- iRacingTV takes you behind the scenes as we build and prepare the BMW Z4 GT3 racecar for the iRacing service. The entire car building process is covered from data and sound gathering to the precise detailed work completed by our world class engineers. All of our combined efforts result in one of our best racecars to date. The BMW Z4 GT3 is available now.

when you watch this, you start to trully realize that there are people behind the sim, and you see they are as passionate about it as you, if not more... i want to thank iracing for being so commited to bringing all this to us... i'm here for almost 5 years now and i'll support you as long as i can, because you're one of the best in this field... keep it up!
now release cota and the bmw already, will you?! :P
The amount of effort, data and time that goes into these cars. Amazing stuff. Just look at all the data Chris had on the car, wow.
Here after the car was made legacy. Rip z4
And this 2024 the legend return
Can't wait to drive this little beauty. Going to be my mainstay for the GT3 series
Great video! Very detailed about everything that goes into creating a model to go into the sim.
Love these behind the scenes videos! Especially Greg Hill, he does a great job showing and explaining things. Keep it up!
and this is why no other sim compares to Iracing...... Great video. Please make more like this!
Brian Simpson!! Brian was such a great car painter for NASCAR 4 Sim...I was fortunate enough as one of the Co-founders of OSCAR (Online Stock Car Auto Racing), that Brian painted a car for me.
Thank you iRacing for doing all this to make me happy. 👍
cant wait to drive it :D cant wait to see what liveries people come up with!!
This car looks awesome. Cant wait to race it!
Great video and really interesting to hear the different stages by the people behind the scenes..... thanks!
Thanks, cool to see more about how the cars are made.
Loved the behind the scenes video, very interesting!
Love these videos! Keep them coming! It's always so interesting to see what it takes!
I'm curious as to why there appears to be a stick shifter in the car (around the 28 minute mark) when the car obviously used a paddle system? Other than that, looking forward to the car!
GT3 racing is going to get crazy in Iracing. The MP4-12 C GT3, Ruf GT3 and now this...
Nice Video! Can't wait for this car!
Fun fact though, they're moddeling the Z4 GT3 but the vid shows the Z4 GTLM (GT2) when they're at the track.
Brian Simpson: The CAD we received was for a GT3 car. We simply used the GTE photos as backup data to allow us fill in missing gaps. While the cockpit was really different between the GT3 and GTE car and therefore the photos weren't as much help, the rest of the car was very very similar. So it really helped us in the end.
***** Just check google, lots of pics of the M3 GT2 wheel on there. :)
***** Im not sure. I really frankly dont care. I gave up on the obsession of 110% realism because what is more fun than realism is good driving. If it drives 95% like the real thing and delivers 100% awesome racing against the MP4 and RUF, then mission accomplished.
See, they make sacrifices on the sim because if they didnt, no one would drive it. In the real world, a driver gets a ride in any car he can. Then he tries to use his OWN skills to push the car faster than say, a car that is just plain better. Senna, Schumacher - they did that.
I just understand that they will likely have to sacrifice some realism for the sake of creating an even series. On a computer we can log millions of laps and crash over and over again. Therefore, I think we extract more from our sim cars than 90% of drivers do from their real cars. No fear of death, crushing car, etc. No budget.
So if the retune the engine to be on par with the other 2 Im ok with it. I want to see as many different makes and models out there as I can. Only way to do that is to make them as even as possible. Otherwise, people WILL move to whatever gives them "the edge" and well have no one driving the other car.
***** The GTE only revs to about 7800, but the GT3 almost reaches 9000 RPM.
***** In the game it reaches to about 8600, I wonder how the did it if they recorded only up to about 7800 RPM. All things considered, it is an awesome car.
awesome .. cant wait to see whats next !!! great job!!
incredible episode!
My respect for the game devs just tenfolded. Way cool stuff! Happy to pay my sub now :)
Further confirming my iRacing budget is money well spent.
vary cool to see as im in school for game Design @full sail U man did i lean a lot from this thank guys
you guys should do similar to this for the Holden v8 Supercar so us die hard fans know when to expect the car seeing though we haven't heard anything since it was annouced :(
Nobody races in the v8 supercar series, so I dont see why that would be a priority for them.
Maybe a multiclass series with the cadillac CTS-V could revive it.
you should think twice about what you said, us Australians run it every sunday and monday nights for us on monday it's broadcasted and a very competitive series but the car is getting worse and worse with every build it needs ntmv5 unless they release the new car which every doubts they will until maybe next year.
