  • This video explains the benefits and the pitfalls for leasing a car versus buying it. Please post your lease deals in the comments and I can double check the numbers to tell you if it is a good lease or not.
    If you are not sure what car to get I can also help you find one. Just post what your requirements are in the comments. Things like: I need 4 doors, good gas mileage, and leather will help me steer you to the right car.
    Here are the links I use for determining how much a lease should cost.

    At the time I made this video I drove the black Mercedes CLA250 that is featured in the pictures.
    It had a crazy high residual. I stayed under the mileage and handed the car back to MB after 36 months.
    I had to pay about $500 when I turned it in because I wanted a different brand of car then.
    Before I turned the car in I took it to car max to check its resale value. The resale value was almost $7000 below the residual. That means I saved many thousands of dollars leasing that car instead of buying it.
    The actual depreciation was much higher than the leasing company had expected. They took the loss instead of me because I knew how to find a good lease.

    This is a great video for people who never lease a car before. I learnt a ton.
    If you could film a video of yourself, that would make your video more genuine and trustworthy.
    Could you make a video of how you negotiate with the dealers? Thanks

    Bottom line it depends what you value in a vehicle. If you value the latest and greatest, have good credit, and don't drive much to put a lot of wear and tear on the car leasing is probably a better option. If you don't mind a higher monthly payment to eventually have no car payment and plan to keep the car for 10+ years then buying is likely a better option. The problem is too many Americans use a lease to acquire more car than they can really afford. They are lured in by the lower monthly payment but the problem is you will always have a car payment versus someone who buys eventually not having car payment after 3-5 years.

      true but you gotta think about. after 5yrs. car payment vs maintenance once the new car gets old no more payments but the up keep kicks in ...the lease still have payments after 5yrs but car is dependable..choose one!

    When you wreck a leased car the insurance company pays the Financial institution the remainder of the payments plus the residual of the car. You get nothing except maybe your MSDs back. However, most people don't do MSDs so that probably will not apply. I just recently had an accident where my purchased car was totaled. The insurance paid off the loan and gave me the rest of my equity back. With a leased car you never have any equity because you don't own it.

    So Mercedes has a "special" on $4600 down with a $429 lease cost(7,500 miles a year) on their C300 coupe models. After watching this, $4600 down sounds steep. the Cars MSRP is $42,000. I gather I should work on cutting that down payment to half and negotiate the MSRP cost to less and make sure they aren't screwing me over on the "money factor"?

    • @chrisdexter2940
      @chrisdexter2940 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know this is probably way too late, but I hope you didn't do that!! For reference, I just leased Toyota highlander that had msrp of $41,500. Zero down, $382 a month after all taxes and fees, no trade in... and that was 12k miles a year. I know I got a sweet deal, but what Mercedes offered you for the same msrp with zero down is $545/mo (not sure if that includes taxes) and 40% less mileage!! There is no point in even negotiating with these people if that is their "special."

    The bottom line is you should know before walking into a dealership what you want/need, how much is you budget, and what you are paying for.
    Economic logic: leasing is financing, plus other services- costs and trouble of ownership, resale risk, liquidity, and resale service (saves you the trouble of selling it; the difference between retail resale prices and the quote you get from dealers). You pay for what the company does for you in addition to normal financing, and this show up in the form of interest rate, the resale price (the % of MSRP), and other fees.
    Part of your normal financing plan is paying for the resale value, that's why you are paying more cash out. No matter at the end you sell it higher or lower (compared to residual), it is your problem (resale risk). Your money is deposit in your car and you cannot use it (unless you colleteralise it) (liquidity). With leasing plan you put that burden on the shoulder of the dealer and keep the cash of resale value by paying less monthly. So you want the interest rate to be as low as possible and the residual % they set for you to be as high as possible.
    Now bear in mind resale value to partially determined by how you treat the car. Also, at the end of the lease term you have to make a decision- unless you don't really need a replacement vehicle. This put you in a less favourable position in the next deal because you need to find a new car within a certain time, but if you own the title you can take your time. It also doesn't make too much sense if you plan to buy back the car after lease term.

    I am glad that you are willing to help us get the best lease deals possible. There seems to be a lot of factors involved in doing this to 'our advantage'.
    I would like to get the 2016 Jaguar Supercharged XJ when it comes out early next year. I will probably have to order it to get exactly what I want. Who in my area SO.CA. 92821 would be the best dealer to get this car from? I bought the car I have now from Mission Viejo Jaguar.
    I am now leasing a 2015 F-Type R. I don't think that I got a good enough lease on it because I really didn't know how to do this. I put $40,000.00 down on it. I suppose that I will lose a lot in changing this soon but this sports car is too hard on my old body and I want to get back to the comfort of an XJ sooner than the three year lease that I have. Please give me as much direction as you can so I can make my decisions sooner than later.

