While I don't revisit them much now, this album meant SO much to me in that the release came the hardest day of my life to date... One of the most toxic and terrible relationships but also what I was planning to be my future for the last 3 years of my life. I lost all of my money, I lost all my possessions with value, lost all of my studio equipment. For a month all I had was this album. Sleep Token has an incredible talent with the ability to create massive soundscapes and absolutely FILLING that space to allow the listener to naturally experience the scale. With a voice so haunting yet beautiful, Vessel is the perfect vocalist to round out and compliment every microsecond of each of this band's tracks. I have a special place in my heart for this band for saving me when I needed it most, and for the absolute individuality they bring to music and with their unique sound and the experience it provides the listener with. The only thing I think that will top this album is if Tesseract is able to keep the momentum and style they shared with War of Being. This.... This is healing music. I can feel my soul restoring with every single track on Take Me Back to Eden.
Consider this. With all the references, such as Chokehold and Alkaline, the layering was also in sync with the lyrics in the chorus. Those last 40 seconds or so was a dramatic shift in tone. However, Vessel 1 told you multiple times in the song... he has a patient violence. Each section of the song was like an attempt to appease his relationship. This is the penultimate song in a 3 album, saga. So in context to this, you can hear the journey in the lyrics, but the intensity rises as he tries to hang on to this dream of a life with this person. Until it finally boils over. He tried to be honest in the first section, real in the second, revert to sweet in the third, but it just blows up at the finality. He broke, lashed out. Anger and anguish. But what he really did in that aggression was just restate what he had expressed from the beginning... I will travel far beyond the path of reason. I'll do anything for you, because I love you, please just love me. It's just you can't love yourself so I have to let you go... and thats the last song. The next song. The epiloge to this tale of sadness.
The thing is though most people don't have the context or even realise this album is the final in the trilogy as they came to sleep token with the summoning, or maybe alkaline but haven't really been there since 2016 so it is understandable how it could be missed.
Good point. People will come to this album and wonder what's next. There may not be a next. This was what's next. I would encourage everyone who has enjoyed their music or who has connected to the lyrics in some way, to go back and listen to the albums. Do it in chronological order, to see this story unfold. It was a beautiful concept that brings you through the trials and tribulations of an agonizing relationship. They even give you a binus instrumental album, cause the music is that good.
SUPER late but this right here should be read by a lot of people and I feel like it’s such a large overlooked part of this band. I’m a huge Sleep Token fan but for one thing and one thing in particular, their lyricism is INSANE. Something I’m a sucker for, I can see why objectively speaking these songs feel drawn out but that’s all on purpose and that purpose spans back to what I like to call Season 1 lol. I’m sure there are multiple bands who have done this before but ST did it so well
@Noah Leach it really wasn't though. it built beautifully and if you listened to the lyrics they tell an incredible story through the full album and it makes a lot of sense for this song to be the longest and more complex with different influences because it's the climax of the story. what is with the obsession of shortening songs as much as possible 😭
This band is more dedicated than any other band I've ever heard to the principle of "always leave them wanting more", which I think is why they use fade-outs so often. It's a fascinating approach to songwriting even when it leaves you aggravated
Sure, I just disagree with that choice. I don’t love the song any less, because it’s incredible. There are just so many more interesting ways to end a song.
Wow, you catching that deathcore-esk styling between the drums and bass was insane. I like to think that I have quite good music theory like being able to tell that minor to major shift towards the end of the song but learning never stops. thanks for the share brotha
You know I never thought about it, but there could be some merit there. I've listened to this song a few more times since recording. I Still don't love that section but overall, still a great song.
