    One thing I would add is that the turntable should be set to "Line", not "Phono"

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you think that makes a difference with the USB output? I would think that only applies to the analog out but I haven't tested it.

      @@Rickmakes , It did for me. As soon as I flpped to "Line" everything worked as you had shown.

      This is ABSOLUTELY true! It's not necessary on other models but it is on the AT-LP120XUSB. I spent half a day trying to troubleshoot the reason the USB was not recording then discovered it accidentally.

      @@haroldpowell6453 I can report the exact same thing with my 120XUSB. I get a tiny electrical whine though, coming through from the TT. I removed it in Audacity but it shouldn't be that way. There's always the fear of removing some frequencies from the music. It's frustrating to upgrade to new gear and still have problems. :(

    Hey Rick, thanks for the video! I'm unable to adjust the recording level of the turntable in Audacity. Do you know why this might be? or do you just rely on the noise reduction to take it down to the proper volume?

    absolutely mind blowing . you put that across fantastic. Even i could understand it , I bought a usb lead to fit between HI_FI & laptop put audasity in and started recording . Of Corse nothing was working . After seeing your video i know why i had not linked the system together. Thank you Rick for a fascinating video Gerald South wales UK

      I have seen a number of videos lately of people upgrading old iPods. I think I had an iPod Classic 5th gen. I sold it at a garage sale because the battery wouldn't hold a charge. I guess I could have fixed it but the guy who bought it sounded like he would get better use out of it.

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you only getting noise with USB? It's hard to say what could be causing that. Are you on a Mac or PC? I would see if you get clean audio when recording with some other software. On a Mac, you could probably use QuickTime player. I'm not sure on Windows 10 but I think they have a voice recorder app. You would need to make sure to specify the USB input before recording samples.

    When the needle is off the record, do you hear a slight high pitched buzzing sound? I unplugged the USB and it went away. Then I plugged in the USB and it came back. But when the record is playing, the sound of the music is so loud that you cannot hear the buzzing sound but I think it might still be there.

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you have a ground loop. Was this plugged into a desktop PC? If so, do you have a laptop you could test it with? When you do the test, run the laptop off battery power. This might eliminate the noise. Alternatively, you could plug a desktop computer into a portable power station (like a Jackery or similar).

    • @mostlyharmless0544
      @mostlyharmless0544 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rickmakes So, the USB cable was plugged into a tower PC. All components were plugged into a power conditioner. I am actually an audio guy and familiar with ground loops, but this was not a ground loop like I have ever heard before. I did a test where I moved my mouse, and the sound changed according to how my mouse was moving. If I didn't move my mouse, the sound was kind of stable with little glitches. But when I moved the mouse, you could hear more glitches and differences in what I'd call a digital squeal sound. Very quiet, but it is there. Somehow the sound of the PC "thinking" is going into the record player itself. It can be heard through the amplified outputs as well as when you try to record using the USB connection.

    • @mostlyharmless0544
      @mostlyharmless0544 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, opening an internet browser tends to make the noises change just like how the mouse did. Any CPU activity seems to make the noise change in tone and amount.

    Very well explained and demonstrated video!!! Thanks.
    I have a 2015 MacBook Pro that I would like to do this with using Audacity! However I’m not sure whether going out of a SANSUI QRX-7500 amp (1970’s vintage) would work. Would have to look for an RCA to USB connector (or somehow from speaker output). Do you know of those connectors?
    Or output more directly from a TEAC 2340R Quad Real to Real and from aTechnics SL-1200 Quad turntable both again RCA out only?

    • @Trekkie4
      @Trekkie4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know about tape decks, but when it comes to turntables, you can always get one of those external preamps, which (apart from conventional RCA) also have USB output. In fact, i believe Rega has a "USB" preamp, but I wouldn't know the exact model number.

    • @MRrwmac
      @MRrwmac 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trekkie4 Thanks but this system is all Quadrophonic. So I have to use Quad for all 4 separate channels.

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have an old M-audio Fast Track that converts RCA to USB. There are some cheaper options on Amazon. You can probably use two at a time to record all four channels at once. If you go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup, you can click the + in the bottom left corner and choose "Create Aggregate Device". This will allow you to combine multiple devices so the recording software sees it as one.

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is Audacity "seeing" the USB Audio Codec? Alternatively, you could try Quicktime. Go to Menu > New Audio Recording. There is a little dropdown to the right of the record button where you can choose the input device. You might see if that works. I haven't tried it with my turntable but I'm guessing it should work. Once you record in Quicktime, you can open it in Audacity or another program.

    • @DilatedEntertainment
      @DilatedEntertainment 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      RickMakes thanks for the Quicktime suggestion! I have found a small code to insert in my terminal to record. I do see the Audio Codec tho it doesnt record anything. Thanks to a youtube from a month ago i can now!
