    Any movement in the shoulder, can manipulate the cue off the "shot line", because the shoulder joint is a multi function joint. You do have the slightest Shoulder Movement, as you pull the cue back to the Pause. I do enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.

    I’ve only just discovered your channel and videos. Thanks for the great tips! Can I ask a quick question regarding step 4? Is the power of the each shot determined by how far you pull the cue back when feathering the cue? Does speed of delivery come into play or do you always deliver the cue at the same speed and just pull the cue back less for a gentle shot and further back for a heavier shot? Hope that makes sense. I think this might be where I’m going wrong as I don’t always hit my chest when cuing. I’m a div 2, club league player and trying to make more consistent 20-30 breaks (my max is only 37) but I’m so inconsistent, I can’t even get to 16 a lot of the time as I miss ones I should be getting right after potting a few really good ones with fairly good position! I always address the table the same way and my stance is always the same with a straight back leg in line with the shot so I think I’m ok there. I don’t always hold my cue in the same place so that’s my main inconsistency. Can that make a big difference to cuing straight? Can you please explain how far back to hold the cue with the right hand? Thanks, Chris.

    Hi, I want to thank you for explaining the pauses so clearly which helped me understand a mistake I was doing for years. I have been trying to imitate cue action of Lee(My Fav), and Murphy for years with pause at back which ruin my cue action and makes me couldn’t cue straight. I tried your cue action today and can follow through better and understand what I was doing wrong. I was forcing myself in doing what was not suitable for me. Thx and will practise more

    Hi Steve - some grest points in there ! If you watch Anthony McGill's vid on cue action he talks about having three pauses in the action - i used to have no pause at the end of the backswing and i introduced one and ita been a gamechanger for me - i guess its about what feels right for individual - i used to have no pause at the end of the feathers and introduced one! Its been a real change! Keep up the great work mate!

  • @robay3398
    @robay3398 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the quality video.
    I wonder if I should stick the cue to my rib cage while feathering. I'm currently doing it, the pivot point guides the cue and makes me feather straighter.
    However, when I'm actually playing the shot, my wrist will pump into my rib cage when I'm trying to cue through the cue ball, throwing my follow-through slightly off-line, especially when I'm playing power shots.
    Should I keep doing it?

    • @MrShamed69
      @MrShamed69 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. I find I do the same thing on the follow though. I e my grip hits my rib cage and moves the cue off line slightly. Presumably, this can impart side on the ball especially with more power in the shot.
      I've watched lots of coaches videos and no one has mentioned this issue. Like you, I like my cue close to my side for control. I've tried experimenting with my stance in such a way as to move my body further a way from the cue line but lose control on the cue action.

    Hello..Mr.Barton..on softs shot i fully agree with nr 5 (elbow still) but what about power shots!? How do i generate enough power!?

  • @pritamtamang6203
    @pritamtamang6203 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Barton, Great tips and thanks for the video. I had a question about your last tip. What are all the muscles I should lock when hitting from the elbow? Do I only keep my shoulder (deltoid) muscles from moving or do I also ensure that the inside of my arm (biceps/
    triceps) is sticking with my lat muscles when I pay the follow through? Any other muscle/joint I should lock when I play the follow through? Thanks!

    • @MrXeberdee
      @MrXeberdee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey - it might be 3 years since, but I had the same question. After I experimented, I found that lifting my shoulder slightly and keeping deltoid tensed, also tightens my biceps a little. If I also tuck the elbow in a bit (which works for my action, but maybe not yours) then the whole system is much more stable and solid, and on a full backstroke if the elbow keeps still and muscles tensed but not too tight, then you are kind of forced to relax the fingers more to keep the cue moving parallel without raising the cue butt on the full backstroke. I think before I was moving my elbow position slightly to help keep the cue level, and lifting the shoulder fixed it and makes the action straighter and more consistently reliable too - which results in more balls going into pockets :)

  • @snookerpabahia9380
    @snookerpabahia9380 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you very much for your videos, Barton, to make the balance until I hand over my chest should I concentrate on the elbow? on the forearm? or in hand?

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All three! The hand needs to stay relaxed, then you feel the hit of the shot coming from the elbow. The grip and the elbow are the most important points to focus on.

  • @majm1297
    @majm1297 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love your videos and have watched most of them. Great information, analysis and camera angles which help demonstrating what you are trying to explain. I'm very detail oriented and I like that. However, you contradicted yourself in a couple of videos. For example, in this video you are saying to hit from the elbow while In a lot of videos, you show how you drop your elbow in your delivery. I myself drop the elbow as I found it works best for my cue action. I used to throw my upper arm and elbow when I am hit from the elbow.