@@er4din903 True true. But its been a really long time since I've just sat and listened to music for pure enjoyment. Either doing these videos, listening to songs for students, writing music and hearing it in all its stages, or putting on an album and having to pause it every few minutes because my kid needs something, I'm used to a life of interruptions. Most recent example was listening to the new Cattle Decap. Amazing album, and I probably had to pause it about 20 times during the process. So while the pauses might impact my perception, im sure they do to a degree, I'm pretty used to listening through distractions just because that's how my life works lol
Apart from the melodies, production, Vessels voice, composition, the passion and the pure art...the lyrics are what stands out the most in this song imho. The lyrics on this album are surely something else. Also, the chord progression during the key change is absolutely beautiful and brilliantly chosen.
One thing Sleep Token does so very well is space. When it builds to the energetic point right after "Take me back to Eden, Take me back to Eden" is a good example of what I mean and what I love about them. His vocals are kind of in the middle, but they don't get drowned out by the instruments. Perfectly clear. The production of their music is just amazing, even from a pure listener with little to no music intelligence. They've always done this well, but it feels like they perfected this with this album. I always appreciate the videos! I love your insights
i love breakdowns of vessel's vocals, he is insanely talented and absolutely blows me away every time! it's so cool to hear vocal coaches talk about the way he sings and the techniques he uses! i also want 8 more minutes of that hardcore ending lol
You're the music teacher I've always dreamt of having bro, every video is such a learning experience 🙏 Let alone your ability to feel it as you're still dissecting 💎👑✨ This song obliterated me and I can say the rest of the album stands strong 💣💪
Comment at 12:56 - Just because you - yourself sound goofy - doesnt mean its not right. And genuinely I think teach that idea to people is good. Its the only way you get THIS band imo. I genuinely appreciate your insight and reactions - I just think the feeling behind this doesnt come from "what makes this track amazing" youre thinking in tech term (again entirely appreciated and loved) but there's a "thing" here that I don't think your addressing and conveying to the students. Do what you want - even if you sound stupid alone, dont discount sounding stupid in the right place if that makes sense - I love this channel just thought I'd say my peace :) Thanks again for doing this though! I appreciate your insight my guy!
I’d add that I think his vocals are top tier, that’s also never been what I loved about sleep token. Drums and guitar parts are always what intigue me about them.
I appreciate your take on ST. I'm an avid fan, but I like watching the reacts because different people have different things jump out at them. Perhaps not all their composition choices are your favorite, but I think that you've handled it pretty well in explaining that.... it doesn't have to be *your* favorite. What videos I've seen of yours so far have been wonderful - always learn something about cleans AND harsh vocals. Looking forward to watching more!
It’s worth noting too that his breath control and lung capacity really shows off during parts of this song. Each line during the chorus is quite long, hard to pull off in one single breath for me, whose lung capacity is just okay 😂 I also think the reason why the transitions work for me, as jarring as they kinda are, is because each section of the song still goes back to the same chorus in their own context. It feels like it pulls it all together
Same. I had little problems to pull off the clear vocals in Vore, sometimes even more without taking a breath as he does. But Take me back to Eden is endgame. Takes immense control. I managed by now most lines, except the last „my my those eyes like fire“ because of what is going on before that and the first „Take me back to Eden“ the one right after is eaaaasyyy because it is so high. But the first, because it is somewhere in between with the notes for me and sucks out all my air, kills me most times when I am unprepared. (Just big fan singing along ofc, not training/ professional or anything but i have the ambition to sing all of these songs well)
Seeing you vibe to Sleep Toker makes me happy 😅Loved the comparison you made with the river having the top and bottom water moving at different speed. I can't unsee/unhear it now. Also I know you deslike the fadeout, but in my mind, I imagine someone visualizing the Garden of Eden, screaming "TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN" as it gets more distant and away from his grasp. I actually feel it gives a certain cinematic visual to it.
loved the way you did this one, educational yet the flow was quicker which is great to keep newer viewers invested, older viewers will understand where you're coming from, just overall crushing on the balance between acknowledgement and minutia for vocal prowess
As a long time watcher and now follower I respect this so much. I've been a die hard Sleep Token fan for a few years and it nice that someone isn't just jumping on the " over excited, this is the greatest thing ever" bandwagon..... although I'm super happy they are finally getting some spotlight. I found myself taking to you through my screen because of your comments lol. I love it man!!
