    Hey Mark, no need to do a review on it or anything, but I think you're missing the best versions of Batman in these. The animated series, Justice League animated series and Batman: Beyond are what most people would argue to be the definitive representation of the character and his story. Great work as usual on the movies though, love your channel.

      I'd definitely agree. Growing up those series made me fall in love with dc. The newer animated justice leagues as well as batman movies are really good as well being part of the dc animated universe. I think the real missing review would the arkham games which "makes you feel like the batman" where you to get do the detective stuff, kick ass, take down the big names drive around in the BATMOBILE. The best part about batmans character is being a nightmare for the average goon and that's what you get from it being in the form of a video game

    I think the problem people have with the Snyder iterations of Batman and Superman isn’t necessarily that they’re currently violent people, but more so that we barely got to see these versions of the characters before they fell to their low points in BvS.

    • @caffreydavis218
      @caffreydavis218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      We got the high point of Superman in Man Of Steel, but I wished we got another movie (Man of Steel 2) prior to BvS that showed more of his good side, that could also somehow introduce Diana.. Also wished we got a movie prior to BvS for Batman and how he went down to his bad point at the end of that movie.. then, BvS.
      So, Man Of Steel - Man of Steel 2 - Batman - BvS.

    • @koslaulskusthegreat9050

      This is exactly how I feel, I don't feel much of a connection to this iteration of batman or superman yet. So seeing them as violent dark people at their lowest point isn't as engaging when I haven't seen them at their highest point.

    • @Youllneverfindmezx

      Do we really need another early stage of Batmans career set films? This narrative to me is such a lazy argument because compared to the MCU whom never had many iterations of their main characters, Batman has been around for almost a century. You could honestly make an assumption that any of the previous Batmans were set before BVS but regardless they are not so showing the story again would just be milking the same story been told over and over again. Superman had MoS which perfectly ties in with this film with the character arc.

    • @adriandeutschmann5003
      @adriandeutschmann5003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@Youllneverfindmezx don't think we need a film about his origin/ early career as batman, but a film that just establishes him and his place in the world of the DCEU ... Like give us a batman that is experienced and has a Robin that he is training. (You could essentially do a death in the family). Show us how the batman we generally know (the one who doesn't kill) becomes the one we see in batman v superman, so that we as an audience can go on this character journey with him.

    You're probably very sick of Batman by now, but if you find yourself revisiting this character and franchise, I highly recommend Justice League and Batman The Animated Series. It is THE ultimate depiction of the story of Batman, and most importantly, his heart. He's a deeply compassionate and staunchly emotional man who would do anything for his friends, his family, and his city. The best parts are the story of Two Face and his interactions with the Justice League

      We would have gotten a recreation of that scene with Affleck’s Batman. Basically Zack Snyder said In the apocalyptic knightmare timeline where Superman turns evil, Batman and Joker team up(as seen at the end of ZSJL) and they would have been discussing a plan by campfire. During this joker would have brought up this incident and we would have flashed back to a recreation of robin’s death. There would have been a lot of reflection from Bruce about that and I think it would have been cool to see.

      Probably not the best idea to read for Mark since it's very intertwined with 35 years of Superman and by extension 35 years worth of other various DC stories, but the Dan Jurgens run of Action Comics along with Tomasi and Gleason's Superman (both from 2016), are both really good reads. It's what made me change my mind on Superman, as everything I had seen him in had represented him as emotionless and boring or really evil, and it was nice to see not only him as a more interesting character but also his family, friends, and enemies.

    The worst part about theatrical Justice League is how everyone blames Joss Whedon. The dude already had some serious burnout from corporate interference on Avengers 2, then Justice League comes along and DC is all like “Hey, here’s this half made barely developed film who’s original creator’s style is completely different from yours. finish it by Monday”. Full disclosure: I haven’t watched the full video yet (I will because I love all of your vids), but I first wanted to comment on the interpretation of BvS.
    I completely agree with your take on the Batflek films as movies, but I’d have to respectfully disagree on the being minimally irritated with Batman being grizzled-enough to kill angle. I’m sure that would make sense if it was built-up over several movies, but he’s a hero with such a strong moral compass that it can’t really be justified to drop us in to a world after all these traumatic events and with no characterization of this version of Bruce. If anything, I’d be inclined to say that it’s lazy to write Batman without his moral compass but with everything else the same, just as it’s lazy to compare Superman to Jesus.
    Edit: While I don’t like the idea of only comparing Superman to God, I really enjoy your perspective on him as a character that always makes the unforeseen option available, because that is what he is in the comics. He’s at his most compelling when he’s just talking 1:1 with someone who is struggling with mental health, or when he talks one of his villains out of a plan.
    Edit edit: You were right about Lex. Movie lex is nothing like the comics, while smallville (though not perfect) is much closer.

