Nobody knows what happened immediately after the Romans arrived in 43 AD, because no Roman fort has been discovered in this part of South East England. Time Team are on a mission to find the missing link. Local archaeologist Paul Wilkinson believes he has already found a military ditch, which would surround such a fort. It's a prime site, right next to Watling Street. However geophysics cannot find any evidence for a ditch. Join the Time Team for another dig into Britain's history.

gosh, in the 20 yrs or so of watching this show on and off, its the first time ive heard geophiz explained like that and i understood it.
Lovely to see Brigid pop up very briefly in this episode, I'm guessing she wasn't yet part of the main inner circle of archaeologists at this point.
I absolutely ADORE the expertise of the scientists on this show. They can pick up the smallest dirtiest piece of pottery and immediately know where it was manufactured, with what materials and the entire shape and size of the vessel it belonged to. Blows my mind and gives me goosebumps lol
I mean that tends to be what happens on scripted shows where you have a bunch of paid actors.... you really thing that the 5-6 people you see every episode are really the ones actually doing the work? 😂🤣😂🤣
@@richardgrace4500 they all have (had) doctorates in their various fields of expertise; they weren’t doing all the work but they certainly analyzed some of the finds
Indeed... I agree. As a hobby potter, I often giggle at the thought that centuries from now, some Time Teamer will pick up my scraps and determine that it's definitely a 'Dessie pot- circa 2022!'

46:44 I am pretty sure that's a plumb line weight from a groma, which was a Roman surveying instrument. They even had one on an episode at some point used by reenactors in a race against modern equipment.
Haha! Yes, indeed it is. Although I know this tool from using them as a carpenter, and didn't know the name of the Roman tool before. Thank You. I actually just left a big comment about them (and a couple of other tools), but I'm years late, so I'll copy/paste it here where someone might read it instead..
46:41 Pretty sure that's a "plumb bob." (see OP's comment for the actual tool and name used by the Romans. The basic tool hasn't changed in two millennia though), Not sure if they're called that in Britain, but you attach a length of string to the top, and they're used to build walls and other structures "plumb" (perfectly vertical).
You hold the string up where the top of your structure is, until that pointed end swings freely just above the floor, then after you get the plumb bob to stop swinging, you make a mark on the floor exactly below where that tip is.
It's a bit similar to the levels the ancients used where a string hangs with the same type of bob in front of a wooden triangle. Those can also have set angles marked on them so they can be used to build correct angles as well.
Sometimes carpenters and masons still use plumb bobs today. I always had one because I was a carpenter, then a cabinet builder and woodworker for 3 decades.
It's funny because people often can't understand how the ancients could build the things they did, but they had most of the same hand tools we do, so it just took them longer is all. It's also great to know about these things as a builder even now, because they're easy to build if you happen to not have a modern level or protractor, etc.
One last trick, since I'm going on about them: water finds it's own level. The ancients could make massive but perfectly level structures by digging a trench and filling it with water.
A modern quick fix if one doesn't have a transit, is a long clear tube filled with water. The first time I was shown this was for leveling the courses of shingles on a large house we were remodeling. Simply have one person hold one end, and another person hold the other end of the hose against the corners of the wall, and make a mark at the waterline when the water has found it's level (stopped moving). Then use a chalk line to connect the two points.
This is incredibly entertaining and informative at the same time. Shows passionate people doing what they love, with a lot od humor and self awesomeness.
I think Phil set Tony up just right with the "little fella" crack. Of course the "little fella," (Rick) isn't going to have a comment when Tony asked, "Did he just call you "little fella?" He just half groaned, half grunted in frustration. (He values his paycheck too much!) Then Tony said, "Shall we deck him?" Then the laugh fest was on. Then Tony finished, "At least we're not super anurated old hippies!" (Anurated?? Hmm.) Thus setting Phil in his place for once. Everyone was laughing in typical but classic TT Style. This classic good natured banter is what makes Time Team special for all of us. GO TIME TEAM!!!

I could have sworn i'd seen every episode of TT at least once, yet i've missed this one somehow. Too bad the audio is screwed up. I'm also disappointed that the baby wasn't introduced.
As i watch these now that i'm over 60 & am dealing with joints & back issues, i find my focus has shifted from what it was when i first watched decades ago. I can't help being preoccupied with just how much physical labor is involved. As an episode progresses, my knees & back begin to ache from just thinking about it, lol.

