- John Goodman - spokesperson for Levees.org - is Creighton Bernette in the new drama by HBO called Treme. Mr. Goodman, whose character is based on the late blogger Ashley Morris, is an excitable fierce intelligent New Orleanian who is not afraid to say out loud that the federal Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the flooding disaster of metro New Orleans. The series debuted on April 11, 2010 and just two days later got the green light from HBO for a second season.

Give John Goodman an Emmy!
Perfect!!! Accurate!!! This is what needs to get out there. John Goodman was right on. Thank you.
David Simon is a genius
Wonderful! Sandy said it best - the character's message was ACCURATE. I'm so glad to see this message being delivered to the world through this show, but I hope it is taken as the truth that it is and not marginalized in any way.
Protecting New Orleans is not only justified, but it would be unconscionable not to.
Oh, yeah, Goodman! Truth telling has never been so ON! He's not acting, he's speaking the truth! LOVE IT! So glad this series is on HBO. Too bad it took nearly five years... better late than never...
I love their reactions as Creighton chucked the microphone 🤣✋
Sometimes, from the worst, comes the best. In October of 2005, one unemployed merchant seaman came to NYC on maritime business, and walked into my classroom, and my life. It is 2018 now, and I am proud to say I have the honor to be his wife - since 2008. Our NYC family responsibilities recently ended with the death of my mom, here in the city - she was 95. But she said more than once, "You will have a second life after I'm gone, you...go BACK to New Orleans with your wonderful husband.." and so I shall. Much of this TREME story is right on. Corruption, graft, inattention, greed, you name it. Also courage, heartbreak, resilience, hope, and new life from the old.
Awesome mix of tv and real peeps. And, oh yeah, the real story. John Goodman throwing the mike. Classic.
excellent! DEFEND NEW ORLEANS!!
I can't wait to watch more Treme.
I sadly don't have HBO so I'm thrilled to see this clip of Treme. I live in NYC but my gut instinct is there are more people than not who lived through Katrina who would agree with this assessment by Goodman's character. Bravo to HBO and all the actors in this new series. The truth will prevail.
I worked for Tulane and was on the Emergency Response Committee with state and feds working out "worse case scenarios" when they were building the Sheraton and the Westmark. They prepared for when the levy broke by "a ship's rutter" coming down the Mississippi; the city would build hotels with the first SEVEN STORIES expendable IN CASE OF FLOODING!
It made me sad all over again. As sad, and as frustrated as the angry people depicted in the film, (and those commenting on the video). There are so many issues like this. There are so many injustices in our country. I suggest that we pick just one that really angers and frustrates us. Then, let us work on that single issue, without violent words or actions, but with energy and hard work, never forgetting to treat others as we would like to be treated. More work, but better results.
Hey, they edited out the line about the Archbishop and the cucumber??? LOL
Go get 'em John!
The sad thing about this is that few people I know who have watched this are not taking it literally. I mean, David Simon is trying portray a vivid and realistic picture of what is and has happened to New Orleans. Too many people I know have watched it, saw it as a story and brushed it off their shoulder. Creighton Bernette, I dig your style.
Right On. Treme is wonderful and John Goodman has it right. The Corps of Engineers Failed!!
Sorry this has been taken off TH-cam! levees.org had permission and blessings from Treme and HBO! They gave us a copy of the show to inter-cut with New Orleans viewer's reactions to the series! Hope to clear this up with VIACOM!!!!!!
Five words to Creighton Bernette....Tell it like it is.
Creighton gets it, John Goodman gets it and now we just need the Federal Government - the US Congress - to "get" the need for a full independent review, an 8/29 Investigation, of the various failures of structures that caused The Federal Flood of New Orleans.
They censored the line about the cucumber and the Archbishop.
Perfect. I would have thrown the reporter's mic in the canal too. His questions were obnoxious.
IMHO HBO should come out with a public statement allowing bars in Katrina-affected areas to do public screenings. They show Treme at 9pm on Sunday night which hurts local venues and musicians, if we sit at home and watch Treme - how are our local bars are going to make money on Sunday nights?
How distressing that we get more valid information from a tv show than we can expect from the news media. Propaganda reigns in commercial news.
Congratulations ! Does anyone know the name of the song used in the beginning of this clip?
