I absolutely Loved Andy! The way David Jonsson flipped between Malfunctioning and malfunctioning was phenomenal. He deserves recognition for the role. Ian Holm, Lance Henriksen, Michael Fassbender, and now David Jonsson. They have all killed it as "Artificial Persons."
At one point I thought it was possible CGI was being used to manipulate his facial expressions since they were so robotic-looking. Very impressive either way.
There is NO character building... its a bunch of teenagers.... getting a bad idea to loot haunted house.... :D and die in worst riddiculously way ever...

If it would have been a standalone movie, or if someone who did not see anything before watching this, I'm sure this is a pretty ok movie. Not good tho. The characters and actors are still just bad and the plotholes won't go away. I like what Ridley started. It was more, it was deeper, more complex wasn't just about "let's survive somehow".. Then because the majority isn't qualified to enjoy the better, they simply didn't watch it. So it won't down the drain and disney, as usual.. Just ruined it.
Aliens stalking you is one thing, but a mass of Facehuggers chasing you is a whole different feeling. Most of us are already used to the presence the Alien brings, we know it's coming but man, Fede upped the ante by making the Facehuggers legit terrifying as well. That corridor scene was TENSE.
@@dragonfx310 Corridor scene was pointless. Characters already showed that you can just slap them away. And one civilian with one pulse rifle is more dangerous than two automated turrets. So these aliens were comically weak.
It won't be everything, at least half of it will be cgi, and that's just fine. It's about the story, and i think this maybe a bit better than the previous films (prometheus and covenant) but that's a low bar.
I heard that Fede Alvarez played Alien: Isolation before making Romulus, I definitely believe it since Romulus station was very similar to Sevastopol in Isolation. And the fact that they used animatronics and practical effects is an awesome return to the roots of Alien.

David Johnson was fantastic, he was just as great as Micheal Fassbander playing David/Walter, so many layers of emotions and then the complete lack of it in the same character!
You did a great job Fede. The photographs, the actors, the classic elements, the fear. You have to give you a standing ovation and especially David Johnson.
David Jonsson (Andy) was so impressive the way he was able to switch personalities! He was the best part in my opinion. Only thing I didn't like is that they needed a cat to honor Jonesy!
The vents, the displays, the levers, the telephone, the stun baton... so many things to notice. And the station was similar to sevastopol, look at the labs. They did a very good job
Not only does the behind-the-scenes show practical but you SEE IT when watching the movie, in IMAX you see how intricate and well-made and REAL so much of it is. The sets are magnificent to look at, perfect industrial 70s aesthetic, the ship interiors especially, all the small little buttons and displays, they approached this the way the original production design artists did, not by sleek futuristic but the messy trucker industrial kit-bashing stuff. The aliens and face-huggers also look practical in so many close-up shots, its awesome, the opening scene of the colony too, it looks great because they shot that outside, with all the details of background extras doing their own stuff. I love love love the way this movie looks, many movies say they're practical but CGI over it, this movie did not, I mean all the rooms they enter look fucking real, not painted with CGI, the science lab omg there's so much detail to it. Makes it so fun for a rewatch. The prosthetics, makeup, practical effects for all the gore too, is awesome.
This has some real buzz going. There was NONE of this feeling when Covenant was about to drop. I think Fede and crew know they did something good here, and I hope this movie is worth all the hype it's been giving. From all that we've seen, it does look to be a pretty solid film! It's been a long, rough patch of crap movies, surely SOMEONE would be trying to come up with a handful of new tricks for the viewers. Maybe this is one of them.

The dedication to practical effects is awesome! Sometimes practical just gives you something that CG constructs can't. The Xeno itself is very impressive. Not to mention that it's much easier to be an actor in this kind of production.
I’ll admit Cailee’s look is a good choice for the lead! She gives off a look that feels similar to Ripley so seeing her you instantly know “this is an Alien film” while still coming off as this new unique character! I think she was a good choice!
Are you referring to the rehashed iconic lines they used from the older films? If so, I completely agree. I was like “oh come on!!” in my head when they did it numerous times throughout the film.
It was almost exclusively done in my home country Hungary in a big movie studio (there is quite a lot in Hungary now days, Dune was done here also Poor Things ) At the end of the film you see the names of the participants and about 2/3 of the name is hungarian... so we are proud of that...

Just saw this film couple hours ago. As a vfx artist, I appreciate how practical this film felt. The creatures felt very real and gross. And the sound design helped with that as well. I enjoyed this film!
Most critics would hardly appreciate this level of production. Is it shallow for me to love the movie just for its practical effects, sound effects, and anything else other than the writing and dialogue?
It was an outstanding film to watch. Loving this director, CGI should always be complimentary to practical effects, it's a tool like any other and should not be used for everything just because we can.
Saw the movie in theater last wekend with my 13yo daughter and we loved it. We didn't reacted that much at the jump scares but a 50yo man just besides me reacted very intensely to all of them and it was making me smile/laugh.
I watched the movie & liked the background story very much. Appreciate director brought back Aliens special effects prosthetic team. It's a fun experience. 😊 🎉❤

Glad they went with real sets and practical effects instead of full CGI. The movie was definitely more immersive, and the actors' interactions looked natural.
seen it twice already in theaters, probably would go see it again in Imax. The scene where they go stealthy is fun in the theater, whole room gets so quiet

Don't be. They're over dramatic without the solid emotion. The original crew put these guys to shame. It's the reason I won't be watching this movie The CAST are terrible for such a well known movie. Whoever is teaching them these days needs to lay of the dramatics. They never make any of the scenes believable 😂 Go back and watch the first movie & just go by the quality of acting. The movie kind of flatlines after that though. It was a good movie, just really disjointed.
The best part of the film for me was how well the world and atmosphere were created; you can really feel the oppression of this society.

The set design was excellent. I particularly loved how they used the Semiotic Standard symbols, and the Emergency save phones from Alien: Isolation
The director took a good amount of inspiration from isolation.

I have been a huge fan of Alien for 3 decades, and I really liked Romulus. It was fresh yet nostalgic, and the casting was fantastic. Felt good to me!

its a mix of practical efx, visual efx, and cgi. mosr sets are practical but maybe few are cgi.
