  • Hey there and welcome to a brand new show on my channel. On this episode I will be comparing various versions of the classic retro game Head Over Heels, from Ocean Software. I'd love it if you would let me know in the comments if you have played these versions of the game, and which one is your favourite.
Head Over Heels is an action-adventure video game, released by Ocean Software in 1987 for several 8-bit home computers, and subsequently ported to a wide range of formats. The working title for the game was Foot and Mouth. It uses an isometric engine that is similar to the Filmation technique first developed by Ultimate.
The player controls two characters instead of just one, each with different abilities. Head can jump higher than Heels, control himself in the air, and fire doughnuts from a hooter to paralyze enemies; while Heels can run twice as fast as Head, climb certain staircases that Head cannot, and carry objects around a room in a bag. These abilities become complementary when the player combines them together after completing roughly a sixth of the game. Compared to its predecessors, the game offers unique and revolutionary gameplay, complex puzzles, and more than 300 rooms to explore.
Drummond contributed some famously surreal touches, including robots (controlled by push switches) that bore a remarkable resemblance to the head of Prince Charles on the body of a Dalek. Other surreal touches include enemies with the heads of elephants and staircases made of dogs that teleport themselves away as soon as Head enters the room.
Headus Mouthion (Head) and Footus Underium (Heels) are two spies from the planet Freedom. They are sent to Blacktooth to liberate the enslaved planets of Penitentiary, Safari, Book World and Egyptus, and then to defeat the Emperor to prevent further planets falling under his rule. Captured and separated, the spies are placed in the prison headquarters of Castle Blacktooth and must first escape, then break through the market to the orbiting Moonbase where they can teleport down to the planets to locate and reobtain the stolen crowns. Liberation of the planets and defeat of the Emperor will allow Head and Heels to return to Freedom as heroes.

Love a comparison video, I was impressed with every version although to be honest I thought the Amiga could've done a lot more.
Favourite would have to be the spectrum version, probably because I'm a tad biased.

I'll be doing a whole bunch of these once my croaky voice finally gets better! It was a lot of fun to play. I'm with you, the speccy version was my fave. Probably as it's the one I played to death. I was actually impressed with the Amiga version. The Amstrad was just psychedelic! Thanks for watching mate

Both the Spectrum and Amstrad version was written by Ritman. The C64 and Amiga version was by Colin Porch. It looks really weird to me seeing the Amiga version. It has lower resolution than the other versions. Actually the Amstrad version would have looked similar to the Amiga version if they had chosen the low resolution mode with 16 colours. There is also a green 720x256 highres Amstrad PCW version. Those that grew up with that version probably hates the lowres Spectrum version and the stupid change in colour. Green is all you need. Just as Spectrum owners is used to one colour is all you need and Amstrad CPC owner moan about few colours in many of the games ported from the Spectrum. C64 owners enjoy their unsharp displays in muted often brown colours and need their smooth scrolling and fast but limited sprites.

If memory serves me correctly, the Spectrum version was indeed the first, and when Colin Porch ported it over to the Commodore 64, numerous room layouts had to be altered and the number of villains in certain rooms had to be reduced due to the gameplay slowdown. Those same changes were carried over to the Amiga and Atari ST versions, no doubt due to Colin Porch working on them too. ;-)

Ah very cool thanks for sharing that info mate. The ZX Spectrum version will always be the best in my opinion, and the most fun to play

@@YouveBeenGamed Yes, it was one of those rare cases in which the ZX Spectrum version of a game was superior to the C64 version. 😉 Speaking of isometric games, I have a soft spot for the Last Ninja saga on the C64 too. 🙂

I grew up on the Amstrad version and it was my probably my all time favorite game of the period. I always found the Spectrum version to be 'anemic', which proves it's just what you are used to, I guess :) Also enjoyed the PC remake.

    • @YouveBeenGamed
      @YouveBeenGamed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Never played the PC remake. I might have to look that up! I agree exactly with what you said, you always favour what you're used to. That's the nostalgia factor I suppose. I love the speccy version, and found the other versions maybe too colourful! Crazy isn't it! Thanks for watching

This is based only on watching your video (I've only ever played the Spectrum version). The C64 version look just as nice as the Speccy, but it did suffer from some slowdown, especially in the robot room even though it, as you spotted, only had two robots compared to the Speccy and Amstrad's three. The colours on the Amstrad looked far too garish for me. The colours on the Amiga did look better than the Amstrad but they were still too intense. So, for me, the Speccy version wins.

I couldn't agree more. The speccy version is an all time classic, and it still looks awesome. Thanks so much for watching

Looks like the commodore 64 version isn't using hardware sprites for some reason, hence the slowdowns.

Did you know that if the 2nd Kickstarter for the ZX Spectrum Next hits 1.5 million pounds that the original developer will make a new upgraded graphics version of head over heels for the next! If your a fan of this game, now would be the time to back the spectrum next 2nd Kickstarter?! It ends next week Thursday, September 10th! There's not much time to decide left to decide wether you want to back it or not, and the next's aren't getting any cheaper on eBay these days. This Kickstarter campaign is the cheapest option to grab one!

Yes its got released recently. was fun to do the port, which is a extended version of the original game. btw none of the old ports used hardware sprites. Its all cpu based. Its still got a cool review for the C64 version, dispite a speccy port, but its worked this time. So its prove games can been succesfully ported to c64 dispite looking like a spectrum. The gameplay was keeps, and that was important.

The other versions seem very hollow and empty without the C64 sound fx and music, Same goes for the PC remake versions although the retrospec is almost there, where's that other one gone that keeps the original resolution but with proper looking colours...? Retrospec looks wrong. I like the Hugo Gil version but you have to lower your resolution way down... MSX II is the best looking original (non remake).

    • @YouveBeenGamed

but I thought you could press a key to switch characters straight from the start of game. And if you walk through th edoor on the first screen you get to the screen with a big wall in the middle and Heels on the other side. You could at least have had a look at the little fella.