*****
I'm from Aus too and I would find only 2 nights a week to be not enough participation for my habits. I'm on iRacing daily and want races going off hourly or 2-hourly which I get from the other series like skip barber, ruf and gt3.
that's simply because it attracts all the european people, the ruf and mclaren aren't that hard to drive but if you jump in the v8 for the week haven't learnt a track you'll need that week for practice so you actually have a shot at finishing the race that's what most of us top split drivers do to try and win the race.
*****
I'd like to see that too. The V8SC has so many leagues and official races now. There's talk of another one
this car, the ruf and mclaren
ferrari next!
magzire lets not forget sls and audi R8!
Kenny Nevarez i think we'll be all on our death beds before any of us get to see that.
Hey! No mention of how damage and crash physics are modeled and programmed! Id like to see that...
+Leuel48Fan Thats a huge can of worms and other departments.
Tyler Sorg It's a very important aspect of a racing simulator for me and many others in terms of realism.
Leuel48Fan cool. Yea i make games i get it
Tyler Sorg Make games? Cool, for what company and what department.
Just making games, 3D artist
Looks great!!
Coming soon!
Have they fixed the tire model since about 12 months ago? i gave up Iracing a couple of years back when they brought out 2.0 and the NTM... tried again a year later and was still shite.... gotten any better in the last 12 months???
Now its a legacy car lol really fun car to drive though. Was running it at Charlotte roval and it's fast and has awesome grip
Viper next please! Pretty please! With sugar on top! And then Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Corvette GT3.... THX
I absolutely agree with this, the Audi R8 LMS would be great to see next. A true GT3 series with balanced cars would be incredible
Love this car!
i hope they get the downshifts and upshifts right
Awesome. Can't wait to fasten my seatbelts =)
Man that looks great :)
Very Nice! Are you plan to do GT-R or a Subaru STI? It will be great!
Good video. Lerch is great!
Awesome!!!
oh i cant wait :D
OMG OMG OMG I CANT WAIT ... STOP TALKING AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
serious iam so excited :) i cant wait to drive the BMW Z4 or the other BMW´s.
greetings from germany !!!
O yeah, great job... ;-)
X Motor Racing Pro?
iRacing need much more german cars and european race series
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
Build the dw12. First please
please bring also in a german game- usermenu to increase the amount of users from germany. Germans love to race, but not all can speak/write english so good to know what is to do on your webpage after subsribing.
gather data, all day
How can I get that 3D model (laser scan)??? I have money!!! Anybody?
+keithskillz90210 www.turbosquid.com/
dubtube I want that actual model, not a computer drawing. turbosquid are most likely renderings, not accurate CAD models
+keithskillz90210 Could make it, or if you have a CD of the game source info pull it form there I believe.
This makes no sense, the bodywork of the GT3 car is different to the GTE car, that guy taking photos for the model is going to be real confused when he cross references the CAD with his photos. Pretty sure the sound and cockpit are different. Great job iRacing.
From Brian Simpson himself: The CAD we received was for a GT3 car. We simply used the GTE photos as backup data to allow us fill in missing gaps. While the cockpit was really different between the GT3 and GTE car and therefore the photos weren't as much help, the rest of the car was very very similiar. So it really helped us in the end.
+bugsbugs42 pretty sure they are just showing video they have, not fully the actual images and cars, its probably what they had on hand. Im sure the final model you play in game is accurate as they can get more so than you can notice most likely. (while working in the confines of a game obviously.
2 Years late haha
lol they modeled in QUADS
The US government needs to invest in iRacing O__O
Shame they didn't same beautifull mat black paint. Im fan of black mat paint and it looked absolutely amazin on a real car. Fortunately you can always repaint the car yourself :)
only thing we need is the nordschleife, i would pay 60$ for this track
and you will never own the track.Stop your subscription and you lose everything.
Funny how the car in this video (the gtlm) is not the one in the game (the gt3)
70k models for showroom only? Dont try to tell me you use 70k poly models for in-races...
Did no one tell them that the car they were photographing and recording was a Z4 GTLM and not the Z4 GT3? They're two completely different cars.
RUF vs McClaren. FYI they are NOT EVENLY MATCHED. Should have just saved yourself the time and made it a RUF Track Challenge and left the McClaren alone!
I only see one guy behind this car's creation process? Where's the whole team that supposedly goes into making these? One guy in 2 months is not going to be able to replicate a car and it's physics, which leads to my next though: I'm getting the impression that these cars are approximations of the real counterpart rather than direct hard data from the car itself.
If any of this isn't correct I sure didn't see it in the video.
THAT'S A GTE, NOT A GT3.
What the HELL are you doing iRacing??
So let me get this straight. iRacing, the best, racing sim on the market, uses a BMW Z4 GTE/GTLM to model a BMW Z4 GT3, fuck. Dislike
