Braddah John!!! His son, Jathan, played football for me in Hawai’i. While we were practicing on Saturday’s, John would do warm up runs around the track…minimum 6 mile warm up runs 😂Needless to say, everyone was impressed. Myself included! Blessed to have known John and his family. Hope to enjoy some Jack and Crown-professionally with you Braddah John!

Very interesting content. I’m a retired Marine GySgt (Retired in 2008) now working as the Executive Director for a Navy Weapons Station (Seal Beach). Interesting conversation on retention in the Marine Corps and the continuing struggles with FTAP! I recently snagged a young Marine Aviation Ordnanceman from MALS-39 and in my discussions with him, the stresses of family sustainment, finance, and stability ultimately drove him to EAS from the Marine Corps. His plan solidified when he got an inroad into the Federal Service. If ever interested, I’d be more than happy to discuss the Federal Hire process, its weaknesses, challenges, and ways to success. Great content by the both of you. Semper Fi.

I think you were enlisting when I was getting out. I did four years and EAS in February 1989..This particular discussion was very interesting. You mentioned a Marine who had several different challenges which lead him to leave the Marines. During my time in, no Corporal or Sergeant or above wanted to see themselves as lacking people skills. But many did. John, the retired Sgt. Major, attended a Navy leadership course in Rhode Island. I believe it served him well. I worked for the criminal justice system for over 20 years. After 10 years in the job, I returned to a community college and took about 10 courses in psychology. I learned more about counseling and interviewing and other issues. My undergraduate degree is in political science/international relations. I took those classes because I needed to get off any comfort zones and be a better listener and communicator. I have heard some say college is a sham. I completely disagree. Not knowing is a major sham. It is also a major handicap.

We do not have a retention issue with FTAP Marines. I do not understand where we get this from but statistics show otherwise

I'm Puerto Rican and I mess up a lot of staying just like you. Keep doing what you do with your Podcast.😊

Without a doubt, this particular discussion has been very informative in highlighting some of the central issues within the Marine Corps and the military in general.
First, leadership is not an A to Z simple answers. Because no leader has all the answers. Second, many Staff NCOs and officer grade levels don't always "communicate well with one another." Officers should respect the experience of the lower ranking Marines or Soldiers because, those individuals have more earned experience than many officers. Third, this was an issue 30 years ago when I served in the Marines as an Infantryman; but, I am sure it applies to all MOSs. John Bejerano brought his experience and education to the table..He completed a Navy leadership course and it appears to have served him well..
The stubbornness of leadership who is quick to blame others is and should be unacceptable behavior.. Instead of bridging cohesiveness, it brings on doubt and divisiveness among the ranks..
Lastly, many need to hit the pause ⏯️ button and get their egos in check. Leadership has a beginning but no end.. Anyone can get a PhD in leadership and doesn't have all the answers; because leadership will change with each situation.

My only son, 18 yr old Zachary Gandy, left today for MEPS tomorrow. I'm really excited for him, but of course, being a mama, I'm anxious/ concerned. He attended Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg MS to get his GED and adult diploma. Attended community College for HVAC certification and has been working for a commercial HVAC company in Gulfport, MS. I feel like he’s got it made with everything he has accomplished. Good job, good pay, excellent benefits, why would he want to join the MARINES! But one the less, I KNOW he will be successful because he has a passion for becoming a Marine. God bless y’all. So happy I came across your podcast.

I am a former marine and my son is a former Marine. He’s my only child. Also, your son has made a great choice support him as I’m sure you’ll do. There will be highs. There will be Lowe’s, but the mission and his conviction will make him proud of himself and you proud of him stay strong

In my opinion, the military is a good place to experience maturity, personal growth, responsibility, and to know more about oneself. I probably would have never traveled to Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, if I had not enlisted in the Marines. All branches have their programs. It looks like your son has a good technical/repair background. If I could I would have probably made the military a career. When we are younger, we don't have neither the maturity or foresight to establish a career, the planning that is involved. I believe the military is a great institution with the right planning. Never wait for your anyone to plant the seeds, each person needs to start planting their own seeds of success.

My Detachment Gunny on Sea Duty in 77 on USS Coral Sea was Puerto Rican by the name of Hector Rodrigo Rosado. We never understood a word he said when on a run or especially when we pissed him off! Good old days.. Semper Fidelis

I attended the advanced course with a gunny that only rated the good conduct and national defense medals. His answer as to why he had no other awards was "Because I've never had a bad set of orders."

I can tell you from attending a graduation at Parris Island this past Friday, I can say the recruits they are graduating are not the caliber of Marines they should be. Truly disappointed in the Corps now. They caved to the mothers of America
