@@joeswanson733 I'd hope they at least had a foot pedal to turn the machine on and off. Push and hold it to keep it on, at least until you've gotten far enough in the process to bend down and hit the "stay on" switch.
British Pathe is currently one of my favorite TH-cam channels, because of nice old footage like this. I also never know what I might find if I search under their videos something like "airplane," "snowball," or "potato."
Update: I searched "pig," and got footage of pigs on a pig swing. There was also footage of teaching a pig to jump, and a pig-calling contest. This channel has much that I might not have otherwise been exposed to.
Just a few years ago, humbugs were manufactured in exactly the same way. It's hard work, the shaft from which the candies are made is heavy, hot and slippery, in addition it deforms easily and you have to move it from the table to the machine, it was a challenge every time!
My uncle Jack worked in this factory, back in 1965. I remember him telling me how the humbug mixture would frequently get wrapped around workers necks, pulling them into the machinery. If you look at around 1:29, those lads manhandling the giant sticky lump are actually in considerable danger. Uncle Jack saw more than a few blokes end up inside a humbug, sucked down the production line head first. Margret is working at the point where heads would roll, quite literally, through the machinery - with the bodies flaying above the production line - blood everywhere.
you'd be laughed out of the shop, same with the fashion for men, nobody lets up on TheReportOfTheWeek. it's a business casual world out there, and it's only getting more casual.
I’ve always wanted a mechanically seperated finger with my humbugs, bet that’s a really good long chew. And it came with a diamond ring! The inscription is….. Margaret???
the sugar would burn your skin off without gloves (I'm exaggerating, 2nd degree burns) and you can't wait for it to cool or it won't pull on the roller
I was born in 1967 in West ham. Yes the music got better to the point it created soul boys. White guys who still didn't have any rhythm. But love to steal. Elvis much??????😂😂😂😂😂
The sheer terror in my imagination thinking about how easily their arms and hands could get sucked into those machines.
and for them... it was just another tuesday and they didn't even blink. that's just how different things were.

Worked a pulling machine in the 80's. Dangerous if you were not paying attention. One bloke had his shirt ripped off!
I admire Margaret's ability to work an 8-hour shift five days a week in 6-inch stilettos.
Was thinking the same.
I said I don't think she does. Heaven forbid a woman in 1967 being filmed in anything less than her best pair of shoes.
@@cynthiatolman326 Yeah, I suppose it might have just been for filming.
You mean 2 inch heels. Geeze
@@mariantreber8055 Heels of any length on a factory floor are silly.
I operated very similar equipment to this in the 1980's. The factory was in Prahran, Melbourne, Australia.
The day the camera is coming, I shall wear high heels to the production line....
She knew this video was getting 3.5M views in 2022

Thanks to this for my new habit of enjoying Humbugs!
Oh Margaret, behave😘👗👠

Good day.....The Netflex series "Bodies" brings me here.

"Bah Humbugs". Wish I had some of those.

You can lose a finger or two while working there
Bah humbug!!! Love 'em.
Wew. This is awsome

3.5 million views and i’m the 8th comment, what’s going on here..
Because most who watched this video said "Bah humbug"

"They says a women's work is never done" lol
What does 'Aj' mean??
You refer to the first 3 "comments," then? Well, "Aj" probably means nothing, in this case. Comments are sometimes nonsense.
Um humbug
4 comments only WTH
I wouldn't count the first 3, since all 3 of them only say "Aj" and nothing else.
Strangely alot of British Pathe videos have a ton of views but few comments.
@@googleuser7454 Perhaps they had comments turned off of many of these for some time, and only opened comments more recently.
@Austin Lucas makes sense.

Notice the music change from euro classical to black man jazz fitting the degeneracy of the 60s that gave us 2020 America

This is taffy
No it's not, they're pretty different. Taffy is soft because it includes butter or oil but humbugs are hard because they do not.

So .... in a Christmas Carol, when scrooge says, bah! humbug!, did he mean candies? So was the candy around back in 1800's in England?