This is my 1st time to see your reactions and breakdowns... I would say that you have done well. Not many can pick up the intricacies of the vocal things that VESSEL is gaining some love from folks who can understand what he is doing. "Vocal Bender" ❤
Hey! Absolutely love your content even if I have no aspirations of being a metal artist, I still find your videos very entertaining, and they also help me find new music. I found you from your band Kardashev (from which your voice is my favorite part of their music) who I originally found through osu and I'm very happy I did.
Hey dude, pretty new to your channel but absolutely loving the content. What im loving about this space is how diverse the reactions are from artists, coaches, musicians etc.. the different takes and perspectives really open up the songs for me. love your analysis and looking forward to seeing more of your videos. 🤘🏻😁
Been following K.A. for quite some time and this is one of my favorite videos here. Not only because of the song, but the way you were able to dissect every aspect of his vocals. When people review Sleep Token songs, they often focus too much on the emotional side, but you're able to approach them in a more technical way, while still being fun to watch. Much love, Mark!
I can respect someone's opinion more when they can admit they aren't into something. It's much easier to feign hype because something is popular. It's nice to get a genuine reaction and an educated rundown on a very complicated song. I really am liking this album, I've never even heard of sleep token before this and I went back to listen to older songs and I understand what you mean. They seem to have found their sound.
I could be off base somewhat but I feel like this song when listened to with Rain before it and Euclid after it is really in total the culmination of every song and cover that they’ve done up to this point. Musically, lyrically, and in terms of the story told between the two together. This song is great on its own but when bookended by the other two it really conveys the emotion of it all
That outro definitely would have benefited for being a bit longer. Reminded me of the ending to Masamune by Periphery first time I heard it. It's my second favorite song on the album and by far one of their best songs. Love these videos, enjoy learning the techniques that are used to make screams sound so cool!
I am a new ST fan, but not really a fanboi... I just really appreciate a well crafted song and these songs have elements I like sprinkled all throughout... and something new to discover in each one. Not my point though... I really appreciate your delivery on this vid... your teaching skills are apparent. Very clear, concise explanations delivered in an engaging way. I am not a vocalist, my meager musical skills lie in the rhythm section, but damn I was interested in every thing you had to say about this. Cheers for being "this guy" and doing this. Reactions are a dime a dozen... but I actually enjoyed this while learning something in the process... and I dig the crap out of that. Def gonna check out the rest of your content and your band just to give back a little for the time and effort you put into this channel! \m/
And as the music fades or stops abruptly, the moment of realization shoves in and depression starts to overwhelm. That’s always the ending to a sleep token song.
To me, Sleep Token is great for inspiring creativity when I write. I do listen to a lot of rock and metal and they are my absolute favorite. I have never had an issue with their music as far as formatting, transitions and all that. I just listen.
II is a master of capitalizing on filling space in songs as well as foreshadowing and capturing emotions. You could spend so much time listening just to vessel or II separately
Your metaphor of the river with a calm surface and rushing water underneath is perfect. Also where can I get the Kardovox Kut with the 3 minute long outro 😁
Love watching your videos. Great analysis as usual. I love sleep token tbh but at least you give your own opinion and don't bow to the masses. This album for me personally is a masterpiece from start to finish.
The other really fun thing they do in this song is they play the full chorus (my my those eyes like fire…) in three different musical contexts…the first time when the guitars come in at the beginning, the second time over the sort of R&B/hip hop groove, and the next part modulates the key up, and when the guitars come back for the third chorus it’s in a different key.
22:25 I don’t know why bands do that either. A great example would be Pantera, some of Dimebag’s greatest riffs were only played once in a song as an interlude, or a bridge. This album is art in the best way. It took me a few listens to get it, but when I did, man I was like wow this band is good. And I went back and heard their earlier stuff and this album is next level stuff for them. check out the first track on the album “chokehold” or their song The Summoning
Nice to see you enjoying some sleep token haha. Honestly I’d listen to the whole album even if you don’t do reactions. I may be biased but I love the whole album. The apparition may be my favorite though.
