RV How To: Lippert Underchassis Storage Compartment

  • To add some needed storage space to our Kodiak, I installed one of the Lippert underchassis storage compartments. This will be used for non critical accessories that will not hurt to be stored outside like sewer hose connections, water hoses, chocks, leveling ramps, and extension cords. This will free up some pass-through cargo storage for other things such as outdoor cookware. I'll show you how I installed this on out Kodiak. I had to make some 1 inch thick spacers in order to clear the metal gas line that's bolted to the bottom of out frame.

    Great idea. I would be conscious of the lid staying closed when underway as the wind and vibration might allow them to pop open.

    Adam, in the '60's-'70's those underbelly storage were called "opossum belly" cause you know opossums have a belly pouch to keep their tiny newborns.

    When you drill the drain holes I suspect if you cover the holes with the plastic scotch bright knock off cleaning pads that most grocery stores sell would allow water to drain while acting as splash guard to help protect from road water.

    I like it. But you would think for the price, the bins would have a locking clasp and be a little more waterproof

    I hear ya about the "forklift squirrels"! I have two certs and I've never squished anything. In a past job I once got a 100-gal tank back under "Warranty" that had a forklift tine punched through one side. No freebie for YOU! 🤣

    Are you planning on welding a flat bar across the top since the lids seem to be able to be opened when pushed all the way back? Seems like the wind may catch it driving down the road and open them up.

    I would have clamped it to the frame with an i beam clamp on both sides, add rubber window seal around the edge of that door and place a locking hitch bar on the opposite side of that where the lock pin is. I would also cover that lock pin with a door knob lockout to make it secure. Probably do it myself with a different drawer and slide but thanks for the video it got me thinking!

    My Keystone Outback 328RL needs that undercarriage storage solution. The model I have has very little storage room. I might try searching for one that is more impervious to water though. My outback does have its spare suspended from underneath. Those spare tires mounted on the bumpers can cause thousands in damage to fiberglass if you accidently back it into something. Thanks for the great suggestions and have a great Big Haul trip you and dear Abby.

  • @mazchen
    @mazchen ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great idea, you can never have too much storage. Considering the price of that system those boxes look awfully rough and basic!
    I'd weld a bar across the rails to keep the lid shut when pushed back and instead of the pins use a through axle with one large end and a padlock on the other.

    Installed my set of full length drawers like this 2 years ago. Absolutely luv them. Keep all sewer fittings in small plastic boxes and the power cord w/ surge protector, inside the the drivers side. The other side I keep 2 patio carpets and the wheel chocks, x-chocks in that side. They do collect some water when it rains. Drill Drain holes in several locations inside the drawers. Very beefy and durable product. One thing to consider is the overall heigth. These are 10 .5 inches high so ground clearance is something to consider. Place them as close to the axles as possible to avoid scraping. Otherwise, a very good investment!

  • @gijoecam

    For the price they charge, it should be WAY better designed. They have a few huge misses on these. The lids should be designed to shed water, not funnel it into the box. Either the pins should be lockable, or the rails should be lockable to keep the bins from growing legs. (Seems like a notch in the edge of the bin with a lock thru the slide rail would work.) The boxes should have drain holes with baffles to let water out but not in. (Condensation or having them open in the rain).
    A- for the concept, C+ for execution.

  • @RobDeHaven
    @RobDeHaven ปีที่แล้ว

    It will be interesting to see how these work when you are driving in the rain for a long time. Wonder how much water will get in them. Cool idea tho to free up your front storage box.
