      @@dominicnzl There´s an in-game book on them. but in short:
      Elixir = until long rest
      Potion = instant, or 1 minute(10 turns) (I haven´t actually tested it for things that normally last longer, like "speaking with animals". Maybe they last longer, but I´d consider that a nice bonus, not the rule.)

    "Rule of 3" for alchemy in BG3 is not what you said (combining 2 things will create the product). It is about creating materials from raw materials. You need 3 pieces of raw materials to create 1 of ash/salt/essence etc. That is the "Rule of 3".

    Hire the Halfling bard and respec her as a Transumation wizard. Transmutation wizards have a chance to create 2 potions instead of one. Being a Halfling, with the luck bonus, any 1 or 2 roll on the potion creation to proc that create double aspect gets rerolled. Nearly impossible not to get 2 potions instead of one. Plus you don't have to worry about carrying all those ingredients. Just dump them into her inventory every time you come back to camp.

    On a side note, you said you didn't use bombs very often. A cool move is that you stack a backpack full of bombs and when you throw it the backpack gets destroyed leaving all the bombs scattered on the ground (ideally near a hard enemy) and you cast some fire at one of them to cause a nuke explosion and fps stutter on your screen. Another way to detonate this is to have a ranged character (or anyone with a ranged weapon) carry a candle. All in the same round you can drop the candle on the ground, light it, dip your ranged weapon in it to ad 1d4 fire damage to attacks with it for 3 rounds, and then fire a shot at the bombs, and then even pick the candle back up to use later.

    Three quick tips:
    One, elixirs of strength are obscene. I respecced to dump my strength because I have enough hill giant elixirs to keep me going for probably the rest of the game at a 21 strength. Also recently found the elixir of CLOUD giant strength which sets strength to 27 until long rest. I will happily take 18-19 extra attribute points on me and whoever in my squad needs to turn enemies into pasta sauce today.
    Two, most (not all) potions create a tiny aoe when thrown or attacked, meaning you can stretch potions of healing or speed or whatever else to 3 or 4 people if you pack everyone in real close. There is no reduced effect for splashing the potion and making it a "punch bowl."
    Three, coatings are very nice on characters that attack many times in a turn. Worm poison adds 1d10 damage to every attack for a minute, drow poison has a chance of inflicting poison AND sleep, which gives you auto-crits. Basic poisons are strewn around everywhere so why not use em? Do not sleep on coatings.

    • @erikholum4772
      @erikholum4772 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ioverslept. It does not spread it evenly, at least for healing potions (all I've thrown). Each unit hit acts as if they each consumed their own potion. Though, from my experience it seems to only hit 2 people. Dropping a potion on the ground, tightly packing your party around it and attacking it to break it seems to spread it to EVERYONE. Again, I could be wrong about the number of targets hit when thrown, maybe I don't pack them tightly enough. But I do see the targeting reticle when I throw them and it still only hits at most 2 targets.

    One of the better parts about the Potion of Speed is that unlike haste it doesn't require concentration to maintain so that frees up one of your casters to focus on maintaining another spell. Though the potion only last for 3 rounds versus haste's 10. But knowing that it'll last for three rounds means you can plan ahead better and not risk losing the concentration and becoming lethargic in the middle of a tense situation.

    The strongest thing you can brew if you can get the materials is the Haste Spore bottle, throw it on the ground, walk in and out or across it each turn and you get a haste without the downside of being fatigued if it ends. There are a few situational potions and flasks, but the haste is so good, especially for fighters, spell casters and barbarians.
    Bit less useful if you rely on bonus action like monks, rogues or bards, but still good for extra actions.

      @Quandry1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Monks benefit quite a lot from haste. They do still attack twice a round with their actions. So when combined with things like fangs of the fire snake, bonus damage equipment, and such... you are upping their damage potential more than you might think.
      Let's say a monk is dealing 1d6 unarmed and has just 18 dex and use a bit of simplified math. This monk is averaging 7 damage every attack. Make this monk at least level 5. This means you are likely to do 21 damage a turn because of 3 attacks. 28 if you use flurry of blows. Haste for another action to get two more attacks means 35 without flurry and 42 with flurry. Just as your base average a turn.
      Once you start adding in other variables to damage on top of it. It mostly just goes up from there. Fangs of the fire snake adds an average of 5 per hit of fire damage. The acid ring (I believe it works for monks) is another 2. There are gloves that average another 2 (1d4) of necrotic damage... this becomes 16 average damage per hit. For 48 damage for just 3 hits... all the way up to an average of 96 for 6 hits, 32 of which would come from haste.
      Now obviously not all of this is necessarily going to be found on a level 5 monk. I'm just using it as a bit of an example as to why haste the way they have it is still very strong for monks.
      Edit: the thing to keep in mind about monks tends to be more about consistency than Sikes overall. They aren't usually going to spike quite as high but they also aren't usually going to dip as low in the damage range either.

Maybe after eating a giant's toe to learn its properties, you're hellbent on actually using the knowledge. XD But I'll check out the options in BG3 today.

    Any of the debuff poisons (Drow, Kalabasan's, etc) is really good on a bow. Arrow of Many Targets means I can inflict status on up to 4 targets per shot (which is pretty good CC, and is really good with Kalabasan's poison applying Paralysis). Shame that Drow is the most common CC poison out there in Act 3, but it's still strong.
    Also, I have 100 in my Alchemy Pouch. I wish ingredients we purchased from a vendor went into them automatically.

    A smart move is to talk to Withers and create a Transformation Subclass Wizard/Cleric and select the Medicine skill. Then use them to craft all your potions. Have them use their cleric spells to increase the chance for success. They will have a fairly high chance to create additional potions. More bang for your buck!

    Best way to utilize this is getting the halfling heirling from withers. Respect to wizard transmutation for 3 levels then back to bard for self skill boost and make sure to spec into medicine then guidance and turn based mode. You can also add a level of rogue for expertise.
    Then double down on potions and elixirs with a successful medicine check. Just make sure to maximize the wisdom stat.

    I didn't even use the Ones i collected from corpses. I usually heal between battles. On the other hand, During battles Potion of Speed is invaluable. Haste only for 5 turns but without concentration is amazing. Hyena ears are not that common though. There are a couple of encounters where you fight Bugbears in Act 1. Otherwise it's just from traders. Buy all of those ears when you see them.

    chugging a speed potion (for the first time) on my eldritch knight tavern brawler right before the adamantine golem let me destroy it in 2 turns without using the big hammer. I already knew I would be fighting it because of another playthrough with a friend, so i just made a light hammer my bound weapon for the bludgeoning damage and pre-potted, cast hunter's mark from the bow in the druid's grove, then tossed my hammer 6 times in one turn (action surge). Definitely worth using some more.

    Elixir of Giant Strength definitely should have been mentioned as well.

    The Drow Poison saved my ass during the fight with a Spectator. Got lucky and it fell asleep on the sneak attack, then I wailed it on it with my party while it was down before it can de-petrify folks. The only reason why I'm kinda sleeping on alchemy is because I keep stealing the potions/elixirs/coatings from the shopkeepers.

    I finished my first playthrough without crafting a single potion. Hell, I went through all of act 1 and 2 with the whole "save these special items for later incase I need them." Which of course leads to the inevitable end of the game and your backpack is full because you forgot to use the items. I had scrolls of every kind, hundreds of different arrows, every potion under the sun. All hardly used because I was "waiting till I needed them" up until the later half of act 3. Started a new character and noticed an alchemy tab. Not only did I not craft a single potion my first playthrough, I didn't even realize is was as simple as crafting from your inventory and not some crafting bench. Imagine how stupid I felt lol.
