I especially really appreciated the first 20 minutes of character and world building.
The movie kind of flatlines after that though. It was a good movie, just really disjointed.
The best part of the film for me was how well the world and atmosphere were created; you can really feel the oppression of this society.
There is NO character building... its a bunch of teenagers.... getting a bad idea to loot haunted house.... :D and die in worst riddiculously way ever...
@@SimpleGuy795 I agree the characters were a little shallow. And I wanted more canon fodder for the aliens. But the motivations and world building was on point.
@@TheRedRaven_ Exactly. The first 15 mins was all good. original, new, refreshing and promising. And the design was awesome that they kept it from the original. I really liked that they did not improve the "tech". Then it turned into a "uuuh, I liked that, let's put that in, then let's put that scene of the other movie in, then we must put a scene or a something that was in other movies" Jesus.. If it would have been a standalone movie, or if someone who did not see anything before watching this, I'm sure this is a pretty ok movie. Not good tho. The characters and actors are still just bad and the plotholes won't go away. I like what Ridley started. It was more, it was deeper, more complex wasn't just about "let's survive somehow".. Then because the majority isn't qualified to enjoy the better, they simply didn't watch it. So it won't down the drain and disney, as usual.. Just ruined it.
I absolutely Loved Andy! The way David Jonsson flipped between Malfunctioning and malfunctioning was phenomenal. He deserves recognition for the role.
Ian Holm, Lance Henriksen, Michael Fassbender, and now David Jonsson. They have all killed it as "Artificial Persons."
I think he was the best actor in this film for sure.

At one point I thought it was possible CGI was being used to manipulate his facial expressions since they were so robotic-looking. Very impressive either way.

The amount of facehuggers in this film is both frightening and awesome.
Too bad the facehuggers in this movie aren't frightening.

Like where do they all come from? You never see the eggs and they were supporting be destroyed
Aliens stalking you is one thing, but a mass of Facehuggers chasing you is a whole different feeling. Most of us are already used to the presence the Alien brings, we know it's coming but man, Fede upped the ante by making the Facehuggers legit terrifying as well. That corridor scene was TENSE.
@@dragonfx310 Corridor scene was pointless. Characters already showed that you can just slap them away.
And one civilian with one pulse rifle is more dangerous than two automated turrets. So these aliens were comically weak.
The fact that everything looks to be practical solidified my faith in this film
Some of it looks clearly CGI though...
It won't be everything, at least half of it will be cgi, and that's just fine. It's about the story, and i think this maybe a bit better than the previous films (prometheus and covenant) but that's a low bar.
ALL the Alien movies were mostly practical sets and fx, what makes you think this movie is going to do anything different?

There is minimal cgi in the movie, everything is models and practical effects just like the original Alien!

I heard that Fede Alvarez played Alien: Isolation before making Romulus, I definitely believe it since Romulus station was very similar to Sevastopol in Isolation. And the fact that they used animatronics and practical effects is an awesome return to the roots of Alien.
There are a few nods towards Alien Isolation within Romulus for sure.
It was so cool to see the save stations from the game in the movie. And like the whole set aesthetics were super Alien:Isolation ish
The set design was excellent. I particularly loved how they used the Semiotic Standard symbols, and the Emergency save phones from Alien: Isolation
The director took a good amount of inspiration from isolation.
you can also see the pump action activating handles from Isolation too
It was almost like a love letter to the game.
Don't let this video distract you from the fact that THERE'S SOMEFIN IN THA FOOKIN' WOH'AH!

The level of these robotic aliens are INSANE!!
I didn't like the fact that they changed the design of the xenomorph like literally everything. The previous xenomorph from alien 1 2 3 4 was better!

The vents from Alien:Isolation got a smile from me.
The vents, the displays, the levers, the telephone, the stun baton... so many things to notice. And the station was similar to sevastopol, look at the labs. They did a very good job

4:33 yeah, actors love to know what they're actually working with instead of just staring and being surrounded by a bunch of green screens, i hope big corpos learn a lesson from this movie and start adopting more practical effects in movies again, please!
This has some real buzz going. There was NONE of this feeling when Covenant was about to drop. I think Fede and crew know they did something good here, and I hope this movie is worth all the hype it's been giving. From all that we've seen, it does look to be a pretty solid film! It's been a long, rough patch of crap movies, surely SOMEONE would be trying to come up with a handful of new tricks for the viewers. Maybe this is one of them.

David Jonsson (Andy) was so impressive the way he was able to switch personalities! He was the best part in my opinion. Only thing I didn't like is that they needed a cat to honor Jonesy!
The practical effects plus good cgi gives this movie just a perfect look. Amazing movie.
Not only does the behind-the-scenes show practical but you SEE IT when watching the movie, in IMAX you see how intricate and well-made and REAL so much of it is. The sets are magnificent to look at, perfect industrial 70s aesthetic, the ship interiors especially, all the small little buttons and displays, they approached this the way the original production design artists did, not by sleek futuristic but the messy trucker industrial kit-bashing stuff. The aliens and face-huggers also look practical in so many close-up shots, its awesome, the opening scene of the colony too, it looks great because they shot that outside, with all the details of background extras doing their own stuff. I love love love the way this movie looks, many movies say they're practical but CGI over it, this movie did not, I mean all the rooms they enter look fucking real, not painted with CGI, the science lab omg there's so much detail to it. Makes it so fun for a rewatch. The prosthetics, makeup, practical effects for all the gore too, is awesome.
You did a great job Fede. The photographs, the actors, the classic elements, the fear. You have to give you a standing ovation and especially David Johnson.
The practical effects in the movie are great. Also David Jonsson absolutely carried I will be watching his career

It was almost exclusively done in my home country Hungary in a big movie studio (there is quite a lot in Hungary now days, Dune was done here also Poor Things ) At the end of the film you see the names of the participants and about 2/3 of the name is hungarian... so we are proud of that...

