  • ION Audio USB Turntables make it incredibly easy to record your vinyl collection digitally to your computer. With the included EZ Vinyl/Tape recorder software for Windows and Mac, recording your collection digitally is as easy as a few clicks of the mouse.
    Sometimes however, you just want to listen to your vinyl, without the need to record it or install extra software.
    In this setup article, we'll walk you though how to easily listen to records playing back on your ION USB Turntable through the speakers on your Windows or Mac computer without installing any additional software.
    The instructions in this guide apply to all ION USB Turntables, not just the model pictured to the right.
    For a step-by-step walkthrough in article form, click the following link:

    This was great info - thanks very much for the video. One thing I noticed with my set-up, though, was that the recording device properties (on the advanced tab) were set to single channel so I only got my speaker output in mono when first using the turntable with the new settings. So I changed them to a 2-channel value (the highest quality one) and hey presto everything came through in stereo!

      To connect the turntable to the computer, we're just using a single USB cable. The turntable needle will make a low (mouse level) sound from the mechanical movement of the needle across the record. That may be what you're hearing.

      If you have an option to connect the turntable to a high quality audio system or set of speakers directly, that's the best. Generally, the shorter the signal path, the better. Some people just want to use their built-in or existing computer speakers, and this is a great method for that. If you have good external speakers that always are connected to your computer, but they don't have a spare audio input that you can connect a turntable to directly, this could be a good option too, and would let you send any computer output, MP3s, Pandora, Sound Cloud etc, from the computer, or play records...all through the same set of speakers.

    when i use this the needle just skips and runs into the middle. any idea how to make sure that doesn't happen?

    • @noterepeat
      @noterepeat  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A. If you have an ION turntable that is the same or similar to the one we're using in the video, the tracking force of the tone arm/stylus is preset at the factory. On a turntable like this, if you experience unusual skipping, it generally means either...
      1. Your stylus (needle) is broken and can't track in the groove. This is a wear-and-tear, user-replaceable item. Contact the manufacturer or a turntable accessories retailer to purchase a replacement. Or, it means...
      2. The tonearm is broken, and is not providing the correct downward pressure on the stylus (contact the manufacturer for service options).
      B. On the other hand, if you have a turntable whose tonearm is user adjustable (i.e. it has visible settings or a movable counterweight), then the skipping is due to either...
      1. The tonearm is not correctly adjusted to put the appropriate downward pressure on the stylus. Here's a general video for that: th-cam.com/video/ynIDWgo2lpo/w-d-xo.htmlm28s
      2. The stylus could also be broken, but this is less likely than the tone arm not being set correctly. In this case, you should be able to fix it yourself.

However, adding a song, or an entire folder of songs to iTunes is as easy as drag-and-drop...just 2 clicks. Here's a walkthrough: th-cam.com/video/8MvX3VpxvV4/w-d-xo.htmlm53s

    How do I convert a record album to a CD with this machine

    • @noterepeat
      @noterepeat  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rose McCrumb Convert the LP into your computer using the included EZ converter software. Once you've created an audio file on your computer you can burn a CD. 'How to burn a CD' is the same whether or not you have this turntable...as long as you have a collection of audio files on your computer to start with. If you google 'how to burn an audio cd on windows 10' (or whatever version of Windows you have), you'll get a bunch of complete walkthroughs right away.

    after doing this my turntable proceeded to play from the actual device and not from my computer. i cant hear anything, what am i doing wrong?

    • @noterepeat
      @noterepeat  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The turntable we used in this example has no built-in speakers of its own. Even with no speakers, you'll be able to hear the faint sound of the music coming directly off the needle itself (interesting, but not helpful I know).
      If your turntable has speakers built-in, you may need to turn them down. There may be a volume knob somewhere on your turntable to do this.
      Now, on your computer...
      If you followed along with the video exactly, and made the settings we did, your computer speakers should be setup to playback any sound coming in from a connected USB audio device.
      This could be thrown off if you have other USB devices (like USB speakers or headphones) connected to your computer. USB audio devices like turntables, speakers, headphones etc, all show up to your computer as the same generic thing. Then, when we go and try to select one or the other in the playback settings, it can be confusing as to whether we're picking the right one since they all have similar names. Try disconnecting any other USB devices from your computer (except keyboard and mouse) and going through the settings again.
      Less likely, but also possible...there could be something wrong with the USB Cable, USB Port, or your computer's built-in USB device drivers.
      If the above doesn't help, see the suggestions here: www.noterepeat.com/articles/pc-troubleshooting/95-troubleshooting-class-compliant-usb-computer-peripherals

    does playing through a USB digitize the sound, losing the superior quality of the record?

    • @sometimesoonfan
      @sometimesoonfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GREAT question!

    • @klmonsalud
      @klmonsalud 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the answer very informative! but i was under the impression that the analog sound has a greater range due to the compression of digital music; giving vinyl the ability to play back more souds than digital. is this not true or not important?

    • @RileyELFuk
      @RileyELFuk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vinyl audio, no matter what the fans claim, is not superior to digital. The 'warmth' that people speak of is really just distortion inherent in the format. As to compression, there isn't any on a CD worth mentioning, and in say bass heavy music, CDs are able to reproduce frequency ranges that cannot be pressed to vinyl. Much of the purist argument falls apart on so many levels, most music today is recorded digitally and even in wholly analogue recordings, pressing plants have fed recordings through a digital phase at some point in their process since the '80s. Some early CDs did have poor sound, often due to being knocked out quickly using limited analogue masters. What it comes down to is how well any recording is recorded, produced and mastered. Sometimes a special vinyl edition may receive special attention, but that's rare.
      Turntables like the Ion range are for convenience, or to cheaply extract digital recordings of your old vinyl, not hi-fi. If you are on a budget, buy the best CD player that you can afford. If you prefer downloads, always get the flac (a lossless format) or wav options. You can always convert to mp3 or AAC for your portable. Some downloads come in higher definition audio than CDs, but the value of this is debatable. I have a few and my equipment is more than capable of playing it back, but even the most trained ears in the world can't tell the difference.
      If you just want vinyl as a fashion thing, the more you spend, the better the sound, but unless you are willing to spend hundreds on a turntable and a similar or greater amount on an amp or speakers, digital will always give you a far truer sound. Vinyl audio is a specific aesthetic that you can really only appreciate when you spend a great deal of money. That said, I've bought about 60 vinyl records in the last year. Vinyl is cool. I haven't played a single one of them, as they all came with either a download, or a CD. I enjoy the physical aesthetic of vinyl, but have no interest in playing them. I keep my vinyl in mint condition, show respect to the artists by paying over the odds to hopefully fund future recordings, while streaming all my music to my hi-fi. Also, should a holocaust ever come, I reckon I could convert my old wind-up gramophone to just about play my records before I could ever rebuild the power infrastructure.

    Can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to listen to music downloaded from vinyl when you could just listen to streaming/downloaded music websites? It compresses the clarity of the music anyways. I don't want sacrifice the clarity of vinyl simply for convenience.
