Wow! Young Mahler was merely 16 when he wrote this. What a marvel of a score - such large gestures. Very indicative of his natural talent in writing for the orchestra - something discovered after a proper performance of his 1st symphony.

Completely agreed. This quartet has a symphonic scope, and the type of structural drama often seen in symphonies. It's a wonderful juxtaposition with the small chamber ensemble.

Honestly, after learning this, I can tell the piano part was written by a 16 year old.

Back before there was pop music to distort the way classical music creators approached writing, there were probably lots of 16 year olds that could write like this, as this was likely what city folk thought music was! Kind of the equivalent of 16 year old pop stars these days. The piano part looks a bit weird, like it's unnecessarily hard for what is being said. But really nice orchestration and beautiful composition.

For anyone else wondering from where in symphony 6, it’s one of the first figures in the movement 1 theme, just in A minor, about 16 seconds into this recording: th-cam.com/video/oep5Rude4mQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mVopFb9ZUBsok7y6

Around 4:20 at measure 114, the violinist plays a C natural on the second C.
I am wondering if Mahler intended a C# or C natural. There is a C# for the pianist right hand but my gut tells me C natural, as the violinist plays it in the recording. What do you think?
