I recently sat in at a grappling seminar Joel put on here in south Florida, what a grappling legend!! as a young 90’s sano kid Joel was god. In maturity he is the gate keeper for surfing past, carrying the torch for Donald, phill, skip, Herbie, grubby, Hobie, etc. thank you hombre! 🔥🔥
I met Joel at a fun seminar in NJ and he was genuinely the nicest, most patient dude. He spent several hours just talking shit and hearing questions. Humble and knowledgeable. Great dude, better surfer.
He & I were a handful of teenage long boarders in North county s.d. in the early nineties, thanks for the interview John. Also moved to Hawai'i around '96, it was for sure way different then especially outer islands. I can verify the stories he's saying are very true. Shred on brothers.🤙🤙
I brought a bladed out Ryan Lovelace to try out for the first time, no clue about hulls. Joel paddled by and looked at me and cackled “wrong board hahaha” It was the first time I realized I shouldn’t look up to anyone. Not that they’re lame but it was a kind way of showing me we’re all the same. I also really enjoy riding hulls so thanks Joel!
I’ve been in the water with Joel around 10 times. He was always respectful and never has burned me. He did discipline, my buddy who’s a pastor. I’m glad he did because he needs to be discipline in the water. He’s a wonderful human, but is also a kook in the lineup.
Brown 9'6 single fin, brown/gold beautiful blend, that thing made me life 2013-2018 RIP, it snapped, but I loved that board, I love Joel and appreciate you John, god bless you both, getting me through tough times, I appreciate it :) Many a dudes gave me compliments galor, Dog beach Pier 24 (dog beach) Parking Lot HB Ca. :) I ripped that mf'er well :) from that to the channel between that and Bolsa to south > fucking would take all of up to 17th St., fuck the pier and the queers there :) I love ya guys!!
1:03 Wait! But… Herbie did his share of nose-dodging too didn’t he? And he was super rad! I guess we can set him aside from that “hard to watch” group because of all of his other achievements and contributions to the culture.
