My motto when designing new product is to “fail fast”. Which means don’t worry about getting it perfect the first time. Sometimes I can get half way through a project and know it isn’t going to work, but I continue on quickly. I can still learn a lot, weather it is sewing process or the fit and feel of the product. When I finish each prototype I make a list of corrections and highlight the ideas that worked and those that didn’t.
Keep up the hard work.
It's very cool when guys show that they don't get everything right the first time :) Thank you for that!
I love what you guys are doing. Always wanted to myself but lacked the time. I always knew the skills could be learned and I'm glad to see packs returning to the canvas and leather of my youth. I didn't see a nylon bag until college and have an assortment of traditional military bags that I use for hiking, etc. good on ya. Nothing like the real materials.
II love your pattern weights 😂❤
use 1 --2 oz leather cut to 3/4 on the seams works for me when i make canvas bags
I love that you added the side access zip.. that's a crucial feature I have been looking for and not finding
I really appreciate your videos and enjoy seeing your process. everything you share is informative and NEVER boring!
That’s so nice Susie thank you!
Loved this video. I want to make a roll top backpack myself. I love the idea of the side pocket, but I think I would either add another zipper or a small ring (like an o or d ring) so I can secure the zip when not in use. There are way too many people on the street who would unzip it while you stand waiting for a crosswalk light or on the bus. I'd also (for security reasons) add a zippered pocket in the back against my back to put my wallet in. I really love that you showed what worked and what didn't.. and why. Thanks for making the video!
Dude. Incredibly tight video. That editing was perfect. Just the right balance between cutting out the breaths but not over doing it. All information was there without dragging at all.
A good honest video. Like having a trusted friend in the business.
Thank you Paul, that means a lot
Very nice. You can also add the pockets at the back side but I love it
This is the reality of making bags, lol I’m so comforted knowing that I’m not the only one going through these struggles before I can finally get it right. Thanks guys 🙏
Great video Parker! It's nice to see I'm not the only one that has struggled with those darn binding attachments. I ended up making a bracket for mine that attached to somewhere other than the slide plate. You'll be surprised how well those raw edges hold up. Waxed canvas does not fray like other woven textiles. I have waxed canvas projects I made years ago, use every day, and have had no fraying. Admittedly it does look cleaner with binding. An alternative to binding would be sewing a French seam. You would sew your bag twice; once with wrong sides together and a narrow seam allowance; then you would turn it and sew with right sides together, using a seam allowance larger than the first.
My go to place for waxed canvas has been Fairfield Textiles. They have a plethora of options and their costume service is great.
Very cool bag! I bought one from Chrome that has a very similar design, I too like the zipper for "quick grab" items, my solve was a small pencil bag just inside the side zipper. In the end it was not as easy as it would be from the exterior but the bag has lasted me over 10 years because of the minimal exterior design. Keep up the great work! Congrats on your "new" full-time role with your father at Buscadero.
it's actually looks really nice, keep up with the design!
Hello, great bag.
I have two ideas on how you can finish the seams, since you are dealingwith fabricand not leather: 1st you can use French seams, this is when you sew the seams from the right side of the fabric (wrong side together) about 1/4 inch seams and them you turn the bag outside in and you sew again about 3/8 to 1/2 inch seam encasing the first seam, this will secure the seams and avoid fraying of the fabric.
Second choice will be to use water proof canvas for the strips of binding, this is the favorite choice for bag making to finishthe inside seams, it doesn't frayed and you can cut the strips any width you want.
I hope this will help you with this bad finishings 😊.
I have a few tips. I haven’t seen newer videos so you may have done this, but invest in a domestic sewing machine. They are perfect for small repairs. They also have a bunch of different feet so that binding issue you were having could be pretty easily handled. When it comes to those spots that didn’t get caught, just hand sew them.
I love thé bag. Thanks for sharing the process.