    Question about an ELECTRIC CAR w the $7500 federal tax credit. If I buy I get the tax credit... if I lease the leasing company takes the $7500 credit, yes? And in that case I am leasing the car at the full price, yes? Does this mean a higher lease rate and taxes on the full value? Do you think whenever the $7500 tax credit is involved that buying becomes more attractive... because I get that money directly at tax time?

    From the sounds of it, it seems better to buy than to lease. At least if you buy it out you can still trade it in two or more years later for either a newer model or a different one. I'm not too much of a car sales guru or anything, but if you simplify it, that should be correct, right? I mean it immediately eliminates the minute details of haggling over a leasing price when all you need to do is haggle over the pricing to buy the car out right for a slightly cheaper sticker price.

      If you are insistent upon a new car every 2-3 years a lease is the much better option. If you buy and put very little down on the car your loan could easily be upside down in 2-3 years. This can vary as some cars depreciate faster than others. If you trade in a car that you bought in 3 years and you owe more than the current value of your trade in you would have to roll the difference into your next car payment. At the end of a lease you can simply bring back the car and hand in your keys and you have no further financial responsibility towards that car.

      @Random8806 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well let's say that I have more than enough money to actually pay off the entire car right there on the spot but instead make an enormous down payment of roughly 75% of the car's worth shortening the amount of time to pay it off but making small incremental payments? Would there still be some weird tampering or fluctuations with the dealership as far as making payments go?

    • @conservakid85
      @conservakid85 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can afford the entire car why not just pay cash for it and not have any payments? What benefit is there for you to put 75% down and make payments on the remaining 25%?

    • @Random8806
      @Random8806 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it was said by others that it would be best to lease the car and it looks good on your credit and what not. So I wanted to throw in a scenario like this. You don't want to make long lasting payments and you don't want to keep it for too long by making small increment payments for X amount of years more than you would really want to keep it. You still build some credit and you don't have to deal with all of the extra chatter.

    If you hate car repairs, and buy new cars every 3-5 years it's cheaper to lease....If you have good credit lease payments are 30-40% less than buying. The avg cars are only made to run trouble free for 4-7 years. After that it's $4000 transmissions, $2000 fuel injection systems and $400 alternators. Any one in here ever replaced an infotainment center. I have. Some cars won't start without it operational. Good luck trying to repair a 2010 and up auto when the warranty is up....

    Hamer Honda's money factor is 0.0022 (5.28%) and I have excellent credit.

    • @LearningFast
      @LearningFast  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tal Aviv the bank sets a "buy rate" money factor. That is the actual money factor the bank is charging. The dealer is free to mark that mf up however they see fit. They get to keep anything over the buy rate.
      You can negotiate the mf all the way down to the buy rate. However, they are under no obligation to ever tell you what the buy rate is. Leasing does not have the same "Truth in lending laws" as traditional financing(loans) do.

    • @LearningFast

      It is a bad idea to lease a car and then buy it in the end because the residual values on a "Good" lease are way over estimated. You would be paying way too much for the car if you paid the overpriced residual. Give the car back to the bank/Financial Institution and let them take the hit on the car's depreciation.

      you will buy a used car from your own lease Whatever old parts of the car has generated is now your responsibility I say if you want to own give the car back buy cheaper and newer then your lease was meaning payment wise and maintenance wise

    Looking to lease a 2015 Mercedes S550 Sedan, MSRP $113,945, we negotiated car down $10,500 which brought it to $103,445. Located in Southern, CA. Since we don't plan to keep car for more than 3 years we'd like to opt to lease instead of buying like we usually do. Dealer has no idea I want to lease as we are negotiating as a purchasing price ATM. What are the magic number I need to know to plug into the lease calculators so they don't rape me on this highly depreciating asset. Any help would greatly help?

    We are looking at leasing a Mazda CX-5 AWD Touring. A very basic model with no options added that we've considered has a Total MSRP of $27, 045, ithat includes destination fee. A model with a few upgrades (paint, compass mirror, roof rack) has a Total MSRP of $27,915, ithat includes destination fee. I am curious what you think a good leasing deal on these cars would be? (What should I negotiate for CAP Cost and Money Factor?) Also, the salesperson said that there would likely be $1,200 in fees. I haven't asked him to break those down yet. I told him I want to put 0 down.