You really start to notice Phil adding safety equipment as the show goes on.
I love your series, it makes archaeology exiting! Your staff are so enthusiastic and I enjoy all the quibbling and comments. In Hawaii we have so little to search for because our history is so young and we are on lava with not very forgiving weather to preserve much other than stone items. Thank you for all you do.
They have an American series as well and HAVE done some shows on Hawaii. You should look into that!! I think it's 'TimeTeam America' but I could be wrong

Digital audio compression problems again, when you convert Broadcast TV to TH-cam formats. This is why Tony's voice overs are swamped by background audio - all sound levels are equalized in the conversion.

the sound seems to be messed up. Frequently when someone is talking, Tony is doing a voice over narration, making it difficult to follow.

It's done because the interview material is bad, with said person going off on a tangent of details.
You don't want to listen to a 2 hour documentary of tangent, you want to keep the core message. So lower the volume and narrate over it.

Yes, the audio is simply awful. The video editing is quite bad too. And it's not just this episode. As a cultural historian, I think that perhaps what we have here is an example of Time Team: The Much-Too-Much Cocaine Years.

@@stevenbollinger9776 Yeah, there's a period where Time Team had a lot of audio issues, some video issues, and I felt some episodes lacked focus. I think it was around the early 2000s (2002 being the worst of it).
I wonder if the Roman soldier using the space, wasn't the one removing the loose dirt.
But considering that there are questions regarding where the Norman invasion actually occurred, it would not be difficult to believe the first Roman fort location might be unknown.

This was not uploaded by anyone involved with channel 4 or Time Team, and not by anyone that would have an intern, it was probably up-loaded from a dvd rip and some one that has no idea screwed with the sound before it was!
That's British sound mixing for you. It's all over the place - audience covering the panelists on many of the comedy shows. Can hardly hear anyone speaking anything anywhere.

It seemed to me that at the beginning of the programme that Tony was confusing the first Roman fort ever built in Britannia with the first Roman camp. The first Roman camp would have been constructed a day’s march from the landing site, as he says, but this camp would then have been taken down the next day as the army continued its march westwards.
in the days, it seems the Roman army often built intermediate mini-forts as fortified camps after a days march...
the insides would be those of a camp, no permanent structures, but a standard encampment still had an earth bank with some form of a sharpened stakes defense palisade, & a shallow often double ditch....
Tony had a special program on it, I think it was done as part of his Time-Specials series.

I was trying to watch all the episodes in chronological order. The problem is that when I finished watching the E04S03 I looked for the logical next one, but it seems that it's not uploaded and the next one in your list of uploaded videos is this, so al the seasons between the third and the eleventh are missed in this channel. Is this so, or I didn't make the search correctly?
In later days of the Western Roman Empire, the building of marching forts fell out of fashion with the Roman legions. Just guards, trenched-around camping area, and pointed sticks.

None of us are perfect, interesting is more important anyway. These people are always interesting! Sadly some of them are no longer with us, all things must pass in their own time.
Its a lot like the down east, carolina hoi toide accent. Its a West Country or original pronunciation accent in England. Mountain talk has some OP with scots-irish influence

On my fathers side had a Virgina/Tennessee mountain accent which has many many similarities to differnt english accents and scots-irish / ulster scots influence.

While I was certainly convinced that the fort wasn't there, there were a few things I was left wondering about by the end. First, what was the date of that "embankment" vs. Watling St.? I don't recall getting an answer to that and I was curious. Second, I admit I agree with Dan (?) that his ditch did look very military in nature, and the very randomness of the various ditches in type and date, does make me wonder if at some point there was somewhere nearby military activity. TT may just have had the misfortune to be digging in the wrong spot where for the most part there was a Roman farm. Or perhaps that from the start, the assumptions about the fort have been all wrong. That it was more of a temporary marching camp. Up long enough to get people and cargo through to a point more inland, and taken down again afterwards a few weeks later. Leaving some odd remnants of ditches for a farmer later to reuse.
I had the idea that it may have been an early invasion satellite marching camp, sited to keep look-out over the area with the main force encamped below. Given the large force involved there would have had to have been a number of discreet camps.

Is there a reason that it went from middle of season 3 strait in to season 11 after the channel uploaded every episode from season 1,2 and halfway season 3 in numerical order?

