PP, AP and Vacheron have always been considered the top 3. Why haven't Lange or Jaeger Lecoultre ever been considered? Are they inferior in some way to the current top 3?
Watch making is a stuffy old business so it takes decades to really earn a reputation. Lange were only formed in about 1990 and were out of the business of watches for a long period of time. Jaeger Lecoultre build watches on a par with Patek but they also build watches that are lower down in the spectrum. Even though I do believe that JLC are right at the top of watch quality it is that stuffy old business that views things. One thing I like about watches is that there is still a semblance of tradition present which most of society has seem to have ignored.
mohammad amin Bull crap. I bet you don't own neither Calatrava or Patrimony. All Patek Philippe Seal movements feature round finished and then high polished edges as against Vacheron's Geneva Seal movements that only features standard 45-degree beveled edges. Just for this reason alone, Patek just has far better finish than Vacheron in general. And certainly, Calatrava also has far better finish than Patrimony.
+Benedict San Diego I would add Jaeger LeCoultre to that list since their mechanics are considered some of the best designs in the world of watches. And the Reverso is amazing value for money and can double as a dress or sports watch.
+bighands69 Agreed 100%! JLC can finish a watch like Patek when it choses to, but its sheer engineering and artistic competence matches up with the other three across the board. Unlike those three, JLC still offers many high-value manufacture products below $20,000 and even below $10,000 in some instances, so the company cannot *always* deliver Patek levels of finish... but it always delivers peak performance for every price point. At the $100,000+ price points, JLC can challenge rivals as varied as Patek, Richard Mille, Vaucher Manufacture, and Bovet. I'd also add Lange to this list on the strength of product finishing and manufacture vertical integration. Best, Tim
Excellent review as always . I think that vacherons lack of icon household model is actually a good thing . Though this is pretty damn near perfection in my book.
Hi Simon, This one is a stunner. I can see the brand value in avoiding a single overpowering icon. Provided a watchmaker has the top-to-bottom lineup brilliance to carry the name and the reputation, a flagship piece isn't necessary. Vacheron definitely has this kind of product cohesion and momentum right now, and it helps them to avoid the pigeon-hole trap of becoming the "Fifty Fathoms" company a la Blancpain or the "Royal Oak" company like AP. Those product highlights are great for their parent brands' public image, but they can overpower and overshadow the rest of the lineup. When the Jules Audemars and Villeret lines stagnate and get clobbered on the resale market (to extend the AP and Blancpain examples), the true double-edged sword of brand icons becomes apparent. +1, VC. watchuwantinc Tim, Excellent review. Very informative. Thank you for posting. The VC Patrimony Contemporaine reference 85180 shown in your video is a beautiful watch. Indeed, a classic. But what do you think of the VC Patrimony Traditionnelle reference 87172 / 000-9302 -- with small seconds hand at 9 o'clock position and date at 3 o'clock position and in rose gold? I think that is a beautiful watch. Would you give a review of this watch? Or at least comment on it here? Would appreciate that.
cybergellan Hi cybergellan, I don't have an 87172 in my inventory at the moment, but I'd be glad to offer my views on the model. Compared to the 85180, the 87172 is the more versatile of the two. Its use of constant seconds and a date makes it the obvious choice for routine use. The most traditional dress watches are those that feature time only, and I understand that purists will grouse about anything that disrupts that orthodoxy. From a personal standpoint, watches are best enjoyed on the wrist, and anything that enhances the experience of any given owner is ideal for *that* owner. I like date windows and some form of seconds hand, and I realize that others do not. For me, the 87172 is the watch to have. In rose gold, it is an exceptionally warm, romantic, and friendly companion. I feel as though it's the ideal companion for all occasions short of rough play and aquatic recreation. Since its 2007 debut, it has earned a fierce following among those who feel as I do, and it's a great modern Vacheron. However, Vacheron remains the most conservative of the Swiss "Trinity" in many ways. In a very real sense, the watches that best embody the brand's character are those that hew closest to canonical Geneva dress watch tradition, and that's why I feel the 85180 has the edge as the modern day "face" of VC. But never forget that we should buy what we love, and that's the rule that breaks all the rules. The 87172 is a fabulous watch, and if it speaks to you, it's the best Vacheron for you. Best, Tim
watchuwantinc Thank you for your reply, Tim. Very well said. Both watches are very nice. But the 87172 in rose gold is the one that speaks to me. I also like the 82172 (no date window and small seconds hand at the six o'clock position) in rose gold. Among the "Holy Trinity" of watches, my favorite is Vacheron. Yes, Patek makes very nice watches -- some truly exquisite. But Vacheron just appeals to me more. It just has this old world charm and refinement to it. There's a sense of history, tradition and beauty.
+Agentxphile Agreed, this is pretty close to a flawless watch. Among dress references, this is pretty close to the summit of Olympus. Some will prefer a dark dial, and other may choose to dispense with the date, but that's what the 81180 is for! Best, Tim
+watchuwantinc Hi there I am not trying to be a tosser but you also pronounced Jaeger-LeCoulre wrong in your other vid. Maybe learning how the watches are pronounced and a spot of Swiss French would help you in the future?.
There are some older videos where I called them by their Richemont-approved North American trade name (roughly "yay-ger" for marking purposes), but I gave that up because I have to force it, and both company namesakes were Francophone. My American English accent's never going away, but there's no more "yay-ger" on this channel. Best, Tim
watchuwantinc Hi there thanks for taking the time to write back. I hope to see more watch reviews from you and your channel goes from strength to strength. Wantinc would you be able to do a watch review of the Hamilton Watch Khaki Aviation X-Patrol Auto with the black dial and with the black leather straps if you have the time please. Thanks Swissnor.
Thank you Swissnor! I'll do everything I can to keep the channel fresh, fun, and my updates frequent. As soon as I have an example of the Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Patrol Auto, I'll be certain to post a full video showcase and review. Thanks so much for supporting our channel! Best, Tim
This what I would call true master piece. Classic ,elegant, timeless I bet this watch will be relevant in 100 years.

Vacheron - great watch! Very nice review.
How well are they decorated compared to a Calatrava? Are they polishing the beveled edges better?
Vacheron have better finishing and decoration than calatrava. They are the oldest and founder of the Haute Horology.
mohammad amin They are similar

When you are paying a very simple price for a Patrimony or Calatrava you will find there is simply not much between them.
AP, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin.

Not a fan of these proportions for a simple 3 hand watch. It simply wears too flat and thin. The 36mm variant released for 2017 is near perfection.
This is the one.......dammit, I might have to buy it. At least I'll be able to stop at last.
Nice watch
