Audi Water Pump Replacement DIY (2008-2017 Audi MLB A4, S4, A5, S5, Q5)

  • ►Your Audi's water pump is one of those parts that seem as if it's engineered to fail. On the EA888 engine, the water pump from the factory is made of plastic. Heat, vibration, and plastic aren't known for playing nice together, over time degrading and becoming brittle. If left alone long enough, these water pumps spring leaks, dumping coolant on your driveway or in your garage. This is why Audi coolant leaks on cars with the EA888 engine are so common.
    In this DIY, Aaron Davis, FCP Euro's Audi Catalog Manager, shows us how to replace the plastic water pump on your MLB platform Audi, such as the A4, S4, A5, S5, or in the case of this video, the Q5, with an all-metal upgraded version. After you replace your plastic water pump with this all-metal version, it shouldn't need replacement again for the life of the vehicle.

    Great video on doing this water pump! I'm a technician myself, worked for a Volvo/Volkswagen dealership for a long time, mainly on the Volvo side. I left for Ford, in 2013, and now have my own indy shop, and I work on just about anything you can think of. Thats so much easier nowadays, with the Internet, and especially TH-cam. I rely on it to get a head start and find instructions on a lot of things on different vehicles. Its not the only resource I use and rely on, but quality instructional videos such as this one, help a lot. Thanks for posting this one!

    This video was a HUGE help. My original water pump failed a couple of years back on my ‘13 A4 and I paid a mechanic $350 and bought my own replacement aluminum pump from Amazon. The thermostat failed after less than 2 years, and I needed to replace it again. All of my parts came from FCPeuro and the quality was great. All of the instructions worked perfectly, except I was able to slip my belt back on without cranking the engine. Outstanding instructions!

    Great guide thanks much. It went easier than expected and took me less than an hour. I found it way easier to install the belt first and then guide the pump in.

    Dealer wanted over $1800 to do this job, so I ordered the parts,(pump kit + pipe+union), from you, and followed this video for a very successful install. I took my time and turned it into an all-day job. I’m not a pro, but could do this again in maybe 3 hours. I had to get o-ring WHT006407 20x3mm) from the VW dealer, but everything else went perfectly for my 2014 Q5 w/101k miles.

    Very helpful video, totally saved me a ton of extra time and work. One thing though, there’s no need to turn the crank to put the belt back on. Just slide the belt on with the water pump about 1/4 inch to the right of the dowel pins, then use some arm and hand muscles to put the pump on the dowels and while holding the pump on with one hand put the bolt farthest away from the belt in……. You know the rest!!!

    This is an excellent video and very easy to follow. I replaced the coolant pump in my 2012 Audi Q5 2.0 over the past weekend and it only took a couple of hours with a couple of hiccups. There are a couple of steps I felt could be added to the video to make it even better. First of all, most of these kits provide a new belt for the pump which is not easy to install. I thought I could just slide the old one out and slide the new one in, but easier said than done. The gear that spins with the crank has a flange on it (probably to keep the belt from sliding off) and it prevents the belt from sliding out between the block and the flange. I could not get the belt pulley bolt off as it requires a special tool, so I just cut the old belt off and tried to slide the new one underneath. This was frustrating but after awhile with some lithium grease I finally got it to go; there must be an easier way though. The second thing is that there is a one time use gasket that goes between the throttle bottle and the intake manifold housing that needs to be replaced. I wish the young fella would have mentioned this. The Audi dealer nailed me $37.00 for a $4.50 gasket I could have bought online if I would have known, but I needed to get the car back on the road so I was stuck. Also, my intake manifold is made of plastic and the torque specs for plastic were not supplied (I don't usually torque plastic so I just hand tightened). All in all, this was an excellent video, thanks Aaron Davis!

      My throttle body had a green rubber gasket, I would not consider it a one-time use gasket, seemed in fine condition. Just cleaned up the surfaces and re-used

      There are many videos on the web showing clear steps on how to manipulate the belt onto the WP pulley before placing it in its final position.

  • @california_screaming

    Great video, way above the rest. Very detailed , thorough and good camera work. Even the torque specs are outlined. I watched this several times to learn all the steps and it went pretty smooth except for two huge things I wish I knew going in: #1 The torque specs are for 9nm (water pump), 7 nm for throttle body - but I found out during installation that my torque wrench only goes down to about 27nm and had to stop mid job and order a new tool. Good thing is they sell mini 1/4 drive torque wrenches for bicycle mechanics that range from 2nm to 20nm and it worked great. #2 You should make sure you are able to rotate the crank for the belt install (at 13:37) before everything. I had a long ratchet but wasn't quite long enough and had to use a breaker bar, which required many incremental turns before having to detach the socket and find the nut again, very frustrating. Also on my car (Audi A5) there is a small electrical box attached to the radiator housing which is right in front of the crank bolt which blocked access for attaching a socket. After close examination it was held on with a small T30 screw and it dangled out of the way after detaching.

    • @TheEtoileNoire
      @TheEtoileNoire 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happened to me! I had no long rachear just a beaker bar and finding the nut to rotate the crank was very difficult and was a very tight space in front of the radiador had to do it several times to seat the belt onto the pump gahhhhh

    • @robertlodge6012
      @robertlodge6012 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For the crank I used an old, cheap ratcheting 1/2” torque wrench and a 15/16th socket (I didn’t have a 24mm), and it worked great.