@@budgiefriend Thanks... well one of the reason for big production to come here is that the cost still smaller and there is a system that gives back taxes to productions. And there are still good people here to work on the mechatronic side of the story...

@@VinylBabe Honestly I did not like it soo much except the mechatronic staff and the visuals of it ...that was great...the story and the characters and also the actors.... well not soo much, I am still spoiled with the first two film... which are both great and also the next two which are also not so bad... comparing them it was too much of a fan service... but that is only my view...
@@rockjano Yes, I understand your point of view, Alvarez really chose the safe nostalgia instead of innovations (of course, there was a couple of that also in the film), but at the same time, tha classic episodes only became cult status with passing time. If Alien and Aliens were made today, they too would be criticized and blamed for every little mistake.
I’ll admit Cailee’s look is a good choice for the lead! She gives off a look that feels similar to Ripley so seeing her you instantly know “this is an Alien film” while still coming off as this new unique character! I think she was a good choice!
Saw it yesterday. I really like it. Some quotes had me rolling my eyes, but overall a solid alien movie.
Are you referring to the rehashed iconic lines they used from the older films? If so, I completely agree. I was like “oh come on!!” in my head when they did it numerous times throughout the film.

It was an outstanding film to watch. Loving this director, CGI should always be complimentary to practical effects, it's a tool like any other and should not be used for everything just because we can.
Then they definitely should have taken out one particular element which used some of the worst CGI throughout the movie, which was a baffling choice

The dedication to practical effects is awesome! Sometimes practical just gives you something that CG constructs can't. The Xeno itself is very impressive. Not to mention that it's much easier to be an actor in this kind of production.

Just saw this film couple hours ago. As a vfx artist, I appreciate how practical this film felt. The creatures felt very real and gross. And the sound design helped with that as well. I enjoyed this film!

I loved every second of this movie!
Saw the movie in theater last wekend with my 13yo daughter and we loved it. We didn't reacted that much at the jump scares but a 50yo man just besides me reacted very intensely to all of them and it was making me smile/laugh.

Glad they went with real sets and practical effects instead of full CGI. The movie was definitely more immersive, and the actors' interactions looked natural.

You look at "The Thing", "Alien", "Aliens", "Terminator 2", "Predator" and many other iconic movies from "back then" and if you compare these movies with the newer ones from the same franchises, the comparison will not be in favor of the latest movies.
You clearly completely misunderstood her point. Aliens and Predator and The Thing were made on a shoestring budgets in comparison to modern blockbusters. The filmmakers were good enough to shoot and edit and do jury-rigged fx tricks to make them look like the films had a bigger budget than they actually did. The tools and techniques are not same either. You had to wait hours sometimes days to see the footage you shot to see if it was actually useable much less good. It took longer to machine parts for practical effects for last minute changes. Digital editing vastly changed the editing process from the cumbersome moviola. Just some small examples. Try to use your brain and not be such an anime pfp reactionary next time over obvious facts.

ALEC GILLIS worked on the ALIEN Saga for ALIENS (1986) and for ALIEN 3 ( 1992 )
Alec Gillis worked on Resurrection and the AvPs as well as Aliens and Alien 3.

My concern with hollywood sequel in years past and even today, if you dont get it, is how they like to cast and incorporate younger actors on established franchises, there are so many examples... Hello.Ghostbusters, etc, even with Predator... and most of this are misses.. Hopefully this one is good... we havent had a good Alien movie.since what, 1986 lol..

The CAST are terrible for such a well known movie. Whoever is teaching them these days needs to lay of the dramatics. They never make any of the scenes believable 😂

seen it twice already in theaters, probably would go see it again in Imax. The scene where they go stealthy is fun in the theater, whole room gets so quiet

They decide to go something different instead of being the same as the 1987 one as that no has that Kevin Peter Hall body type after he the first 2 Predator films Some of them say that would look goofy in a future Predator film.
Look the best we’ve had since Alien 3
The original had just enough vaguely human features to spark the uncanny valley effect. That was a hallmark of Giger's art and something that subsequent alien designs haven't paid enough attention to, imo.

Having younger characters in this case is essential to the movies themes, it isn't just some mindless corporate decision to pander to young people or something.

Well, we will see how many CG Facehuggers are in the movie- But I had to laugh at the facehugger at 3:38 just jumping at the actor back first because the string was caught up in the BG. Looks to be a pretty interesting Alien film though. Less CGI more set is always a +

i see a lot of comments shitting on cgi and vfx as a whole and it shows how little y'all know about how films are made and what is vfx and what is practical special effects. you would be surprised how much of the practical effects are actually replaced by cgi in post production because these studios making these films decide they don't like the way they look.