The ship as well as the key is the codex which contains all the information from the Kryptonian archives. The robot then explains to him the information that Lex is seeking. It makes perfect sense that Lex would want information on anything he can use to either murder or frame Superman so he retains his insane belief that God cannot be all good and all-powerful. He doesn't do any of it off instinct, it fits the character considering this iteration is a young power-hungry, and incredibly intelligent tech billionaire imitating the billionaires of today (i.e. Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos, etc).

      Also, he had access to the ship and was conducting research on it with Lex Corp, he even had Zod's body delivered to him for his investigations on kryptonite. So, he didn't do it out of intuition, he had been investigating the ship.

    Correction. The branding wasn't the death sentence for criminals, because that happened only once The guy we see in the beginning getting branded is the guy who got stabbed. In the news paper when the guy was arrested, Alfred confronts Bruce about it, which means that it is a recent thing. And he only got branded and only him got killed.
    When Clark got the picture of the guy who was branded and killed, he got only his pictures, because there was no one else.
    So, so. Batman wasn't branding them so they could die in prison. That was Luthor's work.

    As someone who is a big Batman comics fan, I would like to push back on the claim that the modern incarnation of Batman still kills, because he doesn't. Ever since DC's first initial reboot establishing one main-line continuity in 1985, Batman's no-kill rule has been a foundational corner stone to the character's identity (for a great example of this in the comics I recommend Batman issue 430, Fatal Wish, which takes place right after the iconic story A Death in the Family). I also would like to point out that the whole "Bruce Wayne is the mask" take isn't as universally accepted in the comics community as it may seem from out of it, with the story Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive directly and explicitly contradicting that reading of the character.
    I also was someone who didn't used to get the appeal of Superman. The comic that changed that for me was American Alien, which basically shows how Clark's humanity is what defines the character. John Byrne's Man of Steel and the comic All Star Superman are also some of the best and most definitive Superman comics of all time, in case you're interested.

      Yeah the only times Batman kills is comics going back to the 80s, it usually from one offs. The main continuity of Batman very rarely kills but Snyder made his Batman kill frequently and justified it by citing Michael Keaton's Batman which is notoriously not comic accurate 😅

    Appreciate the reviews Mark! It's amazing to see you and other reviewers like Jeremy Jahns give BVS a second chance. I'm a massive Zack Snyder fan, but I can see that BVS did need a little better execution to get the general audience on board with it. I love those interpretations of Batman and Superman, and I think they get their moments to shine more in Zack Snyder's Justice League. I think it's important not to get hung up on certain versions of these characters, because the contrast of a veteran Batman and a green Superman who's unsure of who he is and what he stands for, is refreshing considering all the other versions we've seen on film. Thanks again Mark!

    If you want the most definitive Superman story in my opinion, I highly recommendd The Death and Return of Superman (Comprised of The Death of Superman, Wake and Reign of the Supermen). It explores not only Superman as a character, his beliefs, his ideals and who he is as a person, but also how he affects the world and the people around him. We see how his presence affects people, not just the hatred of his enemies but the love of his friends and even random strangers. We see how his dath affects his girlfriend, his friends, his peers, his enemies, everyone. Hell, we explore both Superman as a symbol and icon as well as Clark Kent whose absence is also felt when Superman dies. We see how peopel are inspired by him, attempting to emulate him out of a sense of remembrance, or creating a replacement to fill the void, or taking on his name as a villainious ploy.
    Ths is the best Superman story ever told and EVERYONE needs to see it.