  • @jssarriaga
    @jssarriaga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is a great DIY video. But Iwould do it differently starting by unplugging the lower radiator hose instead of opening the drain bib. It's faster and allows more of the coolant to evacuate. Also, on 7:51, the heater hose, there is no need to tap the hose connector with a large screwdriver. Its better to remove the screws holding the plastic pipe then holding it at a comfortable angle just wiggle it out of the heater hose.

    Great video. Unfortunately your shipping department isn't on the same level as your video department. I ordered this water pump kit with expedited shipping. It took 4 working days to ship. Really? That's expedited? 11 days later still no water pump. When I contacted you to ask what the shipping delay was, I was assured it would arrive by the promised date 8/8-8/11. Well, guess what? It's still not here. I should have bought it cheaper somewhere else but wanted to support you guys for putting out these DIY videos. Hopefully you can figure out the shipping thing. I'm extremely disappointed in your service.

    This video was very helpful video. I've never replaced a water pump on any car and this video from FCP (along with their all aluminum upgraded water pump) made the problem very approachable. I highly recommend getting the hose clamp pliers if you don't have them; otherwise, I found the hose clamp on the plastic coolant pipe a complete pain (and ultimately went and bought hose clamp pliers at Autozone but you can probably get them cheaper if you plan ahead). The only other hiccup was my 2013 A4 had an M10 triple square (spline) screw on the bottom of the metal bracket that needs removed ... yet anther frustrating piece of over-engineering from Volkswagen. (I mean seriously Volkswagen engineers - really? Let's over-engineer a screw but put a plastic water pump on our German luxury performance brand.). Thank you to FCP - even with the tool purchases still saved over $1000 from the dealership quote of $1300-$1400.

The kit seems to comes with stock length bolts, one of which stripped out on me. The bottom bolt hole on my belt cover didn't line up, but it worked out for me to use that as one of the bolts for the thermostat housing, so all ended well.

    Helpful DIY! Thanks! I’ve recently swapped the Water pump on my 12 A4. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND keeping your old temp sensor and thermostat or getting a new OEM ones in FCPeuro, the ones that are in the kit, that was mentioned, are not OEM and will inevitably fail. My temp sensor failed on mine after 1K miles, it wasn’t hard to replace the temp sensor and the thermostat, but it’s an inconvenience. I also replaced my thermostat with brand new one just in case.

    why could you not have put the belt on the Wat

    Thanks. Very well done and informative. But will not be tackling this. Merely watching it induced anxiety. Too many small old brittle parts to break, too many small parts to drop. Poor vision, poor access. Specialized tools.
    Pay Audi the biannual owner-victims $1500 tithe.
    German cars are complicated, tight and expensive. They are poorly designed for repairs. The limited life plastics have a short life cycle in the heat.
    Have a good repair budget, a good tow package and a good garage lined up ahead of time.
    Or buy a modest mid- or late-cycle new Toyota, maintain it well and forget about repairs for 15 years.

      Hi Thot Lord, it can certainly be a failing water pump that is leaking. Further inspection will be needed to determine that, perhaps a small mirror or borescope may help you.

    naptowntuner does this job in 20 minutes also, this seems more detailed and a lot more parts removed but skips about more... where this i think would take an hour to do, where Naptowntuner does it in a 20 minute continuous video, very fast entire job, but take this guy serious, he has Audi / VW tattoo on his wrist and is doing it more by the book that Audi wants you to do it by. Thank you for such detail on this job, i have confidence of doing it now. This guy goes over detail of build quality of pump and gaskets a bit more also to explain to you.

    I just installed the new Graf WP kit. Is it normal for the lower big hose to be super hard to fit in? Anyway I did install it finally and did make sure the metal clip click on the way in and that it is sitting properly in its place, but noticed some leak for the same exact pipe where it fit on the WP after the car warmed up. Any ideas?

      @Miketheknight68 Where did you find the o-ring? There is almost no room for an o-ring on mine. If i have the o-ring in place i can't compress it and get the pipe to clip in. The ring would have to be extremely flat for it to work.

I like the detail in it, that 2.0 TFSi H2O pump is in a difficult position but it not that bad of a job, I just did mine on my ‘13 B8 A4 took my about 3hrs based on watching this video. I really liked the torque specs too. I’m a huge fan of FCP and I’ll continue to buy from you guys.. great website and customer service and does that water pump have the policy of Lifetime warranty?

    Great video! I've been watching it a few times and taking notes so I don't miss anything when I start the repair. I just got my kit the other day and had a quick question about the pump itself...
    @fcpeuro In the box for the Graf pump, there is a set of O-rings that it does not look like you use at all (this does not include the single O-ring thag came packaged separately that you provided in the kit and obviously use in the video on the crossover pipe). Is this set of O-rings included with the pump just extra?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark, glad to hear that! Sometimes manufacturers will include extra units that are not always necessary, or are already part of the kit we put together in-house. Thank you for the note however, we will go ahead and reflect that on our end!
