I'm perfectly agree. Very often the contrapuntal technique is pulsating life, in Bach. I see a very strong metaphor in it, which perhaps is the one captured by this pianist. Each person comes into the world necessarily conditioned by the inheritance of the past of the person who brought him into the world and the context in which he finds himself. There are patterns that are at the same time the conditions of our existence and what binds us into a feeling of anguish. The variation, the counterpoint are metaphors of the soul that with difficulty, through its bonds, tries to build a self beyond itself to reach authenticity. A man like Bach, a son of his time, interprets in the search for God this realization of a soul that is necessarily born separated from its creator and that struggles against his limits (sin, for example) to rejoin him. In today's vision of this pianist, perhaps there is no longer a God who ensures a safe haven for the authenticity of human existence, but the sensation that each of us experiences at least once, in feeling evanescent, inauthentic if he does not test himself to go beyond what is taken for granted, beyond the "given song" remains. And I think this author's reinterpretation of Bach's work is enchanting.
This piece is new to me AND it is J.S. Bach. Since I first heard a performance of his “Jesu, joy of man’s desiring” when about twelve years old I was immediately transported into a realm of celestial, gracious beauty the likes I had never experienced. It is an indelible, precious memory that has since grown into an inspirational spark of lyricism when some years ago I composed a verse to that great chorale and sang it at a wedding anniversary celebration. I am moved by every piece I have heard by this great musical genius. PWG

Congratulations Daniil. I'm really glad he decided to start playing more and more trascendental pieces from the piano literature. No need for crazy virtuosism, we already know he is a beast at the piano.
I was moved at the practice struggle with the entire Art of the Fugue, the work that Bach, blind and mind humming, is said to have dictated to his son. The wonderful TRIFONOV with his beautiful Fazioli Pianoforte 20th century instrument in a room next to the fire in the hearth, the wall filled with the score to the fugues like a detective examining the record of the event that led to Bach’s final gift to us all. The performer struggles to get into Bach’s mind and find the “Affect” for every note. It leads him to dreams and not to a machine, like the modern Pianoforte but into the organic world of all life and yes to the tree as well, but most of all the resolution to the question Bach posed for us all. Bravo to the artists involved in bringing this heritage of western civilization into the present when it was not so long ago mankind’s political ego and warlike nature bombing the libraries, architecture and paintings that was the legacy of the past to the world. I’m thankful for the shards that are left as we still contemplate war for fun and personal profit. Ray Evans Harrell,
I’d close your eyes then. We’re living in the digital world of audio and video, I thought the video was great, very different, and doesn’t distract. One thing that remains with the video being present, is the music.
His pandemic living room concert of the entire Art of Fugue was epic. 70 minutes straight through. No words do it justice. It may have been in conjuction with the Verbier Festival.
this clip fully reflects the life of a musician and how much work and sacrifice there is behind such a high level!! I don't know in this world how much we have understood that this guy the greatest pianist in the universe right now no one right now is better than him and I don't think in the last 30 or 40 years there has been anyone better than him just a musician can fully understand the level of this guy who is extremely stratospheric he is such a complete pianist as one rarely hears when he plays he practically found himself in another dimension both mental and physical and we have all seen this it is useless for anyone to do the hypocrite, this guy is the best in the world by far, there are many great pianists but no one like him !!!!🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Genius from Bach and Trifonov. The beauty of music is that it can be interpreted endlessly and in this case, completed in thousands of ways. We will never know what Bach intended, but we can be inspired to try as Daniil has done here and for that, we should applaud and thank him.

I feel that this beautiful performance is trivialized by this video. Daniil doesnt need gimicks to make his work appealing. His playing and expressions are spellbinding in and of themselves. fascinating.
I usually don't like it when pianists constantly play out the fugue subject while keeping the other lines hidden in the background. However here it has the effect of a chorale theme soaring over the other parts which I think works perfectly for this piece.
When the pieces of Bach are completed (which is the case for all of them except this one), they look (or rather listen) obvious until their last note. But when they are not, it is such a struggle to complete them, even by a genious musician like Daniil Trifonov. But the result is there: congratulations! This is a great moment of music (and of cinema).
Nash 😌

