I think doing the accuracy test again after a good cleaning may do wonders for improvement. Just a guess but the inconsistency may be due to the bolt and chamber being gummed up.
For target shooting, I usually pop 3 rounds into the berm before I address the target, just to season the barrel. Especially when switching to a different flavor of bullet.
I've shot CCI for years, and I always get "1 flyer." I know others talk down Browning BPR .22 hp but I consistently get tight nickel sized groups at 50 yards out of my Savage with it ... with NO flyer's. Nice gun!
I would just like to take this time to say that after 3 plus years of searching for 22's, I finally found some at the local Walmart. The guy that took them out of the display case said that he had just put them in there and that was why I was lucky to get them. I can now die knowing that my "bucket list" is complete.
I have a Savage Mod 93 I think. It's 22WMR and it's incredibly accurate. I can hit 4" clay targets at 200 Meters consistently. Love the gun and would recommend to everyone.
If you guys would watch to the end he says the gun is dirty and when it was clean the gun shot much better without the flyers. YES I do agree I would have rather watched a accuracy test with the gun clean. It also seems suspect that they have special ammo for the gun.
Please test the CZ 512. Others testing it have found it superior in accuracy and reliability to the Savage, it is more expensive but it looks like a better value in terms of dollars-for-quality.
I would hope you will clean that rifle and see if you still get the one flyer. That flyer would stop me from buying the rifle. I have the 17 hmr and it is a tack driver. Gun won't run more than 2 rounds at a time but the accuracy is excellent. Thanks for your reviews.

Almost every rifle shoots different with a cold barrel. If using it for hunting, a person should zero it for your FIRST SHOT. Of course, I don't do that either. But, it would probably be beneficial.
+Jamie Sloan, I like to zero my 308 win with a cold barrel every shot, when I go deer hunting. One shot usually does the job and its out of a very cold barrel.

I am bout 60 now. My Dad was a marksmen in the Army who is alive and 82 and shot a lot of .308 and My Brother is a cnc Master Machinist who has his own business. Between the two of them they do many of the things a good re loader should do, Make sure the cases are in perfect shape. Reload them for your specific gun. if you can seat them as close to the rifling part of the barrel it would be mush better. (when the shell goes in the barrel ) One should probably research this area. I realize I can't explain everything in this short time. there are so many little things that one should check. I got so tired of one dang flyer ruining my 4-touching groups that I now shoot 6 not 5 (expecting 1 flyer) so I simply throw out the worst of the 6. It's gotta be Murphy because I get one in 8 out of 10 5 or 6 round groups. When I have a friendly competitive shoot-out I tell them to shoot 6 and measure the best 5. It's really helped to allay frustration.
I have read online that the flyer phenomenon is due to barrel harmonics. There is supposedly a way to work up hand loads to minimize the issue. Though I’m not sure if it holds true with rimfire, this was centerfire. As I remember it’s something to do with barrel whip. The bull barrels address this somewhat as well to my understanding. Of course factory ammo is going to produce the flyer effect in any gun because it’s not consistent enough. I think without hand-loading it makes sense to use match grade ammo and a bull barrel. There are other factors that may play a factor as well the barrel temp and of course the nut behind the trigger.
Blued steel equals no deal. I will not be a full time gunsmith to maintain. Does this come in stainless? Stainless and polymer stock is the winning combination.
My stepdad just bought one for me today to replace my old Ithaca m49 magnum that wouldn’t eject a fired casing. First impressions aren’t that bad other than the fact it’ll only shoot cci. Which isn’t necessarily bad because cci is my personal favorite Man I’m only 13 and I have a 12 gauge, a .50 cal, and now 2 .22s
That first shot that you call a"flyer"is due to the barrel cooling off,if you time the shots apart EXACTLY like the first shot,your groups will be closer to being exactly the same Plinkster.This is why in part the military only fire"3 shot groups"and not"5 shot groups".

In my opinion, you just can't beat a bolt. They generally cost less, are easier to clean and are usually more accurate. a little too much movement with a semi, so accuracy maybe suffers. my dad always said a solid foundation produces solid results. Groups weren't bad at all, but the flyers? who the heck knows. Could be anything.

I enjoy your videos, which are always entertaining & factual. As much as I do not like to be critical there was a point of procedure by Savage that you did not adhere to. The mag is to be loaded on an open bolt not a closed one. Other than that keep up the good work...shoot often & shoot straight!

