One of my favorite groups. My good friend and I went to Baker's Keyboard Lounge to see them. He had a terrible cold but still insisted we go see them. During a break in their set, Regina bought my friend a hot toddy to help him with his cold. He is no longer with us but any time I hear their music or Regina's music, I think of my friend. Just down to earth ladies.
i make it a point to see straight ahead every time they come to lansing incredible musicians..... thats it ladies representing the D...... i am from Detroit and is proud of all of these ladies ...and to the drummer my heart goes out to you in the loss of your mother...i too lost mine a few yrs ago... but... i know she's proud of you and will always b with you
I LOVE Straight Ahead! I too am surprised that no one on TH-cam knows about them. Especially since Regina Carter came out of this group. These are some baaaaaaaad sistahs!
For real! Got to meet them many years ago when were just starting out and visited our school in Norfolk, VA. Supremely talented and personable, these lovely ladies of jazz made a lasting impression on a certain young man, who, as a result of that meeting, became a lifelong Straight Ahead fan. I, too, miss their sound.
I’ve been trying to find this album online for the longest time but I couldn’t find it. I FINALLY found it on Amazon! One copy (CD version) left AND I GOT IT! Yay Me!!!
In the earlier years of the Jazz festival I co-founded in Buffalo now named after my deceased partner, Pappy Martin, we had this fantastic group play at least five years in a row, every summer. We could not get enough. I discovered them in Detroit in 1997, while scouting the area for exceptional jazz. I also discovered the great Be-bop policeman of Detroit, Mr. Donald Walden, another multiple repeat performer. we complemented him with Grover's brother, Darryl Washington, Ahmad Jamal's bassist Sabu Adeyola, and the incomparable Niagara Falls brightest star, Bobby Jones on keys. But this story is about Detroit and it's legendary jazz history. I only wish I could have had Regina Carter too, but the ladies were so, so, strong anyway.
Omg! I am from Buffalo. I am getting ready to hear Regina Carter in concert here in Atlanta. The Martin family are family friends of ours - my Dad Alfred Johnson would sometimes sing with Pappy - May his soul Rest In Peace. I play some of straight ahead’s music on the piano. Glad to know Buffalo has a jazz festival. Blessings.
Then I hope Ms.Princessaj that you check out the Pappy Martin Jazz Society via google, and catch up with Dawn Berry-Martin. You know, the great city of Toronto is the connector between Buffalo and Detroit for Jazz and Afro centric cultural art and knowledge. I was born in Philly, spent much time on the 95 corridor between NYC and DC, and recognize that southern touch in ATL, Nawlin's, Birmingham, etc. However, that Buffalo, TO, Motown corridor has provided all the jazz I ever needed. The music, the festivals, the multicultural life all there, and now the Raptors are playing for a word title to join those Bluejays. Detroit has a Rodnety Whitaker, TO has a Joe Seeley, well, this could go on all day, but Buffalo has gotten to add all that flavor to it's own jazz festival. Straight Ahead was one of the best blessing we had. The other wsy to get to Detroit from Buffalo is through Ohio. In this vein, does anybody remember Mike Wade, trumpeter, and his former group Standard Time Quintet? OMG the Ohio Connection, along with Serious Young Musicians (SYM) presented by Tomas. Grady Tate...I better stop here, unless anyone has been to Cincinnati's 'Loft Society' where Branford Marsalis used to jam.
One of my good friends is Cynthia Dewberry it tickled me as I worked at a Wachovia in Charlotte, NC where she worked and she is very beautiful but what got me was that she looked familiar to me and I had been looking for them for years and there she was standing in front of me.
So understated and disrespected by the world of Jazz. Been listening to them since their first release. Awesome artists and yet they get no air time on the traditional jazz stations.
I arranged their appearance at my festival with Eileen, a beautiful woman at the center of this group. They were all beautiful to me. My good fortune was to find exceptional talent like this in hotbeds of jazz. In Ohio, I hired the Standard Time Quintet, a Univ. of Cincinnati founded band featuring trumpeter Mike Wade. We hired a few musicians out of Detroit and Philly, but my first effort at hiring a band out of Asia turned out to be students of the Michigan scene under the leadership of S. Korean John Nam. They were mentored by Donald Walden, one of my all-time favorites from the Fish Market, the Be-Bop policeman from Detroit may he rest in peace. Extremely talented.
So many jazz performers were seriously underserved to the world. Straight Ahead was one. STQ was another, now existing in the continued genius of Mike Wade. Chicago's Maggie Brown (daughter of Oscar Brown Jr) and Malachi Thompson are two more. I hired Serious Young Musicians, a rotating membership of middle school-aged musicians and their mentor "Tumas" out of Dayton, Ohio, with a show like I'd never seen. They had won the amateur night at the Apollo before I met them. I once flew to Japan for a show, and to find a jazz CD I had lost 18 years earlier. I found the last remaining copy in a suburb of Tokyo, where I met some superb Japanese jazz performers. In short, I am that fan, and Straight Ahead was one of my best hires. You can google the Pappy Martin Jazz Festival to see many of our acts in the past 25 years and recognize that's saying something. Stay proud, Detroit. We need you.