Nice bag! If I may, one way to avoid dealing with binding the interior seams on a bag like this is to install a "floating" liner - basically an inside-out version of the bag "shell," sewn to the shell around the mouth of the bag. You can leave it loose, or sew the bottom seam allowances to each other for a more secure liner. Since all of the seam allowances are trapped between the shell and the liner, no binding needed!
Also, 10.10 oz. canvas might be a little too light and thin. #10 is about 15 oz., I love that weight for backpacks and similar bags. 10.10 oz is nice for a lighter weight and feel, but for me it doesn't have the same rugged quality I'm looking for from waxed canvas.
Thanks for sharing your process, and keep up the great work!
What would you say about hand stitching a bag like this with a 15oz canvas? Would the folds be too thick and unwieldy?
It was great to meet you and your family this past weekend. Thanks for another great video.
Jesse! It was a huge pleasure to meet you and your fam. Thanks for saying hi!
I've been doing a lot more waxed canvas/leather combos recently too - it's a lot of fun. They go together really well. Tote bags are a good place to start because they're easier. Excited to test out a roll-top bag soon!
Looks like an apathetic green pillow with leather straps! 👌
Beautiful bag regardless. I love the fact you showed us the flaws of wax canvas. Almost wanted to buy some.
thanks for your video and tips !!! it was so good that you had lots of links that you can come in and buy material
I use an 18 - 20 oz. waxed canvas for my bags, It'll soften up after use and won't seem as heavy. I think the lighter stuff is nice looking, new, but doesn't wear as well, over time.
For my bags that use a bunch of layers I use the 5/8 line for seam allowance. It seams like a lot, but I rarely miss any layers. For me I always sew on the strap triangles to one piece (outside the seam allowance) before doing the final seam. That way it doesn't move, and you know you'll catch it in the seam.
idea of canvas projects seems exciting
My head is totally in this world and a lot of your assumptions/plans were similar to my own. Great conclusions on many of these issues. Thanks!
Glad to hear that Luke, thank you!
Love the thread exchange, I use the kevlar 210 and Nomex
awesome! they're great
That looks great!!!
Binding is a pain. I work with 16 oz waxed canvas pretty exclusively and have found that pre-running 1/2” basting tape down the roll of 7/8” grosgrain will hold onto the canvas enough to get to the sewing machine. Bonus is it helps seal the stitch along with the wax…still tediously has to be added by hand but ends up with a straighter binding. Serger is definitely my next investment. Have never tried the attachments but it’s good to see they may be a waste of time anyway. Thanks
I use 12 ounce treated WR canvas and it is easy to work with. Durafin also works but is a bit stiff and has an old tent odor. I think tan 12oz Sunforger would work pretty good, but 10 ounce seems a bit light.
That front zipper on the lower 1/3 could have have a flap over it so it is hidden. But the bag looks good. Has a nice design with the side zipper. 👍👍👍
Good idea. Would also be helpful for Water protection
Dude..iron the binding first then slide the canvas in. Like make the bend you want, then iron it, so the crease is already made, then slide the canvas edge into the fold.😊
Instead of binding the inside, you can zigzag those seams to prevent unraveling. It turned out great & love that you share your struggles along with your wins!
thanks Rebekah! I don't have a zig zag machine, but that's a great idea. Most industrial leather machines are straight stitch only
Really amazing experience
have you considered a double fold bias tape for binding those inside seams? it's a light cotton but will neaten up your seams quite a bit. and with it being double fold you open the tape, sew it in place on one side, then flip it closed over the seam and go over it once more. yeah it sucks to have to go over the seams twice, but the look of the finish is worth it for me. really enjoyed your video, thanks, and I am thankful for your honesty when things didn't go right.
I love the idea of a leather one with denim interior.
make it!
wow that was an awesome video, so much information, thank you for sharing
Love this design, Park!
Thats so classic: Dad Pops in for something he needs...starts dealing with the kids stuff to help.... 😎
#Starmanmusic
wow that looks awesome! any chance you will be putting the pattern up????
Another great video!!! Thank you for sharing.