Just got the Savage 93 f in .22 mag it shoots Federal game. shok 50 gr great. Only shot at 30 yd so far as my bench is frozen to the ground and can not move it, but first 5 shots you could cover with a dime. It is - 7 C today so will try 50 Yd. when it warms up a bit My scope is a 1.5 X to 6X power. This is my first .22 mag rifle.
It's a BIG SHAME that with your skills and the momentum of your TH-cam work you haven't shown us a bigger range of 22mag rifles. And which (among of those) rifle/ammo combinations merit a reasonable 200-300-yard accuracy.

Flyers came when U changed ammo or when U reloaded. A long range shooter was talking about the changing of ammo & said that all ammo leaves its own amounts of lead/copper n a barrel & the changing of ammo would change the way it left each barrel. Also, barrel temperature would do the same type of change n hitting target. Was shocked somewhat when he explained how he would NOT clear the barrel when cleaning...more or less just cleaning a little powder out & lubricating. He stated with his long range guns that he tried to shoot the same ammo n each gun & would keep it hitting more successfully than thoroughly cleaning the barrel. Charles Loveday You're exactly right!!! The same ammo, will make its own print inside the barrel, and shoot a lot more consistent. I don't even clean my bore, until I start to get accuracy issues(which takes awhile). You need to keep the action clean, tho... Just my opinion.

well done presentation, thanks! I yearn to have the semi auto, but here is the deal.....failure to fire, failure to feed and jam ups. I have watched a load of videos rating this gun and there is for sure a finicky side to the beast regarding ammo. When they develop a "special" ammo for a weapon you better take note, it is a sure fire tip off to ammo headaches. Overall I really like the design, the flush magazine is great but it is offset by the polymer construction which over time is going to become a liability through wear and shift of dimensions, you can't escape those qualities when dealing with plastics. I am slowly realizing that the bolt action model 93 is a much better choice in terms of reliability and endurance, they shoot superbly too which is what we all seek.
I'll stick with my Marlin XT-22Mag in bolt action. Stays consistently accurate with most ammo, but I favor the CCI Maxi mag 40grain hollowpoints for hunting.
Thats the load I used to use for hunting as back then soft point ammo was impossible to find but today thats the only type I can find . I found an unopened box of CCI maxi hollow points in my closet 2 days ago ,I know they were purchased about 35 yrs ago they had a price tag from a LGS that I still use today $9.95
My Savage A22 always throws a flyer when the first round is loaded by releasing the bolt manually. Don't get flyers when the gun is cycling by a fired round. Nice video.
@@cowstable I've got the a22mag varmit with boyd stock,and yeah im wondering when you cycle the first round in the bullet gets scuffed going into the chamber. I've glass bedded it and barrell is free floated. I'm not impressed. First round is way off. If I can get it to cycle and keep barrel warm it's ok group. Otherwise it's a shotgun pattern. Like I say I paid a bit extra for the pro varmint and I've shot it a lot. Maybe it is scope.

Missing my 22 mag semiauto H&R. It was stolen many years ago. Haven’t found one worth replacing it. I’m looking at the Ruger models the hardest due to finding different makes and models at the local shooting gallery. Anyway the Ruger would hold its own at 65 yards on 3 round semi burst. Versus the CZ or even unfortunately the Savage. I would shoot up to 50rds per make and still the Ruger wouldn’t hang up and held it’s 1 1/4 inch groups. So even now the Ruger 22 mag semiauto is hard to find.
I know this is 6 years ago when replying, I’m getting a Australian model only A22r Magnum that is one of these with a manual release in front of the trigger. (We cannot have semi auto rifles of any type) It’s secondhand,cheap and $500 cheaper than buying than a new stainless American Ruger 22 magnum I was planning to buy. Looking at all the reviews of these rifles, the polymer stock could be a real issue with this grouping, when you place the stock into the forward holder it adds upward pressure to the stock and barrel. When you fire the first round it resets the pressure and changes the aim.
I think the flyers are just where the gun hits with cold action due to gumming. The rest of the group comes together only when firing relatively fast keeping the action hot
seems to me the first shot warms up the barrel then the next four are then close together try six shots disregard the first warm up shot I like the Henry Golden Boy 22 mag, and 22lr

Sorry, but it is not the cooler or hotter air. its the difference how the bolt is closing. What if you close the Bolt, make a shot and wait for an hour? Then make the second shot. Then wait another hour.... I beleve the holes looks like them on plinksters video.