@@KardavoxAcademy man I know you got a lot on your plate with vocal stuff as is, I can’t imagine with a child. I’m glad things are good though! Can’t wait for more content!
I’m a big fan of this album and this song specifically but I actually agree with you for some reason the transitions in this song feel more jarring to me than in others. Part of me wonders if maybe it’s because of how good each part is individually, especially the chorus, that when it shifts to a different verse it’s almost like “wait I wanted more of that” if that makes any sense?
As much as I LOVE this album (honestly one of my favorite albums I've heard in my life), I actually agree with you on the transitions. I think they're on to something, and I think it's really important to music overall that they are really asking us with this album to break down our close-minded expectations that artists "stay in their lane" and adhere to genre expectations. I don't find their transitions as jarring as you do, but I do agree that that is an area they stand to improve/build on for future releases.
Saying "Djent Is Not a Genre" is also the name of the new record of Periphery. I must recommend a listen of the new album, they are all amazing musicians and Spencer, the vocalist is just incredible! They are also masters in making long and impressive tracks, like Dracul Gras over 12+min long, Atropos also an amazing track and maybe my fav from the record Wax Wings. This vocalist has an impressive range!
like a half a year late to this, but i think these jarring transitions are well executed and super intentional theatrical scene shifts - you have a dreamscapey ("i dream in phosphorescence...") intro where he's he's blissed out but then starts drowning in his dream and wakes up into the second verse ("well yeah, i spit blood when i wake up...") from there he starts to have a healthy conversation with himself but can't really reconcile it all and just goes completely apeshit with the outro. a bunch of people hate the fadeout on this but it's a great songwriting indication that this is the rest of his day until he passes out again and repeats this process
If you liked this I think you'd really like the song after this and the closer for the album, Euclid. You're going to miss a good chunk of his clever storytelling in it (it does a lot of callbacks to the entire discography all the way back to One, and while the entirety of TMBTE ties all the works they've done together narratively, Euclid does it the most IMO) its transitions are lovely and the way Vessel delivers these impactful moments is excellent
To be honest I think you're gonna miss out on a lot of the small things interwoven into TMBTE without the context of their other work building up to this point. And I understand why you haven't listened to it! They aren't for everybody. But TMBTE feels like the culmination of so many things, and you just don't get that full experience without their previous work making you notice the careful choices in melodies, lyrics, and metaphors
Mark you should check out the “middle” Sleep Token - this is when a lot of first wave ST fans joined the hype train with songs like the Offering, Bloodsport, and Alkaline. They’re one of the few bands that has actually gotten heavier as they’ve progressed, but you might enjoy reacting to Gods which is probably still their heaviest song (tied with Vore). For me it took a bit to click because I didn’t really know what to make of it, and a lot of it is just how diverse their sound can be and how well they do both the soft and heavy parts. You never know what you’re going to get with them lol
8:00 You just made me realise that's another beautiful thing about this band I'm sure so many appreciate is that they make transitions obvious... But you've got no fucking idea what they're about to transition to haha
I'm with you on extended outros when they're fire. One of my favorites is still Gojira's Art Of Dying. It lasts forever and doesn't lose its punch at all.
The high-energy guitar riffs and thundering drums make this song an absolute powerhouse. I now think you'll love Nick Thurl Mavromatis' new song 🔥 Do a reaction video for it!
You have to react to gods by sleep token! Vessel is harsh vocal driven this song, it can give you a good understanding how far theyve come! This song is from their first album Sundowning! its pretty good song as well! Would love to see your take on it!
I love this song mainly cause it has all my favorite genres in one 😂 but I agree the transition was a little jarring, I personally liked it because it had a shock value to it. Great reaction btw! Informative. I hope you react to Ascensionism it's another favorite of mine and it has a more smooth style.
