Drawing some level of inspiration from Capcom's 1942 and 1943 shoot 'em ups, Ghost Pilots certainly ups the ante Inthe visual stakes. It's fair to say the game looks very impressive, even more so when considering it's a relatively early title for the Neo Geo.
What's less impressive, however, is the actual gameplay. The lack of speed power ups, combined with the girth of your plane, makes for something slow and unwieldy to control, and I just found that I really didn't enjoy the game that much.
Something else I found useless was the air burst/chaffe super weapon. It detonates and projects four explosions around your craft, which nullify enemies and projectiles coming into contact, but it also moves in the direction your pushing on the joystick. To me, it felt like you were supposed to be able to "push" it into enemies, but it just didn't work very well and I wished I stuck to one of the other weapons.

Ghost Pilots is legendary snk shoot em up with Spectacular graphics and STUNNING gameplay
An one hour long Neo Geo game, this by itself is just remarkable!! :-)
Just kidding, I always had a soft spot for this title despite lots of people don't like it.

During my early days of playing Neo Geo, I always found this game more entertaining than Aero Fighters to be honest

Reminds me of games like 1942, 1943, and Sky Shark for the NES.
Definitely feeling like a Toaplan shooter such as Twin Cobra.

This was quite long for a typical shmup, 12 stages taking almost an hour to beat, definitely not something you can finish on your lunch break
What makes this game so hard is how slow your plane moves, given that it's a seaplane instead of a jet, not exactly the kind of aircraft you'd expect to see in a typical shooter
Always used the regular bomb before, but recently I came to appreciate the cluster bomb much more since it activates almost instantly and you're perfectly safe in the center (aside from certain projectiles like flamethrower that can pass through it) same goes for the napalm, low power but long duration
Taito's Flying Shark is one of my all time favourites. I have this AES cart. It is so close to being an excellent FS clone but let down by the speed of your plane. You can't sweep left/right quick enough to do 100% kills.
Proper gameplay testing would have fixed this or in-game speed power ups to suit the players' style. Such a shame.

It's just kinda funny.
Varth: Operation Thunderstorm is similar to Ghost Pilots, but instead of Bomb selection is Pod selection.
Though as nails shmup. Beating it asks for some serious skills, endurance and quite a bit of nerves.
Funny how this vertical shooter is set as horizontal aspect ratio instead of vertical AS, giving the play little room to destroy all enemies.

This has to be the more torturous shmup ever released because the plane and its bullets are soooooooooooo sloooooooowwwwwwwww...
That game was made in December 1990 or January 1991?
First saw the thumbnail, didn't know about the game was. throught this game is made by SNK in very early 90's because the art looks like nam 1975. and that was correct.
I also realized the "ghost pilots" font is just same as 1992 pirate korean arcade game called "S.S. mission". yup the koreans stole it again.

Ghost Pilot was a wasted opportunity. It looks very nice, but plays horribly boring.
SNK didn’t learn much from 80s Toaplan Shoot’em ups, and how they should be made to be actually fun to play.