Glad to see another autoloading .22mag. I have the Remington 597 in .22mag and absolutely love the rifle. It seems to be much more consistent than this rifle but the magazine design is inferior it appears. Those fliers would drive me nuts.
Do you know about "cold barrel" shots. POA from cold barrel and hot barrel can be as much as 1.5 inches or more depending on ambient temp of cold barrel and hot barrel.
That poor grouping is attributed directly to the flimsy synthetic stock. see Cavedweller 59 videos changing that factory stock to a Boyds Laminated stock and bedding it. I have had similar results with 3 Savages. 1. A17 1. B Mag in 17 WSM 1. A22 It turned them from embarrassing groups with flyers to tack drivers.
if the .22 m became more popular and the price went down on ammo i can see some definite worth in it, but currently .22lr comes at about 300 to 500 rounds for $30 depending on quality
PLEASE - Try this SAME gun with a BETTER Scope. Bushnell is fine for weekend warriors and cans, however for that weapon being tested I feel strongly a FFP scope would deliver a more accurate assessment. Thanks for your excellent work.
Scopes have nothing to do with inherent accuracy, if it holds zero, it is fine for testing. Can you explain how a FFP scope, or any scope for that matter, is going to make a gun more inherently/mechanically accurate? At 100yds, a FFP scope is not going to make any difference in a shooters ability to make accurate shots either, you are not ranging with your scope, so FFP is unnecessary. As a matter of fact, a SFP scope gives you a finer aiming point at higher magnification levels, which would make shooting a tighter group a bit easier from the bench. This is why F class and other types of target shooting done from a fixed position at known ranges, are overwhelmingly shot with SFP scopes.
Bravo!! 👍You are correct about the safety being "placed just where it should be"! Very few if any writers/ bloggers acknowledge this, it is safe, effective, ergonomic, and keeps your finger OUT if the trigger guard until ready to shoot. I wish ALL of my rifles had safeties located forward or the trigger guard👍
I have this rifle. Mine loves the heavier grain round front ammo. Will not cycle a polymer tip round ever. Not even once. Very surprised to see that one cycle it. All in all when the gun finds its preferred ammo it runs great.

How about a review on the A22 .22LR not sure about the .22 mag as you can get CCI stingers 32 grain at 1,640 fps not a lot of difference and the .22 LR. can also shoot 40 gr mini mags.1235 fps or for target CCI Standard all these rounds are much cheaper than the .22 mag and not a lot of difference when in comes to hunting any thing up to fox and coyote. I just picked up the A22 .22LR and it comes with sights. Only 25 rounds through it and getting 1/2" holes out side to out side. Would like to see what you think about it.
PAPA MUNTZ Messin with ya, dude. I usually shoot dime size groups at 50, with my Marlin 881 bolt .22lr. I use the same ammo, and I don't clean my bore, until I start to get accuracy issues.... I'm happy with those groups, out of an inexpensive gun, using cheap ammo.
I shoot a .17 HMR and at 100 yards it is a tack driver. I will get 1/4 to 1/2 inch groups dead center when my scope is on. I hope that these .22 magnum rifles can do better than what you are getting with it. It may be the ammo and the fact that it is semi Automatic.
98 22 magnum is a brand-new does not even have a hundred rounds through it yet but I am lucky to get three shots off before it starts hanging up I have tried different ammo I have tried putting different amount of bullets in the clips but it seems to hang up every time I do not think it is the action I think it is the clip

Just got the Savage 93 f in .22 mag it shoots Federal game. shok 50 gr great. Only shot at 30 yd so far as my bench is frozen to the ground and can not move it, but first 5 shots you could cover with a dime. It is - 7 C today so will try 50 Yd. when it warms up a bit My scope is a 1.5 X to 6X power. This is my first .22 mag rifle.

I still use my H&K 300 semi-auto 22mag which has a great factory trigger. At 50yds it’ll stay in the 0.3’s at 50yds.
Your "flyers" are cold barrel shot. Aim low and to the right for the first shot and zero in closer for each successive shot.
"Minute of Squirrel". This should be the new standard reference syntax. "Minute of X" and insert whatever you are hunting or sighting in for. GENIUS!
It's a BIG SHAME that with your skills and the momentum of your TH-cam work you haven't shown us a bigger range of 22mag rifles. And which (among of those) rifle/ammo combinations merit a reasonable 200-300-yard accuracy.