12:26 you gave me so much dopamine when I saw you notice beat more as a noob to vocalist I noticed wait why did it almost make this same like as you said 3 repeat I kinda if I’m just hiking the song repeat kinda the same lyrics over and over but I recently found these guys and I’ll tell you 2023 wasn’t my year these guys and Lorna shore a fan and I fell pretty hard for them 😂
water with debris moving faster is an excellent visual description. How long have you taught? You sound like a professor man it must have taken lots of learning.
Oddly enough the end sort of reminds me of pink floyd's wish you were here. Where the 'payoff' is worth the wait but so short that it just leaves you wanting more.
I do not get people that give other people shit for not liking their band, I find it is often the same people that "turn their coat" on the band when too many like them. It is just a bit weird to get mad because someone else does not feel the way you feel about something, then when too many feel like you about it , you change what you feel about that something. Anyways Leo has a very special voice, you could hear any song with him on vocals and hear that it is him, very unique! And like the video titles name, yes this is their best song yet, the only thing I would do differently in this song is make some of the transitions better, I would also make that first take me back to eden falsetto&metal part longer. It is by far the best part in the song.

"No amount of self-sought fury will bring back the glory of innocence" has me tearing up every time.

I also think the reason why the transitions work for me, as jarring as they kinda are, is because each section of the song still goes back to the same chorus in their own context.
(Just big fan singing along ofc, not training/ professional or anything but i have the ambition to sing all of these songs well)
i LOVE how fast you talk, it's so easy for me to understand and keep up with you 🙏
I love seeing all these TH-cam creators geeking out over my favorite band.
I don’t think I’ve ever learned so much about voice so quickly in one video. You got me mumbling now hehe
Yes please do ascencionism
Love your take on their song. You gave great feedback and I love how you add constructive criticism without bashing. Subscribed!
Revisiting this gem after falling back down the rabbit hole. I gotta give it up to the drummer. The use of cymbals in his fills is just magical
loved the way you did this one, educational yet the flow was quicker which is great to keep newer viewers invested, older viewers will understand where you're coming from, just overall crushing on the balance between acknowledgement and minutia for vocal prowess
Loved this, your insight was really interesting
Much love thanks for watching!
Man i love these videos haha. I always come back and binge your vids every few months. Keep up the good content homie.
19:02 when you stares into the abyss the abyss stares back 😂
This is my 1st time to see your reactions and breakdowns...
I love the callback to chokehold thats in the background right before the screamin section its so good
Hey dude, pretty new to your channel but absolutely loving the content.
What im loving about this space is how diverse the reactions are from artists, coaches, musicians etc.. the different takes and perspectives really open up the songs for me.
love your analysis and looking forward to seeing more of your videos. 🤘🏻😁
Mark, I know you will appreciate "Remember Me" by Currents. Their vocalist has so much depth. Please give that song a first take! You will love them.
Like when you yawned when he fake-yawned.
I was not ready for him to turn into a Cod Zombie at 01:17 🤣 great reaction though 👍
Best part Of this is your honest “noooo” of disappointment at the fade out XD o felt the same at first but it grew on me.
this was so enjoyable to watch, I love this song but so cool to see someone pick it apart on a more professional level
This song tickles a spot in my brain I didn’t know was there. Btw I can't wait to see your genuine reaction to Nick Thurl Mavromatis' new song 🤘
Their song "Are you really okay?" really grabbed my interest, not sure why but I love it
Your the best been in metal bands since 2006. Always wanted to improve
Yeah to each and their own. I personally am amazed at their transitions
This song and Vore are also my favs for sure.
The first thing I said when I started watching the reaction was " It's going to fade and he's going to hate it"
To me, Sleep Token is great for inspiring creativity when I write. I do listen to a lot of rock and metal and they are my absolute favorite. I have never had an issue with their music as far as formatting, transitions and all that. I just listen.
Got tickets and im traveling across the country to see them. WORSHIP
I was hoping you'd do Ascensionism too since it doesn't have a fade out.