Dear Time team, I was wondering if you looked into the plowed field across the road. From the air you can see a wide mass that heads towards the hill you were digging on. I know you didn't have long on this site or any of the others you have been on but i think you are focusing too hard on the site where you have been digging and should be focusing on what it means. Clearly there are ditches, which i am sure you could have seen by the aerial shots in the helicopter. To see things by air is almost a guarantee that the ditches were in place but the trenches the diggers uncovered also brought forward the various pieces of pottery used during the roman invasion. But there was a road that was obviously part of the settlement on the other side of the road in the plowed field. instead of moving across the site you should have been going lower on the site this is where the geo people come in to survey that area as opposed to the areas you were digging in It is great that the bits of pottery you found and the other items can date the site but more is needed to make a complete picture of what the site was at the time the romans invaded Britain. It could have been a place that was used as a market place by the Brits or even by the Romans. I am sure the romans had slaves after a while to dig the ditches for then rather than the lower ranking soldiers would have dug earlier, slaves were used for various jobs from pandering to house owners whims to digging ditches and building structures for the Romans. it still could be a Roman settlement with the soldiers camped out on the other side of the road with a road leading to the settlement for goods and services for the garrisons of soldiers of the Roman empire.

Sometimes I can hear Tony very well but other times I can hardly hear and understand what he says. Otherwise I really enjoy watching the Time Team.
I mean I pretty much turn down the volume (all the way down) any time he speaks because odds are whatever he says is going to be completely useless and moronic but what do you expect from a paid life long actor who really serves no purpose on the show other than to read off of a script because he has ZERO clue what is going on or what people are doing or saying which is why they always have to talk to him like he is an idiot

I don't know if you can ever find the FIRST fort. When you invade a place, you're not going to put up anything permanent, ecause you're still sussing out the landscape. I'd imagine that the first "forts" for some time are more likely to be encampments -- bivouacs that are easily put up and torn down, and less likely to survive.

Soooo....apart from looking at the bank and ditches, what was on the flat internal area? I get that the gardens would have removed any walls but not everything.
Most likely tents, the demonstrated walls were out of earth with wood spikes and the door house, towers from wood and they mentioned the fort was only used for some weeks before they moved on to conqer
I had a thought, no use now. The moon is gradually moving away from the earth, resulting over time in longer days. I think the difference between now and 2000 years ago is about an hour? So, maybe the first fort is an hour away? Just putting that out there.
The find at 48:43 also looks like a plumb bob to me ..especially with the pointed end on it.
I think you're right. Google says they've been used since at least ancient Egyptian times, and looking at images of Roman examples there are definite similarities.
Good episode but a huge pity regarding the sound! It seems to be a common occurrence with these time team videos.

May have been a temporary Roman camp. Tents and ditches ,with wood/brush ramparts, all torn down when they left and moved on??? Wouldn't leave much archaeology to find.
The audio seems off. Tony will get really quiet when he's doing the voice over, then, once he's done, the audio randomly gets loud again. When he's doing voice over while others are talking, his voice is too soft to hear and the conversation he's supposed to be speaking over is too loud. They mix together and trying to follow what either is saying is really hard to do. I'm sorry but, with the hearing troubles I already have, and with the audio not being what it should, I can't understand what's going on, nor can I enjoy this episode at all :(

Maybe I'm missing something but if I'd picked an anchorage for my fleet that contained my supplies I'd fortify that. Sure the fleet could always move but I'm going to need those supplies some of which need to be unloaded so the ships can return to the mainland and pick up more. I'd want a fresh water supply. Dig a trench and some walls tall enough to be an obstacle made out of whatever was handy. I wouldn't move inland till I had my arse covered. To me that's just basic tactics. Not claiming that's what they did. I guess I need to read up on that.
Totally. I wouldn't be surprised if the fort was in that area despite the issues, but maybe just a bit off of the hill it was said to be on. After all, it's rolling country so the fort could be on the other side of the road... or it could be under houses we see near the trenches in the aerial shots, etc.
Wouldn't the fort have been built much closer if not adjacent to the beachhead where they brought in supplies?, unless there was defenses there as well.

Was the audio engineer for post excavated from a ditch? Tony's voice over comments get multiple times drowned out by the scene audio and it's really hard to follow. But then, such a shoddy audio job makes me appreciate proper audio mixing in post even more so.

Did the story of this extravagant Roman invasion remind anyone else of the movie 300? maybe the Romans entered inland through a land corridor opposed to using the inland waterways? Hopefully some local mudlarkers, detectorists or archaeologist will find something to prove where the invasion initially took place. Interesting episode thanks for sharing!

If there was a Roman fort, as it is presumed, the whole area around it would be full debris created by activities related to the fort. Where is it? Maybe it was scavenged by the locals after the Romans left.
