    An unusual piece. It's unfortunate that such works are performed too rarely in concert halls, as they provide us with a much better understanding of the development of classical music in the late 19th/early 20th centuries.

    Amazing music. The hymn heard in the end of 3rd and 4th movements is one of the most well-known melodies in Finland and Sweden, called in Finland the "Summer Hymn" (sang when the school ends before summer). The melody was published already 1695 in a Swedish hymnal book, and in 1701 in a Finnish one. Melody probably has German-Baltic origin, the lyrics is thought to have roots in a Medieval erotic poem, dating back to the 13th century.

      I checked the score whether Melartin would have written something of the origin of the melody there, but no, it just says "assai semplice" over the main melody

    This work from Ekki Melartin is written quite in a romantic trditional style, with some postromntic features, rather in orchestration than in harmmony. But why, after all? Everybody cannoy be Debussy, Ravel, Stravoinsky, Mahler or Schoenberg. This is an extremely well written symphony, which brings toether a rater pastoral tone unity and intesrsting contrasting sections wu ithout surprising disruptions. All in all, a rather traditional but excellent music. We ALSO need such kind of words.
    I do note that the birth and death dates of the composer are absolutely the same than "our" Ravel. My God, leave more time to geniuses to soften our civilizations and call to YOU dictators much earlier.

    To those who are interested: "The finale is a robust rondo. The timpani and strings lead into a new version of the symphony’s main theme. The finale too is lucid and goes through several themes before launching into the “Summer Hymn” as a solemn chorale. While the melody is of Swedish origin, it is well known to all Finns and carries National Romantic overtones.".....Source: www.fmq.fi/2000/03/erkki-melartin-a-symphonic-composer-of-international-stature/

      Actually, the Hymn is one of the most well-known melodies in Sweden and Finland, sang in Church, and in Finland, always when the school ends before summer and recently, at weddings too. That's why the hymn is called in Finland "the Summer Hymn". But the melody itself doesn't carry "National Romantic overtones", despite what Räihälä writes in the link above. The melody was published already 1695 in a Swedish hymnal book, and in 1701 in a Finnish one. Melody may have German roots, the lyrics is thought to have roots in a Medieval erotic poem, dating back to the 13th century.

    • @henrijar
      @henrijar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@klop4228 Yap, but the problem is in the term "national romantic". The Hymn is German-Baltic with medieval natural erotic lyrics, and as a Finn I never experienced this hymn of having any kind of national feeling, so at least for me those overtones do not sound, unlike the overtones of love, youth, summer, optimism or peace. Melartin's music in general can only partially be categorized as "national romantic", he had a very universal ideology

    • @klop4228
      @klop4228 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was just thinking that if someone were to use a Scottish folk song (I live in Scotland) it would have some kind of Nationalist connotations, even if the song isn't that Nationalistic. But only to some extent.

      C'est vrai ! Mais je reste sidéré par l'époque de réalisation de cette symphonie. A unos les gusta lo clásico y romántico, en cambio a otros - chirridos y estridencias. Como dicen - «el gusto se rompe en generos». En esto consiste el encanto de la música. Pero eso sí - deberían tocar mucho más las obras de estos compositores dizque «de segunda, desconocidos y eclecticistas»...
