    I read this story about Hugh Laurie and his dad. His father never told Hugh that he was into rowing; he apparently didn't want to influence Hugh into going into the sport or not. Hugh didn't find this out till he was rummaging around in his parents' attic one time, and found a sock with something heavy in it. It was an Olympic gold medal for rowing. He got into rowing at Cambridge all on his own, not knowing he was following in his father's footsteps.

    • @stonebay2111
      @stonebay2111 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Does that really sound reasonable? No one ever brought up the fact your dad was an Olympic gold medalist....never a..are you going to be a row-er like your dad? I have heard that story of other athletes and celebrities.....Eagles guitarist Don Felder's daughter supposedly said she didn't even know her dad was a famous guitarist till the Eagles got into the Rock hall of fame. It sounds rediculas....really you didn't know your dad wrote and played one of the most famous guitar solos in history...you have never heard of a radio....or wondered what the gold and platinum records all over his office were.

      If you will dig more into Laurie's life it is more than interesting. Forgive me for not remembering innate details, but it had been awhile since I found the information.
      His musical abilities should be applauded. I saw him play the piano while he was the actor House. Upon further reading he played other instruments but I am not 100% correct on that.
      His involvement with British accomplishments, if you will put it that way, he is one step from becoming a Knight.
      Not only is his intelligence very high, but he was a wonderful comedian along with the brilliant Stephan Fryer. We have BritBox, and that is where we found their small skits using homophones. Also the two play different roles in Black Adder. I may be mistaken, but Bill Bailey may be in the first part of Black Adder.
      I hope most of my information brings you some intriguement.

    Reuben's father while an Israeli Airman was even shot down over Israeli airspace and managed to safely crash land. However, rural Israeli's didn't even know they had an Air Force at the time, so local farmers tracked down the wreckage of his plane and shot at him assuming he was Syrian! IIRC Israel's Air Force at the time was only 4 fighter planes large lol. Reuben only got them to stop firing when he started yelling Hebrew phrases for deli meats, as that was the only Hebrew he knew when he grew up in NYC. What a tale!

    Interesting fact: Due to the horrible accident that caused Jayne Mansfield's death, tractor trailers and semis must have a metal bar called an underride guard across the back to protect cars if they collide with one. The car she was in was struck a slowing tractor trailer which caused them to rear end it at a high speed. Little Mariska and her brothers were asleep in the back seat and had minor injuries, amazingly. Check out the back of a semi next time you see one. I'm sure it's saved countless other lives! It's sometimes called a "Mansfield bar."

    During WW2 my father worked on British merchant marine convoys supplying war materials to England. During 2 separate trips the ships were torpedoed by German submarines. He and some of his other comrades were picked up from their life raft by another ship (again). After escaping death 2 times this way, father decided to jump ship in New York. However by coercion or get send back to Hong Kong, he was inducted into the US Army April 1943. During the whole duration of the war, father served in Al Levy's unit the 288th (Chinese regiment) Field Artillery Observation Battalion under General Patton. When father passed away we found his medals and some paperworks... He lived what we understand now with PTSD until the day he died. He must have witness some horrific nightmares. You being a top notch historian, could you tell us about the plights of unit 288th during WW2 so that our family and others have a better understanding of what Al Levy's soldiers went through... When I met my ex, he was getting divorced from his 1st wife. It was a bitter battle and when he got REALLY pissed, he would blast "Kim" for hours. I always felt that was a better reaction than actually hurting someone, which is what he really wanted to do.

    I'm not sure this counts but Jefferson Airplane's Spencer Dryden was the son of Wheeler Dryden, Jr. who in turn was the nonmarital son of Hannah Hill Chaplin. Mrs. Chaplin had been informally separated from her husband Charles Spencer Chaplin, Sr. (and it should be mentioned that at the time British divorce laws were very strict with legal divorce being prohibitingly expensive so only the wealthiest most connected folks COULD divorce) and had had an affair with Wheeler Dryden, Sr. which ended when he left her-taking their baby son away. Mrs. Chaplin was also the mother of a far more famous older son by her husband Charles Spencer Chaplin, Jr. better known as Charlie! Yep, it was only when Charlie became world-famous that Wheeler Dryden was able to track down and be reunited with their mother and he evidently wanted to immortalize his link to his half-brother by naming his only son with Charlie's middle name. However, Charlie wound up treating Wheeler as a servant and never even mentioned him in his autobio- and it would only be after his own death that the younger Mr. Dryden's closest friends would find out he was the half-nephew of Charlie Chaplin!

    10:23 correction, “they were forbidden to participate because of their ETHNICITY”, not their faith. As a Jewish person, I feel it’s important to emphasize that we are not discriminated against for simply having different religious beliefs, it’s because of our ethnicity. Throughout history, it doesn’t matter if a Jewish person converts to another faith, they are always a Jewish person.. and thus treated like one from our oppressors..

    Yeah there was nothing heroic about Jim Morrison's dad. The Gulf of Tonkin incident was a false flag operation carried out by the US, so they could have an excuse to escalate the war in Vietnam --- and Jim Morrison's dad was one of the architects of the false flag. Most likely, one of Jim's dad's rewards for his evil actions was Jim getting a foot in the door to the music world. And The Doors came out of the music studio that was run by the CIA at Laurel Canyon in LA. So yeah, we probably wouldn't know who Jim Morrison was if not for his dad's war provoking actions