    My biggest problem with bvs ( besides the whole characters being okay with murder) is that there is pretty much no characterization difference between Batman and Superman. That's literally the point of BvS 🤦🏼. Both of them are their worse points, bruce is pissed at superman & zod, he sees him as a threat, an alien, he gets premonitions where he's evil, lex further ruins image of superman by making him look evil ( Africa & congress hall ), because of it, batman has lost his way, broke his rule after 20+ years because supes is the biggest threat he's faced. Alfred even warns him and is scared for him
      " How many good guys are left, how many stay that way "
      Superman is pissed at batman because he's branding people ( lex is killing the branded thugs to make him look bad ). Clark wants to investigate but fails so he goes as superman and gives him a warning.
      Now lex doesn't like superman, he's a god like being. Where was he when he needed saving from his daddy's fists?
      He thinks he's too Powerful to be this good so he must die. He pitches batman & superman against each other but fails in the end ( doomsday was plan b ).
      You can see why both characters were sad and broody in this, the plot requires it. Superman still saves a lot of people in the first half, just like bruce. He's trying his best, but the world is turned against him thanks to lex and the damage his fight with zod caused.
      Tldr : why are both depressed and broody? Because of circumstances in the story. Simple as that.

    Fun fact for you, Mark: In the original cut of Justice League, we learn virtually nothing about Cyborg's backstory at all. I think there are about 2 lines of dialogue with a combined length of 10 seconds that explain that his father turned him into a cyborg and that he doesn't like it - and that's it ! No, really, this is not a joke. Cyborg is just a cyborg because . . . motherboxes exist ? We learn nothing about the accident or how and why his father was able and willing to turn him into a cyborg (other than it saved his life, that's it).
    We learn nothing about his plans, motivations or feelings before or after becoming a cyborg other than "angry at dad for being a cyborg", even his dad's sacrifice comes completely out of nowhere and makes zero sense because they never explain what he was trying to do and we have no idea what that room/device was even supposed to do to the motherbox. The scene where Cyborg connects with the motherboxes is also cut entirely, making cyborg a completely sidelined character in the climax of the movie. All in all, the original cut would have been much better if Cyborg had been cut as a character entirely, imho.
    Edit: We also learn nothing about his capabilities to control banks or nuclear arsenals or the like, that entire scene where his father explains all of that to him and he tries it out to help that family at the ATM machine was also cut entirely.

    I think the usage of the clip of "Knowledge but no power" shows exactly the division between Snyder's Lex in BvS in contrast to the more recognized vision in DCAU, SmallVille and even movies like All Star Superman. He can deliver the lines and perform in a way that shows the egotistical but also intimidating parts of Lex, but him about to crack and laugh are not features that define Lex's personality.
    That's why the brief scene in Snyder Cut's Justice League was so praised, it showed an evolution of the character that gave a much familiar tone, and personally speaking, added much more weight to the character, as we now saw Lex getting a development to become the guy we're used to.

    • @ParagonSlayer0
      @ParagonSlayer0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That’s a lot of people’s problem with these movies. They don’t want to wait for the character development to happen. Both Superman and Lex don’t start as the classic interpretations but as the movies go on they get closer to that. Lex here still has all the underlying characteristics as all previous versions of Lex.

    • @aquelgamermexicano

      @@ParagonSlayer0 The only one that felt poorly made was Batman, mostly because the setting of his character is "What if we made a Batman that went through everything that led to Dark Knight Returns, WITHOUT him ever meeting Superman or any of the Justice League before?"
      Which i think is interesting, mostly since that's enough to make him a Batman that kills and shoots, but that's something that could have been handled better with either a solo Batman movie before BvS, or just a good amount of exposition on how this particular Batman fell on that path, which would have been much better than "suddenly Doomsday" if you ask me.

He has new rules with branding, robin’s dead, he expresses how everything he has done has been meaningless... it goes on. He fed up and tired. I don’t think you need a whole movie to get that across when BvS already shows exactly where the character is.
      That would be a good movie though, very dark. I just don’t think you always have to have the marvel formula for every series.