I have been making waxed canvas bags for years. You can use double sided tape from Sailrite the tape I use is Saemstick 3/8 Basting tape for canvas works very good. Also use Gorilla Super Glue this is your best friend when making waxed canvas bags. You can make binding out of the canvas you use for the bag and use the super glue and glue the binding on the bag then sew up the bag. Hope this helps.
Interesting project. Sailrite makes great bindings for heavy duty projects.
Thanks Patty
very cool bag! maybe you can use French seams instead of binding and put the little zipper pocket on the back so the front keeps the simple look
I love working with canvas and leather,
sweet project,
just some thoughts, You can buy a cheap "vinyl cutter" or plotter from US Cutter
Also you can hand stitch binding on your "flat" machine. I actually rarely use my binding set in our custom upholstery shop now. You sew your first line along the outside like any other seam, 2nd run you flip the binding to the inside and run the needle down the edge of your binding from the top.
If that made sense lol
If gives you a seamless binding, but more importantly it gives you a folded edge so risk of fraying is eliminated.
16oz canvas... 100% cotton or a synthetic blend? 💖🌞🌵😷
AWESOME!! Can you convert it somehow that you can use it as a Bicycle Bag?
Thanks for show&tell!
Pretty freaking impressive 🤘🤘
I found it beautifully made ✌
I really love that you added a zipper. Dealing with that buckle every time would get frustrating. Even on my bags I find that a regular buckle or G hook gets old when you're in and out of your bag a lot. The zipper really helps. The front pocket zipper does add a lot of work to a bag. I think It would be fine if you left it out. The side zipper makes it easy to get into the bag to grab stuff. People always ask me "why can't you just add a few zipper pockets, and an inside organizer." It's because it makes the bags super complex, and zippers are not easy to do quickly. Adding 2 zippers would easily double the production time for a bag for me. I always think simpler is better. In the long run the zippers are going to be the first thing that fails, and I want my products to last a lifetime, and maybe be multi-generational.
That said, what's the point of a roll top bag if you are going to use the zipper for access? The design of his bag IMO was flawed from the start in that roll top bags are really for water proof carriers. So the lining should be a heat sealed vinyl and some lightweight outer covering. Also a buckle connection sewn to the mouth is faster than a vertical strap.
I've never seen this guys videos before so IDK if this is a fashion oriented business in which case it makes sense why he did what he did.
I really love this bag! You were the first person to really inspire me :)
I am now working on getting all supplies to start making leather goods here in Germany, it is really hard to find suppliers though (and of course I am turning to tandy leathers EU side because of you!)
I have bought a 60€ veg tanned leather side and have done multiple card wallets, small bags and cases for different items. I am hoping to turn this into a way to support myself. Funny enough, my biggest problem is finding a name! :D
Thank you for showing me something I am really passionate about!
@kittieconvoy thank you, I will check hin out!!
I made the exact same mistake of not leaving enough fabric on the top for a proper roll top on my trial run of a canvas backpack. I’ve been meaning to do another with waxed canvas but always held off because of the price of materials but after watching this I think I might just 😁
Looks great brother! Ill be making a similar one soon :) Working on my skillllss
Where could we find this pattern??
Awesome video and thank you for answering some questions I had
Omg I need this! Its amazing!
Thank you very much for experimenting with waxed canvas too. It was a very insightful vid. Yep, most canvas bags are using 10oz. For inspiration I recommend to look into Trakke, Waterfield Design and Wotancraft. Their designs are really cool, with a lot of great ideas.
Beside waxed canvas, oilcloth is also an interesting fabric, altough I don't know how it behaves or where to get it in good quality. But it sure looks dope. Ripstop waxed canvas is also very beautiful, although quite pricey.
I think it looks bad ass. What's it weigh? I like those leather tabs for strapping things to the bag. For the purposes of functionality, I'd put a pair of them on the top and/or bottom for a rolled up ground cloth. Great for day trips, concerts etc.
Love your work
9:30 If you warm up the waxed canvas with a heat gun or hair dryer it gets momentarily softer to turn the bag inside out. Try it
For zipper pulls I use a little wider leather and make a blood knot.