Can't believe there are so many whinging people here complaining about the video and Trifonov's fingernails. Why worry about these things, if it doesn't affect the music...
Deutsche Grammophon is the best classical music label, Trifonov is the most outstanding pianist of our time. I appreciate his capacity to adapt and put himself in new artistic/ "cinematographic" situations, it is an added proof that he is special and unique. Except for that, no one notices that it is a musical video without any add, for the reason that it IS an add: Deutsche Grammophon is auto promoting its new product (Trifonov's cd) and more simply they chose to not cut the music and spread a two minutes video, that would have sponsored the CD but also killed the music. We shouldn't take for granted such things like sitting on the sofa and listening to one of the best musicians of our time playing a masterpiece three hundred years old, for free. Thanks Deutsche Grammophon, thanks Daniil; now, you critics, go and buy a CD, or better, a ticket!!
I have the utmost respect for Trifonov in opting to dedicate so much time and effort to The Art of Fugue. His interpretations often stand with Sokolov's, Gould's, and Zhu xiao Mei's. I particularly love how he sheds new light on the contrapuncti 8 and 11 with his carefully placed rubati and demonic drive. However, I find the existence of this video utterly flabergasting: if someone didn't already appreciate (or wasn't already capable of appreciating) THE ART OF FUGUE, would this jumpy dream sequence in which the director chose to cut every 2 seconds help them in doing so? Conversely, if someone already did appreciate the music, does this add anything at all to the experience? Why is the accompanying video to one of the most profound pieces ever written as _about_ the process of the performer's learning it as possible? Can you for a moment see Richter, Gould, Zhu Xiao Mei, Sokolov etc or many other great artists agreeing to such a video and putting _themselves_ center stage in one of their performances? Would not a simple video of the performance have sufficed? Like I say, I have the utmost respect for Trifonov but simply cannot understand what this video is supposed to add, or why it exists.
It's almost as if different people enjoy different things? Perhaps the video and the atmosphere it portrays could resonate with someone not currently 'into' classical music. Or perhaps some people just enjoy music videos? You're able to purchase and listen to this CD without any distractions, so why is it such an issue that it's available in another form here, that is both free, and optional to view? I'm not one for music videos, but your comment just screams narrow minded elitism and being completely out of touch.

There are octaves in left hand can you tell me about the polyphony you are talking about
I was moved at the practice struggle with the entire Art of the Fugue, the work that Bach, blind and mind humming, is said to have dictated to his son.

Exquisite. Daniil's sensitive rendering of Bach's counterpoint is profound and overwhelming. I can do without the video.
I’d close your eyes then. We’re living in the digital world of audio and video, I thought the video was great, very different, and doesn’t distract. One thing that remains with the video being present, is the music.
Hopefully it'll be released on spotify and other music streaming platform!

This piece has the same sense of valedictory wisdom as Chopin's Nocturne Op 62 no 2. Both are beautiful blends of sadness, reconciliation and hope.
His pandemic living room concert of the entire Art of Fugue was epic. 70 minutes straight through. No words do it justice. It may have been in conjuction with the Verbier Festival.
Absolutely lovely -- understated and wonderful . . .

this clip fully reflects the life of a musician and how much work and sacrifice there is behind such a high level!!

It's not a gimmick. It's just different.
Its DG's marketing (which he accepted).
Beautiful completion with this ghostly yet majestic ending.
I usually don't like it when pianists constantly play out the fugue subject while keeping the other lines hidden in the background. However here it has the effect of a chorale theme soaring over the other parts which I think works perfectly for this piece.
Love the story in the video and the twist is brilliant. I didn't see it coming, and I thought I'm quite good at spotting them.
I love love love the complementing video to the dreamy music. So tastefully done, so intense the entire whole of it.
Thanks, Dan, for the wonderful performance last night for Gil Shiva ar Carnegie Hall..

I was working and had this in the background. I stop myself to see who's playing. Excellent!
Video is absurd nonsense but the playing/execution is stunning. The fact that TH-cam insults the listener by shoving advertisements into the midst of a sensitive progression, is disgusting. Either put them at the beginning or end, that is acceptable.
Even the "completion" is convincing!

Well said!
@@dcytol "The truth of the matter is that the video is simply banale, mindless crap and has no place anywhere within a billion miles (preferably infinitely further) of the music of J.S. Bach" - beautifully put 😂
@@SergieRachmaninoff And you're writing this on behalf of the people who _enjoy_ that sort of videos as if those poor creatures can not speak for themselves. Who's the elitist in here?
There are many forms of art. I found the video to be poetic as well, if a bit different from the music. Please watch it again to see the metaphors.

WONDERFUL performance! Thank you, Daniel! You have a true gift for the world! :)
It is my life goal to finish contrapunctua 14 and this is absolutely fantastic, though i see it as a proper ending to this song but not the art of fugue. A fugue of fugues, consider incorporating all prior motifs in the resolution
By far the greatest pianist of this era. His name should be mentioned along with Rubenstein, Rachmaninoff, and HOrowitz. The more he ages, the more he looks like a Russian monk - I wonder if he would write any Russian choral music for the Orthodox church.

All music should have no other end and aim than the glory of God and the soul's refreshment; where this is not remembered there is no real music but only a devilish hubbub.”
