Excellent lesson on cue control. Very simple and eloquent. This has been eluding me for the past few months, and now I have something to work on. This is a fantastic channel.
Having spend a lot of lock down, not being able to play back to my 40 break standard, i start getting anxious, rushing, going closer to the white, missing easy shots, ALL your video are superb, and really brought my game and confidence back as well as adding different dimensions as i feel more knowledgeable now.. so a huge help....
A very well delivered video, exactly what is needed by the beginner and improving players of any age so easy to follow and understand, thankyou for your time and exacting patience. Linerforce.
Thank you for bringing this topic up about the cue control, now it makes more sense to me about a recent problem i have in controlling my shots, I keep thinking I'm not hitting my cue ball accurately, but it could be the different strength of striking the cue ball. then tension kick in and i'm all over the place with different more problem. cheers mate quester singapore
Brilliant advice. Used this to make myself think every time I got down to the shot the other day. My play improved instantly, knowing I needed to polish up the basics. Cheers!
Another very good video Steve. I guarantee anyone who follows these simple steps will be cueing better almost instantly. The pause at the cue ball instead of pausing at the back swing will help those who tend to snatch. I also find that if a player is naturally fast it’s best they stick to only 3-4 feathers maximum to allow for constant concentration. It’s a strange thing but I’ve seen naturally fast players (10-15 seconds per shot) try to take longer (6-8 feathers) because they think it will help with concentration and they get a head wobble or blurred vision. Also something worth noting is take that little bit more time and think about the 3 shots ahead process that Steve has also done a video on. I honestly believe Steve will be one of the top coaches not just in the UK but globally. His easy to follow videos and easy manner in which he explains things are very easy to follow and will improve any player no matter what standard they are.
Really good video. Loved the fact you'd showed us how people go wrong as well as explaining the correct way to do it. I've subscribed to your channel. Look forward to viewing your other videos. Thanks for all your efforts 👍
Great tutorial again. I am trying to put all your tips and techniques together in practice. Finding the tension hard to let go at times and still struggling to get out of the starting gates. Still, these videos are very much appreciated!
Great video....rushing into the shot is something it did...given the attention like mentioned in the video really improved my game. Only problem i have is judging the lenght of the backswing. Having longer backswing allows me to deliver the cue more straight...but with too much power...so more practish needed for me....keep up the video's ...great job
Hi Steve, love the videos they have really helped my game come along. Is there any chance you could do a video on where to focus your eyes when cueing? I gather from other videos to focus on the object ball but could this be explained from walking in on the shot to the point you strike the cue ball! Thanks
@@basheerayub945 no! It's actually very soft. It's a 'Century Cue Tip - Grade 1'. Which is their softest one. It's just I am wearing a clip on microphone so it sounds a bit hard 🙂
I never had the opportunity to play snooker because here in the U.S. snooker tables are very difficult to find much less play on. But I have been and am a nine ball and eight ball enthusiast for many years. I can judge a good instructor fairly quickly and accurately especially when they are instructing in an area I know something about. In this case potting balls with shape. This guy is very competent, gifted, and talented at teaching snooker. Even though he is teaching about snooker, the techniques used to play snooker are basically the same as nine ball and eight ball and because of that I watch snooker instructors as well as instructors for almost any billiard game. And by the way, I also enjoy watching Ronnie O'Sullivan. He such a tremendous talent. When he is in stroke and playing well he is capable of firing in length of the table cut shots with astounding power and accuracy when his position calls for it.
I've just started playing snooker this video is alright for someone who knows where to strike the cue ball, I've tried to see where your hitting the cue ball so as to give me some idea where to hit it, without this knowledge i'm finding it hard to get the affect your getting, maybe in another video you could show the positions on the cue ball, still great videos to watch.
I think I have not been having my backswing at the correct length so will go to the practice table later on and try to do as the video instructs, fingers crossed
Thank you for the great videos. I was wondering what your opinion is on the stroke used in other cue sports like 8,9, or 10 ball. The stroke is considerably different yet they are trying to achieve the same result. Why is there a difference in stroke?
Hi Bart, by the way l think you are probably the best out there explaining so good for people. What l was wondering would it be possible to use a camera on the cue, so we would have a better idea of where you make contact on the cue ball for the next position of the cue ball. I know you have brilliant videos explaining all of this, but to see what you see and do would be very helpful. There is a 147 on youtube with camera on the cue. What you could do is youb explain where the white needs to be for the next red or colour and pause and then we at home can guess where your cue is going to be on the white for the shot. And when we start to get it right, then it will be easier to make it stick in our minds and remember when we play. Just a thought.
Hi Kevin, Thanks a lot for the positive comments. Much appreciated. That is actually something I hope to do in the near future Kevin. Just need to invest in the camera when I have some spare cash and then I will film that type of video 😀

Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me, how high should the shoulder be, i.e. should you put tension on your shoulder? Secondly, I was wondering if you could tell me, how much elevation is optimal? I know that players try to minimize elevation, but at the same time they need to keep their shoulder high, which will cause some elevation right? Would it be possible for you to show a close up side view of the cue tip showing the angle coming into the table?

It's exactly like I describe in this video. All you can do is control the cue. When you are first practicing this, do now worry at all whether you pot or get position. Just concentrate on delivering the cue. Just get used to the feeling of having control and hitting the cue ball. As you get more used to it, you will also start potting more balls and controlling the white. Hope that helps 🙂

to be more accurate about stun, make sure the cue ball always in " very little back spin mode or no spin at all" when it touch the object ball. So, it depend how far the distance also and how much power u put on the cue ball.
There are differences and they may feel a bit different when you play, but neither one is 'better' than the other. Maple cue does not have an grain on the shaft, you it looks smooth as you are down on the shot. Ash cues have grain on the shaft and have 'arrows' in the grain that point down the line of the cue. It just depends what you prefer. One isn't better than the other.
Yes completely normal. We normally have 4 points of contact when we get down to the shot: 1) the grip 2) the bridge 3) the chest 4) the chin All these points contact the cue and help to keep it online.
When you watch the pro’s on tv you can see that just before they strike the white they’re actually bending the cue, I never understood that, how can you deliver the cue when there’s that much pressure on it? Can you explain?
It's not much pressure actually, it doesn't take much to get that little bend as they do a full backswing. It's actually caused by the head being still and the chin pushing down on the cue as they pull it back. As the arm is pulled back, the cue always wants to rise very slightly, but because as I say they don't move and keep the head and chin down on the cue, this causes that bend you see on TV when the camera is zoomed right in.
