The fact that he can take you to church with his cover of "Easy" and then turn around and freak the fuck out with Dillinger Escape Plan on something like "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things" is something I'll never be able to wrap my head around

I'm an old school metalhead. It's hard to say because you have the greats. However if you're looking for the most highly trained and skilled vocalists it would have to be Floor Jansen.
You have to give Rob Halford credit for being one of the Godfathers of metal. Mike Patton is amazing but you have to give Jonathan Davis his props also. Maynard James Keenan is also no slouch.
I see a lot names here that I agree with. Bruce Dickinson is one of the first that comes to mind. Geoff Tate definitely comes to mind. As huge Metallica fan I love James Hetfield. Rob Halford, yes he's got a voice.

I've heard Tiny Music from the Vatican Gift Shop, No. 4 and Purple in their entirety and remember them quite well(and fondly as far as what they were going for). On top of that, to say that STP ever matched Maiden's blistering galloping rhythms, twin guitar harmonies and soaring vocals is baffling

Burton c Bell without a doubt.. his work with fear factory was ground breaking and changed metal forever with clean vocals added, it had never been done and now bands like slipknot all follow that same formula.
It's funny, if you look at it from a purely technical perspective the best metal vocalist is probably Axl, but I don't think *anybody* would call that dude their favorite even if they're G&R fans. His tone was precise, his range was crazy, and if you know anything about singing you know that the jumps he was making between notes and the way he was sticking the landing was shocking. But his timbre was like an enraged 80 year old woman having an epileptic fit. Points off on the technical side for not taking care of his voice, though.

Metal vs Hard Rock. Gotta put the bands/voices into the proper category, then choose. What defines metal and separates them from being considered “Hard Rock”? Sometimes it’s just personal opinion that can separate them. What generation you’re from may also influence your opinion. Lots to think about. I’m a “70’s/ early 80’s”girl, so I lean towards that time period. Plant & Scott are my favorite hard rock singers. Dio, Ozzy, Lemmy; Best Metal. Just my humble opinion ☺️
