This was recorded in 2012. Things are very different in China now, 11 years later.

Mr. Martin Jacques, your country, England, should imitate China and implement a one-party system and socialism with English characteristics

Which them? Putting the Uighurs in concentration camps and organ harvesting them. Giving the World covid, then lying about it? Defrauding and further impoverishing much of the third world with the expensive and shoddy infrastructure, provided by the belt and road initiative. Massive surveillance of their own people, coupled with their social credit system, that means that anyone the CCP is not happy with has their future destroyed, if the do not die in prison. My!!! I could go on and on.

There are no limits to political models that can exist . Even America democracy is not the same as UK democracy. So, it's meaningless to dictate what democracy is except when one is narrow minded.
China is a Democracy in the sense that a super majority of China population Strongly support their 1-party state and ACCEPT such a political model. Democracy is based on Majority DECISION. The majority in China Accept CCP strongly.
Why must democracy comprise the typical voting process? Democracy is about Majority Acceptance.
We can redefine democracy also. Language allows for ambiguity. I can also say China people Voted CCP with their hearts.

I think he made some valid points especially the 'holier than thou' attitude of the West as we got so many things wrong ourselves! This was recorded over 10 years ago and the situation has somewhat changed both for China and the West!

Singapore is not a liberal democracy as termed by the west, Malaysia is mostly muslim population with totally different culture. Taiwan is a liberal democracy with stagnating economic growth, the gap between the rich and poor widening, with rampant corruption, compared to the growth during the one party state is totally different.

This guy knows nothing about China, go read some history and you will know our financial progress was at the cost of human rights and freedom. You might think it's all worth it, but you have no idea how I would rather to have the freedom even that means I have to live a much poorer life.

No country system are perfect, they still on developing and change accordingly to the country's situation. Now China and their population are supported the government with current system and enjoying the happy life they never achieved before . Why USA and western force China to follow their democracy system who are now so corrupt and rotten to bottom of the roots which the master was rich capitalis and intellectual controlling the country by neglected normal working citizens even three basic need cannot be guaranteed .