That song is incredible
II is a master of capitalizing on filling space in songs as well as foreshadowing and capturing emotions. You could spend so much time listening just to vessel or II separately
i like your vibe 👍🏻 you like what you like, meh what is meh, i enjoyed your video, the comments are honest, each his own.. will be watching more 👍🏻
Your metaphor of the river with a calm surface and rushing water underneath is perfect.
The apparition may be my favorite though.
i fully respect your thoughts, others music is a personal journey, and i love hearing your thoughts
Hey mark! How is dad life treating you? My daughter is a year and a half now and we love your videos. She tries her best😂😂
Yo! Its good. Busy as all hell and always mildly exhausted, but its more rewarding than it is draining! Glad you and the little one like the videos!
I feel the same about the end. I could have ridden on that freaking groove for like 5 more minutes, at least!
like a half a year late to this, but i think these jarring transitions are well executed and super intentional theatrical scene shifts - you have a dreamscapey ("i dream in phosphorescence...") intro where he's he's blissed out but then starts drowning in his dream and wakes up into the second verse ("well yeah, i spit blood when i wake up...")
from there he starts to have a healthy conversation with himself but can't really reconcile it all and just goes completely apeshit with the outro. a bunch of people hate the fadeout on this but it's a great songwriting indication that this is the rest of his day until he passes out again and repeats this process
Catching up on my backlog and it's almost midnight, and I just got to the yawning bit.
Good sir, what have you brought upon me?
song is a crazy roller coaster!
Some great insight. I'd be curious for your breakdown of Darko (US). From a novices ear, sounds like a lot of dynamic scream n growls.
22:20 Bands do it to pay you back for the outro of Compost Grave-Song (which is way too short).
Love your breakdown of this! Surprised you didnt pick up on the slipped in lyrics from "Chokehold" in the end. Maybe that could be the next one? 🤔
You never know what you’re going to get with them lol
i appreciate how long u listened before pausing.
Hahaha when you said slur your voice - I instantaneously thought about Vedder and the hell Perl Jam grunge vibe.
8:00 You just made me realise that's another beautiful thing about this band I'm sure so many appreciate is that they make transitions obvious... But you've got no fucking idea what they're about to transition to haha
This one of my favorite tracks on the album. I didn't listen to them until I heard Will Ramos' cover of Chokehold.
Chewbacca sound at the end...I will never unhear this
Haha I'm sorry and you're welcome
You have to react to gods by sleep token! Vessel is harsh vocal driven this song, it can give you a good understanding how far theyve come! This song is from their first album Sundowning! its pretty good song as well! Would love to see your take on it!
I love this song mainly cause it has all my favorite genres in one 😂 but I agree the transition was a little jarring, I personally liked it because it had a shock value to it. Great reaction btw! Informative. I hope you react to Ascensionism it's another favorite of mine and it has a more smooth style.
12:26 you gave me so much dopamine when I saw you notice beat more as a noob to vocalist I noticed wait why did it almost make this same like as you said 3 repeat I kinda if I’m just hiking the song repeat kinda the same lyrics over and over but I recently found these guys and I’ll tell you 2023 wasn’t my year these guys and Lorna shore a fan and I fell pretty hard for them 😂
Undercurrent of sinister anticipation??... That's crazy cool!
water with debris moving faster is an excellent visual description. How long have you taught? You sound like a professor man it must have taken lots of learning.
You know a song is good when Mark starts riding his dirt bike.
Ascensionism is their best song, period. Give it a listen
The Apparition was right up there with it. Honestly I think Vore was the only one I didn't vibe with as much and it still slaps
I am torn between this and ascensionism as the best songs
Are You Really Okay? and DYWTYLM are low key their best songs.
Pleases review ascentionism… it has one of the darkest screams I’ve ever heard and it gave me chills. Give it a listen!!
Your friend ruining the dynamic shift at the end..........................brutal. LMAO. Thanks for the info though.