    I'm thinking about leasing a 2015 c-class mercedes Benz. I'm in the state of Texas and don't really know how to calculate the taxes. I was told they WILL NOT discount these because they don't have to since they are a new body style. I walked out of the deal because they wouldn't show me the residual number they would only show me the purchase option at the end of the 3 years. The lease would be for 36mths with 15k miles at $700.00 and purchase price is 45,035.00. I have credit in the 700's and they said credit didn't matter right now, they said they have a promotion that gives all customers the same money factor no matter the score. Can this be true?

    • @LearningFast
      @LearningFast  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sounds like a crooked dealer. First the new C class is very abundant everywhere. Plenty of dealers will give you large discounts on those models. They are required to tell you the residual. The bank sets that value. They don't have to tell you what the money factor is though.
      Yes credit doesn't have to be a factor. They use your credit score as an excuse for charging a high money factor if it is bad. If it is good then they just ignore it.

      +dsrduff maybe only if that certain model is needed to be off the Lott can't be sold as soon as they hope newer model they will give you crap about it meaning I really want the car vs I need to sell it get it off the Lott before the newer models arrive don't want you to go changing your mind about getting a newer model and I have a older model to get off plus I will have to drop the price on the one I'm trying to sell you to keep you from buying the newer model

    Im currently financing a '15 iLX with 18.5 K miles, 21K payoff that is sitting on the dealers lot waiting for a new airbag. I want to transfer to a lease for a '16 RDX. They gave me 2 options. 1) 18.5K for the trade in $475 a month, $475 down for 35 months 2) same trade in $360 monthly, $4200 down. I really want to lease a '16 H-RV, which will make more sense, butI was trying to see if there would be any loyalty discounts. Because the car is unsafe to drive I can't get it over to a Honda dealer to be appraised. So now that Ive explained the situation, what would be your best advice, am I going to get ripped off with the RDX transfer? Would lowering my payoff amount change anything or give me more negotiation leverage? What would you do if you were in this position?

      Use the links in the description to find out what other people are leasing the car you want for. Then just go in there and stick to the deal you think you can get. Get them to reduce the price of the car drastically and don't put anything down. Also make sure the residual is high(>58%) and that the money factor is not marked up.

      Leasing is almost never the cheaper option in the long run because you will always be making payments. If you buy and only plan on keeping the car for 5-6 years then leasing would be a better option to take advantage of the lower monthly payment. If you buy and plan on keeping the car for 10-15 years it will almost always be less expensive. Sure the monthly payments will be higher for at about half the time you own the vehicle but the other half will be payment free.

    • @invader_britt
      @invader_britt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Sellitti For me leasing, it's the better option because I like new cars but can't afford to buy one straight out yet. It allows me to get what I want while not paying as much upfront.

      Being able to afford the monthly payments is not the same as being able to afford the vehicle. You are essentially using a lease to get more car than you can truly afford. It's very hard to save and get ahead when you are committing yourself to endless payments. You need to do the math long term to see if leasing really worth it to you. For example my local Honda dealer has a lease for a 2015 Honda Civic coupe that is $2200 down, $217/month. If you were to take that same payment schedule over 9 years you would pay just under $30,000. The car itself could be bought for just under $20,000 and last way more than 9 years. Is it worth paying $10,000 more dollars over 9 years just to be able to have a new car every 3 years? Let's take it even further. Let's say you lease under the same terms for up to 15 years. You will have spent just over $50,000 for a basic model car over 15 years. So over 15 years you would be paying the equivalent of the MSRP of a luxury vehicle but only driving a new basic model car every 3 years. Maybe it seems worth it to you but to me that's just crazy.

    • @invader_britt
      @invader_britt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Sellitti Well that's assuming I'm starting a brand new lease which I just cannot commit to do, I'm planning to take one over. Besides, I think if the person has the income for it leasing isn't that bad. Both areas have it's benefits depending on the person and their lifestyles.

    What’s a good lease agreement on a Mercedes Benz GLS 550. 12K miles a years 36 months?

    • @LearningFast
      @LearningFast  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sergio Marquez the lease numbers on that particular car won’t be good unless you can get a huge discount on the car. Try to find one that is a year old but still considered “New”. If it sits on the lot long enough they will discount it $10k-$20k and that will make the lease a little more manageable. Don’t put money down on it. Roll everything into the lease with a huge discount.

    • @Hacendado0
      @Hacendado0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      mpgxsvcd Thank you for replying back so quickly. Good information Thank you so much. That much of a discount would bring the payment lower then what I was expecting to pay. Zero down roll everything into the lease.

    what if you lease for 1 year or 2 and then convert it to a purchase? Like if you intend to purchase but a lease gives you a cheaper monthly price to start and purchase later when the price is down.
