Is there nothing that Sierra can't play on a mandolin? Her talent is jaw dropping!! And she makes it look so effortless! Her voice is beautiful, her personality seems so great, and she is so pretty!! She is a total blessing! Magical!!

Love that part with 2 melodies and the drone talking to each other, but it's all 16th notes lined up in a row. A musical tesselation with all the pieces fit together snugly - no gaps!
I like hearing her talk almost as much as I like hearing her play!

@@kaialoha Mandolin is usually played pick style, but i get your point. This piece is played on the classical guitar with the fingers, and you have to have great technique to play it well.

his level of understanding of musical composition is still higher than the entire musical knowledge of the top 100 pop stars combined and its 2020, and i mean, i subscribe to the church of van halen where our lord eddie once proclaimed "if it sounds good, it is good" but, i'm sure if Bach was still alive/bought back to life, that'd be something to brag about lol.

Bach's first paying gig was as a violinist. All of his sons played the violin except the one who was left handed, Johann Christoph I think. He probably taught the violin along the same lines as he taught the Harpsichord: Six months of four note patterns, hands static, in all positions and all keys, quite like Liszt's technical exercises for Piano. I've tried to replicate this Method in my series called "Gripology" for Jazz Violin. What I have found starting as a Bluegrass fiddle player, who got into Bebop with out classical training, is that Classical Training is more geared towards playing Paganini rather than Bach. And this is born out in comments by Henrik Szeryng and Nathan Milstein that "You have to adopt Unconventional Fingering to play Bach!" For me, the big thing was not that it was "unconventional" rather that it was Chromatic based rather than Diatonic. The pedagogy, or approach, to playing the Unaccompanied Bach is really only shared with a Lucky Few, so it can seem Monstrously Difficult! But on the other hand, since I played guitar(flat picking,) I was able to use that knowledge to learn the Prelude in E and the Presto in G minor on the Violin. I just totally ignored the fingering and the bowing and tried to learn it like I would learn Donna Lee for instance, on the Guitar.

@@Iazzaboyce Not even a vague problem. I played mandola in a classical orchestra. Never played violin in my life. Picked up a viola and could playe exactly the same stuff pizzicato on it. Also upset a salesman in a guitar shop by playing an instrument I'd never seen before. He told me, if you play guitar, you'll not be able to play this. A Goldtone Octave mandolin which was bizarrely in tune GDAE. Gave him a quick classical run down and almost bought if. But he was a bit rude so decided not to.

That is the "technically correct" way to hold the pick. Clearly works for her.

Try it yourself, you'll find your pick is more locked-in and responsive. I like to play with just my pinky out so I can use it as a pivot point.
We got to see her in concert last year. Very, very talented. We were somewhat amused that she played little or no bluegrass music. I would have liked that much more.
I think there are so many female musicians that focus more on female than musician. You are a bloody talented musician and your constant hard work shows. Truly Amazing

You’re such a boss on the Mando… keep shredding ! Once I picked up the Mandolin I was hooked and instantly upgraded my instrument. Went from metal style to fast picking on Mandolin and it worked out GREAT and was able to find our band with all sorts of roots to start a band that’s more “newgrass” and different style than any band and it’s done us wonders for our following.
You blow my mind, always thinking out the box. You are ART!

This is totally not related, but once i was playing in the beach in BC with a bunch of my hippie friends, when this guy comes with a mandolin like yours and just rocks out the most wackiest train hopping songs and totally made our night way cooler in the midst of a beautiful sunset. I play this piece on classical guitar. It's amazing and fantastic how much of Bach's music (pretty much all bar the choral and sacred stuff) lends itself to fingerboard instruments though composed on a keyboard. Very well played. I play the mandolin and violin but not as well on the mandolin as you. That was great. Keep it coming. Love the Baroque era !!
What do you mean “composed on a keyboard”? Bach composed directly to paper, and this was originally a violin piece.