All anyone has to do to see the problem is follow River Road as it meanders through New Orleans. For the entire length of the river, there is only one building built on the wrong side of the levee... The Army Corps of Engineers
Excellent!
Its great that some celebrities (STARS), will get off their OSCAR pedestals, and join the likes of; Penn, Sheen, McCarthy & Carrey; to name just a few.
The reality right now, is that the most dangerous opinion in the world is the opinion of a U.S. Serviceman - Lance Cpl. Devin Kelly.
Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away.
Elvis Presley.
Nothings more deadly to a creature of illusion and obscurity, than light and clarity - Ayn Rand.
@ls1z28chris Thank you for this information. It sounds like HBO would prefer people subscribe and watch at home, but understands there are benefits to 'looking the other way' if some bars and restaurants offer viewing parties.
@LeveesOrg
What I've seen discussed over at the T-P's website is that HBO has a general policy of not allowing their channel to be aired in commercial settings like bars and restaurants because they do not want to lose subscription money. It applies to all of their subscribers, not just NOLA bars.
Evidently, though, the people who work for HBO are not assholes like the people who work for the NFL. No one has dispatched lawyers with cease and desist orders.
@egreenspot The show will air every Sunday at 10pm EST
Okay, having identified the culprit - Corps incompetence and/or negligence - what is our course of action? Do we complain, and wait for the next hurricane and the next mass casualty, or do we take our affairs into our own hands? We Americans are becoming better at recognizing that the Feds are not our friends, but do we have the courage to say "I'll do this myself" and accept the cost?
@Nndroid1 Absolutely agree - that British reporter doesn't ring true at all - the news coverage of Katrina, and New Orleans culture in the UK has always been sympathetic, and from this clip it looks like that character was just written in to be blown away by Goodman's righteous fury - why make a Brit such an obvious scapegoat?
@slowfinger2
I spent a year in Iraq dealing with an asshat E-9 who sent a Sgt to me every time a door slammed to find out if our base was under rocket attack. For two weeks he talked shit about SCUDs in the 1st Gulf War. A few rockets later and every loud noise is an explosion.
The moral of the story is that not everything people think is an explosion actually is an explosion. Sometimes they are doors slamming. Sometimes they are gigantic barges crashing into concrete.
All pro John Goodman is also a pro spokesperson on the true cause of the metro New Orleans Flood.
@piolenc By federal law, the people of New Orleans are forbidden from 'taking affairs into our own hands" By federal law, only the US Army Corps of Engineers can design and build flood protection for New Orleans. Only Congress can change that.
@csimo13 Not only is Tulane mostly white, most of the students are from another city
@IrinaNOLA I have heard no reports that HBO does not allow NOLA bars to show the Treme series.
When does this show air on HBO?
@Jimmy42118 If you compare everything new David Simon does to the Wire than chances are your gonna be disappointed. Enjoy Treme for Treme and don't think about the Wire's quality while you watch it unfold. PS I watched the Treme pilot and it looks promising.
@slowfinger2 More than 98% of the Army Corp of Engineers is civilian employees.
"A cynic might note that most the people of Louisiana are Republicans who want the government to stay out of their business." Most of the people in Louisiana do not live in or near New Orleans, but all of the people in Louisiana, even the Republicans, benefit from the metro New Orleans economy and taxes.
Accurate? I guess you weren't back by then, or didn't see it as bad Up Town.
Where is the Garbage piled to the sky, the Guard, the Curfew, the Cough?
Lemon Ice and Hubig Jazz, that's what we are,
If you say "it is New Orleans" then I suppose that will make it so.
Many of us cannot afford that kind of memory.
Who'dat?
Editilla~New Orleans Ladder
@warloc20 Did you forget your medication this morning?
Is it true that HBO does not allow NOLA bars to show the series? I went around a block - and that's what I hear from bartenders. If this it true - they just used us.
@owensaruba There is no credible properly documented study or evidence that the state or local governments were responsible (or liable) for the failure of the flood protection structures in New Orleans.
@tommybarresi request to grow up, please. Or wait! You work for the ACE, perhaps??
great show, but that reporter has the worst English accent I've ever heard
man made castrophe? that's stupid
How?