Love the videos and inspiration! Where would one learn these skills or better yet how did you get into this and how would one learn?
You could look d use the school glue in a stick or tube to hold down as they do in quilting.
For me, once you put the zipper on the side, the roll top became decorative. I’d always use the convenient side zipper rather than unbuckling and unrolling the top.
This is beautiful.....am also trying to make leather canvas combo tote bag.
Try water proof canvas for the binding.
Great work, you can put the front zipper hidden or covered
Your work is absolutely beautiful and that green bag turned out to look amazing. I do like the metal zippers.
I also make leather bags and sandals in Mexico 🇲🇽 and really looking forward to start working with waxed canvas …love the heritage simplicity of that bag!
Where do you buy your waxed canvas? Imposible to find in Mexico … thanks dude !
Thank you 👍💥
Bro. Brooks england used to make what this project is and it retails for over 200. You would kill it to bring this to the cycling market.
Where can I buy the pattern for this online?
Can wait for the Duffle bag get made !!!!
very nice, good luck
What program do you draw patterns from?
I will be glad if you write.
Great video. Where do you get the measuring grid table top cover thingy?
Looking awesome
Great Details thanks
Seam binding with your sewing machine instead of tape?
Those weights!! Where can I get those weghts?!
How can I buy this pattern?
thanks very much! very helpful
Good one! Looks very cool
what is the best weight for a jacket/coat I think you did quite well, try again?
Is it possible to handstitch duck canvas? I don't have a sewing machine 😭
It absolutely is, just not as convenient as a machine. It really is a more modern thing of everything having to be machine sewn.
Yes, i never did but you will probably have to punch it with a picking iron, just like leather, it's way too tough to be pierced with a needle.
And a bag like these will take you days to sew.
@@fabiobeck3682 for me it would take weeks i suppose 🤣
Really nice work park. Could you please some of your patterns please? At least some of the ones you dont sell.
Love the colors you chose to make the bag, what is the model of the Juki flatbed you used?
If you don't have the correct size binding for the attachment it'll never work correctly. You can get the correct stuff, or just do the binding by hand. Its more difficult, but turns out better than having it wobble the whole time. The attachments do work better when the holes are attached straight to the machine. I would get the swinging binding attachment from sailrite.com That one lets you do corners, and backstitch easier. Sailrite also sells good waxed canvas too.
Nice press
Just came across this video.
Just some heads up-->
"waxed" canvas never sticks to tape.
If you want binding for this kind of canvas (in the future), skive down leather or use thin leather about 1 oz.
Work the full pattern out using heavy craft paper and some tape to hold together. Then when you have tweaked the design, build it in leather or canvas. For waxed canvas, go lighter. For leather use 5-6 oz upholstery or milled veg.
Sorry to see you struggling with this 😔. But trust with just a few adjustments you can make it happen. 🤗
Hey! I also wanted to create the same bag but I can not find instruction patterns for the bag as you did in your web. I would have liked to have master instruction.
Looks good 👍. Thanks 😊!!
Hi i have a cowboy cb3200…
What does the binding attachment look like and how do i get one for my cylinder arm machine??
Doesn’t matter how old we get. Call dad for his help is always on the table!
Try a canvas flap over front zipper or rustic zipper
Hi - I am wondering if you have got some advice on an issue I am having. I am making a bag out of 16oz waxed canvas. I want to attached a leather label to it. Similiar to your leather you have attached. When I attach the leather with rivets, after some time days, there are bleed marks that start in the shape of the rivets that get larger and larger. Discoulouring the leather label. Do you know a solution?? I am thinking it is the wax seeping on the the leather thru the penetration holes.
I wonder if French seam will work to enclose the raw edges inside
I made a bag very similar to this and that's what I did. It took some thinking though when to add the corner pieces for the strap buckles. Lol
HIde the zipper with a 1/2 inch flap
how about another zipper on the other side for small accessories. that way you keep the simple look
Is this bag a pattern we can purchase?
