Sawyer Island FOREVER!!!! So great to know it was totally designed by Walt. Doesn't surprise me at all. It was my favorite place as a kid because you could just play and use your imagination. Back in the day, my parents would just leave us to play as long as we wanted while they sat in rocking chairs on the dock.
When I was a little kid I would run through those caves all day! Meeting Jack Sparrow over there was memory I will never forget! He asked if my poweraid was rum and was very disappointed when I said no.
Strangely I’ve never been on the island even though I’ve been going to Disneyland all my life. I’m definitely going next time. Thanks for another great vid!

Awesome video! I remember when there used to be paint brushes hidden on the island that you could bring to a Cast Member to redeem for a ride pass to your choice in the park. I've heard since that this doesn't happen anymore.
This video is so great! I really love learning the history and how much Walt was a part of the design of Tom Sawyer’s Island. Also I really appreciate you mentioning and thinking about which parts of the island are wheelchair accessible. I think often many don’t think about that sort of thing until it is actually something they, or someone they care about, have to take into consideration. Thank you for all you do!
When we went in August of 2019, I was disappointed that the Fort was just sitting there in a unkempt condition. A lot of my memories as a boy were in the Fort. I can't understand why Disney wouldn't keep it open, at least a water stand.
@@PeppersGhost The guns in the watch towers would jerk when you shot them. There was a door at the back inside of the Fort that connected to the tunnels.
My husband was in his late 20’s when I took him for his first visit to Disneyland in 1984. He really enjoyed exploring Tom Sawyer Island and joked that if his parents had brought him there as a kid they would never have gotten him off the island!
This has got to be one of my favorite videos ever! I wasn't able to visit Pirates Lair when I visited DL a few years ago and I was so sad. I can't wait to take my toddler next year for his birthday! Love you guys!!!!

When I was a kid (1955) we attended the opening of “The Park”. Tom Sawyers Island was my favorite. Mom would let go out there with a time to come back. I had a wrist watch and this was her way of teaching me to be responsible.
Great place to hang out and slow down from the fast paced crowds. To an old guy like me (or in Pirate Talk, an "Old Salt") I'll always remember this as Tom Sawyer Island.
my dad and i we’re trying to go on the canoes but neither of us had done them before. we ended up accidentally getting on the boat to go to tom sawyers island. we ended up hanging out and running around the fort and having so much fun for over an hour 😂
Awesome video! Tom Sawyer's Island/Pirates Layer is one of my favorite places to visit. My best friend and I will go deep in the caves and eat the lunches we've packed for ourselves, and just have the best conversations!
My brother always loved going to Tom Sawyers Island when we were kids. He loved to scare me by swaying the bridge while I was on it. While I remember his laughter fondly , to this day I won’t go on the bridges lol. My kids and my husband love it though ! Miles is adorable!

I think I remember going up into some sort of a fort there, and seeing a map written up by tom and it would lead you to the treasure horde that makes for good photos. I think I was about 11, and the whole experience of finding the map and then finding the treasure was really organic and fun. Dead man's grotto freaked me out a bit my first time. I got jumpscared by the skeleton and the gold bar.
I've never been on the island, never knew it existed when I was a kid. Sadly, it was closed back in June when I was last at Disneyland and I was so bummed because I really wanted to explore it with my daughter. I'll get there eventually!!
I’m 62 and grew up near Disneyland. My cousins that lived in another state would occasionally come visit us to go to the theme parks in Southern California. When we were young kids. It seemed like the raft took forever to take us to Tom Sawyers Island. Once there we wanted to stay there. Because it was boring for the adults (and it was a safer time) there was only one way on or off the island. The aunts or uncles or my Mum would take us over. Then stay at the dock (taking turns waiting there). We would run wild on the island letting off all our pent up energy. The other adults would visit other attractions. My grandma loved mr Lincoln (we kids thought was boring) so she would go there rest up whilst watching the show. It was a win win.
I videotaped walking around Tom Sawyer's Island in 1995 (it's on my channel). The fort used to have a fast serve counter where they sold drinks, and snacks. The retheming is cool to see.
That tie would make a great Vaders day gift. Those Barrels for the East India Trading Co has an E and an I. It also has four T's crossing to make the X in the middle.

That island is a great place to escape the crowds of Disneyland. Very highly recommend it. It’ll always be a special place considering it’s where I proposed to my fiancé. Right there at the top next to the treehouse. We are both pretty shy so I chose the quietest place in Disneyland I could think of.
The message trailing off by the Dead Man's Chest reminds me of the last words of Joseph of Arimathea about the Castle of Arrrrrgh in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I'm sad we missed this spot in Disneyland when my wife and I visited 3 years ago; her first trip and my second. Having her visit Disney World a few times by "Disneyholic" standards, I finally convinced her to go to Tom Sawyer's Island and Disney World in February. She was very pleasantly impressed and nothing like she expected.
I went to Disneyland several times as a kid in the 1960s. I can still remember the Train Ride through Nature's Wonderland. One thing I have a vague recollection of is an actual cave that connected Tom Sawyer's Island to Frontierland, but cannot find any reference to it. I'm not sure if there ever was one or not, but I seem to remember getting off Tom Sawyer's Island without the rafts. I can still remember the Mule Ride... and the snoring bear in the cave above the walkway that connected New Orleans Square to the Indian Village. (Can still remember the Canoes and Mike Fink Keel Boats.)
Chris you should do a video on lafettes connection to Tom Sawyer island, pirates (lafettes landing), and to haunted mansion! I bet a lot of people don’t know it’s some how connected