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks a lot for watching the videos. I really appreciate your support 🙂
      I think whenever I talk about dropping the elbow, I'm very careful to talk about it happening AFTER the delivery.
      For a lot of players, they don't use a very long backswing, and then hit by purely using elbow drop, and that's not what good players are going.
      So hitting from the elbow.... AND THEN... dropping the elbow is acceptable and a technique used by a lot of players.
      What I'm trying to get across in a generic video, is that you don't want to hit using elbow drop. You hit from the elbow, and then drop it AFTER the strike (if that's you're natural tendency).

    • @majm1297
      @majm1297 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BartonSnooker I agree...I had that problem as well. Of all the different elements of technique and cue action, in my humble opinion and due to the difficulties I have experienced, I find that the grip and how it works with cue delivery is the most important. Most professionals like Steve Davis (whom I followed his advice religiously) and Sean Murphy, who are benchmarks as far as technique and cue action, don't stress much emphasis on how it works I believe it just came natural to them and that's why they assume everyone will get it naturally. Thank you again for your great in detail analysis of these elements of technique and cue action.

      Hi there. Have a look at my video on 'Lining Up Shots'. I explain here what I am looking at, and how you will see these angles better over time.

    Hi, very useful tips, but I have problem on my stance, why after 1 or 2 hours playing I feel smoth ache in my both legs?

    Thanks for the video, one question though i've always have this problem, i was told to lock my shoulder and play with the elbows and i've done that all my life but the problem is my stroke is making my cue move up and downwards instead of dead straight. for instance, when my arm is pointing straight down my cue is at the lowest position, and at the end of my backswing and after i play the shot at the end of the follow through my cue is lifted upwards. i feel it is natural if the shoulder is locked because the elbow is now moving at a sort of round circular motion. I try to look closely at how ronnie plays and he drops his shoulder considerably on his follow through and when i look more closely his shoulder isn't locked while feathering either, i believe thats what allows him to have a stroke thats dead straight, please advise. Thanks again and please keep this up. Subscribed!

      Hi there. I'm really glad the video has helped you.
      What you need to do is relax your shoulder muscles slightly on the backswing. If you watch this video closely: can you see the way I allow my elbow to move down slightly on the backswing? This allows me to keep the cue nice and flat to the bed of the table.
      When I say 'hit from the elbow', it is really that you MOSTLY want to hit from the elbow. You don't want to use the shoulder muscles like I show in this video.
      But, when you hit from the elbow, if your elbow then drops very slightly after you make contact with this white ball, that is absolutely fine.
      Hope that helps. Thanks again.

      @@BartonSnooker I'll definitely look into relaxing my shoulder and see if that helps, thanks so much for the quick reply, cheers!

    No 5 I’m hoping will help me greatly. I’ve tried (?) to play snooker for many years and never heard about that aspect of the action!? Thanks very much. I really enjoy your clear and informative tuition and have subscribed. Keep up the good work.

    Nice clear explanation for dummies like me 😊.
    The section after Range of Motion is named Heating from the elbow.
    Can this be edited out?
    It hurts my eyes 😭

    Hi Steve when your lining up at 4.28 you aim the tip at the center of the cue ball, is the tip also at the same time aimed at the contact point on the blue ball to pot it.

      Hi! I don't think of it as aiming the tip to a specific contact point. You need to aim the white onto a position on the object ball, where you think it will pot the ball. On my video 'Lining Up Shots', I explain what I am thinking about when I line up a shot.
      It is too difficult to pick an exact contact point on the object ball so that you pot it. All I am really judging is the overlap of the two balls so that I feel confident that the ball will go in.

    Hello there! Could you please explain to me why, in some cases for pro players it might be useful to put more distance between the tip and the cueball when addressing position? See e.g. John Higgins - he's been bridging somewhat (an inch or so?) further away from the cueball for a couple of seasons now. I'm certain he knows what he's doing; I'm just curious, why it could be beneficial to do that. More cue power? Better timing?

    I have significantly improved my potting since using this technique. But my positional play and ball control is poor. Any type of routine to improve this?

    Hi, beginning player here. When I go down for the shot, I can hit from the elbow alright but my arm isnt vertical, the elbow always drifts to the outside. Any tips on how to remedy this? Change the stance?