    • @aquelgamermexicano
      @aquelgamermexicano 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ParagonSlayer0 Completely agree with you on the formula aspect, i'm mostly saying that similarly with how Lex's personality in BvS catches people off guard in contrast to other incarnations, so did Batman to a stronger level since narratively speaking, this is a Batman that went through everything that every other incarnation went through, WITHOUT ever meeting the Justice League, which changes the personality in a lot of areas.
      That said, i don't think having at least a Batman movie before BvS would have been a Marvel formula, it's just something to give more room to breathe and exploration to this incarnation of Batman. In other words, i would have liked more of this Batman.

Had we all got to see BvS Ultimate in theaters followed by Zack's 214 minute version of JL, though still divisive, the general reception would have been better. If you criticize Joker for leaning too much on homage, while simultaneously defending Tarantino, it just tells me you haven't seen most of the movies Tarantino has, at times, outright plagiarized. You can make the argument that Joker didn't bring anything new to the table, to which I'd respond that it shows declining public resources for mental health in a way that Scorsese never really did, or tried to. In the 1980s, we began cutting off federal funding for mental health, and many state run mental health institutions were shut down, all across the country. Travis Bickle is a figure of self imposed, obsessive loneliness. Everyone and everything in Arthur Fleck's life fails him. It's not the same story. And the same can be said of King of Comedy. Joker borrows, yes, but it doesn't steal. It is its own movie. Particularly once you realize how open to interpretation everything is. Is Arthur even the subway shooter? First time you watch it, it seems obvious that he is. Third time, you really start to wonder. I LOVE Taxi Driver. I've watched it obsessively for decades, and it does still offer me new things when I watch it...but it doesn't make me question whether it's all in Travis's head. If you think 'Django meets blaxploitation' is transcendent, I just don't really see how 'Scorsesean character study meets supervillain origin story' is any different.

      To many people it's like dragon ball evolution when they were wanting a more faithful adaption. Even man of steel is very polarizing. Snyder is very good at making cool visuals and images, but he's very bad at stringing together a narrative that connects all these music videos he wants to make. He hit a grand slam with watchmen and 300, and just thought he can do that for every film he makes afterwards. So when he was given the most beloved characters in comics, he's essentially desecrated many people's adult childhoods.

    An argument could be made that Batman in the Snyder-verse doesn't start actually killing until BvS after the nightmare dream where he's told he's right. Up until the Batmobile chase, we don't explicitly see Bruce drop bodies. After the event in Metropolis and Robin's death, all we know is Batman started branding people and becoming a lot more violent and dark. He doesn't work with the police anymore, the Bat signal goes unused for a long time. Hell, I don't think anyone even says he's a killer unless they talk about the brand. It isn't until Bruce has that premonition and the Flash tells him he was right about Superman that he starts to kill. That desperation and powerlessness finally takes a hold of him, especially when he's seen a future where Superman destroys the world: his worst nightmare brought to light. So he's desperate for the kryptonite, and is willing to do anything to get it, moral code be damned. Because right now, in Bruce's eyes, it's either a few people or all of humanity.
    I see what they were trying to do with this Batman, but the issue I have is Snyder. Dude can make good looking movies, yes. But seeing some of his interviews and getting insight into how he thinks about the world and the concept of heroes, his personal reasoning for making a Batman who kills is what irks me and makes me not want to love this version of Batman. Like, he wanted dark and edgy for the sake of dark and edgy for Batman. I enjoyed BvS and Snyder's League, but I cannot get myself to enjoy them fully.

    It kind of baffles me how everyone seems to gloss over the fact that Eisenburg's Lex ISN'T Lex. He is Lex JR. He says in the movie that his dad was the Lex in front of the Corp. Lex Jr is just an abused child who prayed to God that his father would stop abusing him, but his prayers were never answered. So now that he has money and power, yes, he is a socially awkward psychopath hellbent on destroying the God that was never there for him. It's clear in the movie but people always say "But he isn't Lex..." Yeah, because he isn't. Representing Lex Luthor Jr, he's pretty accurate.

Also, the whole God thing i just dumb: Superman is not perfect or reamotely a god, he failed Metropolis and people die. This could work if in the previous movies there wer no casualties or dstruction (like a real Superman would do) and Luthor just have this vendetta. People already hate Superman, what's Luthor's goal? That everybody hates him? That's just dumb, there are no absolutes, there's always someone who thinks different.