Flyers came when U changed ammo or when U reloaded. A long range shooter was talking about the changing of ammo & said that all ammo leaves its own amounts of lead/copper n a barrel & the changing of ammo would change the way it left each barrel. Also, barrel temperature would do the same type of change n hitting target. Was shocked somewhat when he explained how he would NOT clear the barrel when cleaning...more or less just cleaning a little powder out & lubricating. He stated with his long range guns that he tried to shoot the same ammo n each gun & would keep it hitting more successfully than thoroughly cleaning the barrel. Charles Loveday You're exactly right!!! The same ammo, will make its own print inside the barrel, and shoot a lot more consistent. I don't even clean my bore, until I start to get accuracy issues(which takes awhile). You need to keep the action clean, tho... Just my opinion.

well done presentation, thanks! I yearn to have the semi auto, but here is the deal.....failure to fire, failure to feed and jam ups. I have watched a load of videos rating this gun and there is for sure a finicky side to the beast regarding ammo. When they develop a "special" ammo for a weapon you better take note, it is a sure fire tip off to ammo headaches. Overall I really like the design, the flush magazine is great but it is offset by the polymer construction which over time is going to become a liability through wear and shift of dimensions, you can't escape those qualities when dealing with plastics. I am slowly realizing that the bolt action model 93 is a much better choice in terms of reliability and endurance, they shoot superbly too which is what we all seek.
This would be an interesting platform chambered in 5.7x28mm FN and also interesting to see if 5.7 can fire 55gr FMJs and what velocity they would go.
I'll stick with my Marlin XT-22Mag in bolt action. Stays consistently accurate with most ammo, but I favor the CCI Maxi mag 40grain hollowpoints for hunting.
Thats the load I used to use for hunting as back then soft point ammo was impossible to find but today thats the only type I can find . I found an unopened box of CCI maxi hollow points in my closet 2 days ago ,I know they were purchased about 35 yrs ago they had a price tag from a LGS that I still use today $9.95
My Savage A22 always throws a flyer when the first round is loaded by releasing the bolt manually. Don't get flyers when the gun is cycling by a fired round. Nice video.
Is it because the bolt does not cycle so far back when driven by a fired round?
@@cowstable I've got the a22mag varmit with boyd stock,and yeah im wondering when you cycle the first round in the bullet gets scuffed going into the chamber. I've glass bedded it and barrell is free floated. I'm not impressed. First round is way off. If I can get it to cycle and keep barrel warm it's ok group. Otherwise it's a shotgun pattern. Like I say I paid a bit extra for the pro varmint and I've shot it a lot. Maybe it is scope.
I have an A17 and love it. I don’t have the A22 yet.
I may be wrong but maybe a nice rigid wood stock & a glass bedding would make all the difference. Just taking a guess though.

Missing my 22 mag semiauto H&R. It was stolen many years ago. Haven’t found one worth replacing it. I’m looking at the Ruger models the hardest due to finding different makes and models at the local shooting gallery. Anyway the Ruger would hold its own at 65 yards on 3 round semi burst. Versus the CZ or even unfortunately the Savage. I would shoot up to 50rds per make and still the Ruger wouldn’t hang up and held it’s 1 1/4 inch groups. So even now the Ruger 22 mag semiauto is hard to find.
I know this is 6 years ago when replying, I’m getting a Australian model only A22r Magnum that is one of these with a manual release in front of the trigger. (We cannot have semi auto rifles of any type)
It’s secondhand,cheap and $500 cheaper than buying than a new stainless American Ruger 22 magnum I was planning to buy.
Looking at all the reviews of these rifles, the polymer stock could be a real issue with this grouping, when you place the stock into the forward holder it adds upward pressure to the stock and barrel. When you fire the first round it resets the pressure and changes the aim.
I think the flyers are just where the gun hits with cold action due to gumming. The rest of the group comes together only when firing relatively fast keeping the action hot

First experience with 22mag is with the Ruger six single action/w drop in 22mag cyl. The cartridge is alot of fun & this is a nice tack driving rifle.

