I appreciate this tutorial btw. I worked for Sailrite years ago and was fired on day one by the woman in charge because she didn't like my attitude. Ironically She had a really bad attitude.
I thought, My Gosh there is no way I could sit through 2 hrs of this... But I was glued to it!! best tutorial ever!! thank you and you gained a new sub for sure!
Haha, I know, two hours can seem like a lifetime! But I'm thrilled to hear that you were glued to the tutorial and found it valuable. Thank you for subscribing, I promise not to make all my videos that long!
@SailriteDIY nah, I ordered some waxed canvas. I got a feeling I will be watching it again! Lol. My mom sewed and won county fairs and state fair entries with quilts in the 80's. I recently started doing leather and that led to packs and bags for christmas presents this year for my kids and grands. I never sat and sewed with her, but I cant believe the things I have recalled while getting into it. My first bag a lined haversack, my wife said, "how did you line it".. I was like, sew it inside out silly! But your vid provided a lot of simple but very detailed instruction and tips. Thankyou!
I enjoyed this video so much I’m watching it for the 2nd time.
Wow, I am an amature sewer, but would love to give this a try!!!! Love the green color with straps.
You can do it!!!
Finally! Looks awesome. Great gift idea too.
Edit: chop sticks work great for pushing out the corners.
Thanks for the tip!
Wonderful. What a great tutorial, very detailed.
Thank you! Cheers!
These tutorials are gold! Thanks
Wow, we appreciate your kind comment!
Just completed this backpack, very very nice. I was having some withdrawal symptoms…..the entire project….. no basting tape! (I did sneak some in but I won’t say where)
Congratulations on completing your waxed canvas backpack! I hope it looks great!
You guys are faster than Amazon these days! I decided to try different stains on scraps of leather before committing and needed to order some additional stains. I ordered Friday afternoon and it is arriving today! (Monday). Great work!
Thank you so much for your kind words! We strive to provide the best service and fast delivery to all our customers. We're glad to hear that you had a great experience with us!
Hey, I want this foot for my LS1. I like how you can SEE what you are doing. is that going to happen?@@SailriteDIY
I’d love to visit this store. I’m planning on getting the tool bag kit and make it for my son for ‘23 Christmas.. love this channel
Yes, those would make great Christmas gifts. Something that you hand made for someone you love brings much more appreciation than a store bought item.
That drill tip is so clever!
Yes, it is called the Sailrite Drill Hole Cutter.
Always love your tutorials; and this kit is a great idea. I do hobby leatherwork but have to sew everything by hand, so do mostly small stuff. I'm trying to save enough money so I can get one of those LS machines, they're great! Then I can try one of those kits. Keep up the great ideas and videos.
Thanks! You will love your new Sailrite Ultrafeed LS Sewing Machine when you finally get one.
I was the same way before I bought mine almost 15 years ago now. Man, that machine is a workhorse! You will find so many projects that you never thought about once you have it.
Will a regular sewing machine work too? If so, how do I use the giant spool of thread with my machine?
thank you for this video.
Oh I yelled “owww” so many times at the end too. Made me laugh, I’m sorry you did too! Damn pins……
Oh and chucking the rivet hole punch into a cordless drill for the strap snaps and for the final rivets is the best idea I have seen in a while. No need to hammer and make noise and swear when it’s crooked. I love these videos.
Looks like we both had a rough time with those pins! Maybe we should start a "Pins Anonymous" support group.
Can you make this with the fabricator? Or just the ls! Or the red one but great video I got my mind set on the fabricator
Yes, the Sailrite® Fabricator® Sewing Machine will make this project even easier than the LS. Go for it!!!!
That is totally awesome 😊
Than you but the certain kits for the fanricator
+1 .. Luv the kit idea. ... Vail, Colorado
Excellent! Thanks.

At 7:48, a 1” puddy knife with a sharpened edge will work just as good as a japanese leather sewing knife if your on a budget.
Great suggestion. Thanks!!!
If you do not want a distressed look to your waxed canvas (eg, from a presser foot) iron the canvas after distressing. It will redistribute the wax and make it look fresh
Thanks for the tip! A hair dryer can also help with that.
The link for just the pattern doesn't seem to be working.
What needles did you use? Did you use a DI needle when sewing through the leather and switch to a round point sewing just fabric?
We used a standard #20 size needle (Schmetz #20 Sewing Machine Needles 135x17 Round/Sharp Point) for the whole process, even when sewing through the leather. However, a DI needle may have been beneficial when sewing leather, as it cuts a hole rather than punches a hole in the leather.
Thank you.😊 But the link to - waxed backpack pattern (without the kit) - is a broken link. So I cannot order the pattern alone. When I tried searching the site for it, there isn't one.
Sorry about that. We will have that fixed very soon. Check back later today.
very good, but I think it would be better to use brass fittings from military garments
Thats what is great about DIY, you can make any changes you like.
If u really want to sell a load of kits you should clone the classic danish school bag. I bought mine in the 80s, still use it but more patches tgan bag.
I will look into that danish school bag, thanks for the suggestion.
What material did you use for the stiffner?
Hi Nicole,
We used a plastic template material, you can find the link below.
www.sailrite.com/Template-Plastic-Plain-A4-2-pack
Sure wish they were available, I’d buy one tonight
without the step by steps I have watched this video a lot. I have two liner pieces that I never saw in the video. 7A and 8B
can you provide the URL to the step by steps?
Yes, here is a link to the steps: STEPS PDF: www.sailrite.com/PDF/Waxed_Canvas_Backpack_Kit.pdf
@@SailriteDIY thank you! I am embroidering my two kits to personalize for the grandsons. I'll share pics when I am done! and I found those two pieces in the end steps. I am excited and nervous to start.
Considering what the full kit costs, one shouldn't have to print the instructions themselves, they should come with the kit. They don't have to fancy or in color. Just print high quality b/w, and have Kinko's or Office Depot make copies from that high quality print. Their copiers can even automatically staple them.
May want to take "frist" out of the spell checker dictionary? Thanks for the info.
if it's off, its your own fault.

Ah, the classic one-word comment. Short and to the point, just like your comment!
Must have nails trimmed
No time to trim nails, I got sewing that must be done.