Don't want to sound like I'm nitpicking but you can't discount "flyers" in shooting groups. All rounds shot count as group size.

seems to me the first shot warms up the barrel
then the next four are then close together
try six shots disregard the first warm up shot

It is not because the rifle is warm, its because the closing of the bolt is not the same when you make it with your hand or through a shot
No it is from the barrel and the air in the barrel being cooler with the first shot, it slightly throws off the ballistics.

Still have an old military rifle holds a 2 inch group at a hundred fifty yards that's had over 20,000 rounds through it and corroded
I’ve always had the best luck with Winchester and Federal ammo
A dirty gun will also caught flyers and open up the group. All due respect the barrel needs to be cleaned to get an accurate group size.
Clean the rifle then fire two or three rounds to warm up and foul the barrel. Then run your 5 shot test group.

Glad to see another autoloading .22mag. I have the Remington 597 in .22mag and absolutely love the rifle. It seems to be much more consistent than this rifle but the magazine design is inferior it appears.

Do you know about "cold barrel" shots. POA from cold barrel and hot barrel can be as much as 1.5 inches or more depending on ambient temp of cold barrel and hot barrel.

First round is first flier cooler barrel ? Mine are always the first round with semi auto like the 10-22 and savage .
That poor grouping is attributed directly to the flimsy synthetic stock. see Cavedweller 59 videos changing that factory stock to a Boyds Laminated stock and bedding it. I have had similar results with 3 Savages. 1. A17 1. B Mag in 17 WSM 1. A22 It turned them from embarrassing groups with flyers to tack drivers.

I have that gun that you got there but mine is not the Magnum mine is just a semi-automatic wrong rifle but it is a Savage semi-automatic

if the .22 m became more popular and the price went down on ammo i can see some definite worth in it, but currently .22lr comes at about 300 to 500 rounds for $30 depending on quality
PLEASE - Try this SAME gun with a BETTER Scope. Bushnell is fine for weekend warriors and cans, however for that weapon being tested I feel strongly a FFP scope would deliver a more accurate assessment.

Scopes have nothing to do with inherent accuracy, if it holds zero, it is fine for testing. Can you explain how a FFP scope, or any scope for that matter, is going to make a gun more inherently/mechanically accurate? At 100yds, a FFP scope is not going to make any difference in a shooters ability to make accurate shots either, you are not ranging with your scope, so FFP is unnecessary. As a matter of fact, a SFP scope gives you a finer aiming point at higher magnification levels, which would make shooting a tighter group a bit easier from the bench. This is why F class and other types of target shooting done from a fixed position at known ranges, are overwhelmingly shot with SFP scopes.
Bravo!! 👍You are correct about the safety being "placed just where it should be"! Very few if any writers/ bloggers acknowledge this, it is safe, effective, ergonomic, and keeps your finger OUT if the trigger guard until ready to shoot. I wish ALL of my rifles had safeties located forward or the trigger guard👍
I have this rifle. Mine loves the heavier grain round front ammo. Will not cycle a polymer tip round ever. Not even once. Very surprised to see that one cycle it. All in all when the gun finds its preferred ammo it runs great.

How about a review on the A22 .22LR not sure about the .22 mag as you can get CCI stingers 32 grain at 1,640 fps not a lot of difference and the .22 LR. can also shoot 40 gr mini mags.1235 fps or for target CCI Standard all these rounds are much cheaper than the .22 mag and not a lot of difference when in comes to hunting any thing up to fox and coyote. I just picked up the A22 .22LR and it comes with sights. Only 25 rounds through it and getting 1/2" holes out side to out side. Would like to see what you think about it.

PAPA MUNTZ Messin with ya, dude. I usually shoot dime size groups at 50, with my Marlin 881 bolt .22lr. I use the same ammo, and I don't clean my bore, until I start to get accuracy issues.... I'm happy with those groups, out of an inexpensive gun, using cheap ammo.
I shoot a .17 HMR and at 100 yards it is a tack driver. I will get 1/4 to 1/2 inch groups dead center when my scope is on. I hope that these .22 magnum rifles can do better than what you are getting with it. It may be the ammo and the fact that it is semi Automatic.

98 22 magnum is a brand-new does not even have a hundred rounds through it yet but I am lucky to get three shots off before it starts hanging up I have tried different ammo I have tried putting different amount of bullets in the clips but it seems to hang up every time I do not think it is the action I think it is the clip
