Are we going to talk about how brilliant the writers are about the little details? McKay mentions that the radius of the gate is in correlation to its power requirements. The Mk1 gates (SGU) are slightly _smaller_ than any of the counterparts, because they weren't designed to handle the same amount of power in its capacitors as the Mk2 and 3. The attention to continuity in this show sometimes just blows my mind
i totally agree about the continuity, but i don't think this particular example was intentional- iirc it was actually a design thing since the gate initially couldn't fit in the room. but its still nice head canon lol

I just noticed something about their seating positions. They did not sit opposite each other, as in SG1 on one side and the Atlantis team on the other. Instead, they mixed it up, sitting alternating, with Weir at the centre since she is the chairperson of the meeting. Very good way to have a sense of unity and also for both teams to interact closely with each other in the crossover episode.
Yeah, I use this mixing trick whenever I setup a meeting where I really want people to work together and not against each other. And it works. This tells you how primitive we are, if simple proximity and body posture dictates our thinking.
I really really love how everyone else are just smiling at Mckay as he argues. Just shows how these guys are Veterens of the Stargate Program. They are so used to all these stuff.

let's not forget... Rodney did work at the SGC before the Atlantis expedition...( and before Hammond/the IOA- I forget which - "loaned" him to the Russians for a few years) Sam and Daniel are very familiar with him. especially Sam.
A little shy of 3 minutes of extremely entertaining discussion. The character development they had done with this characters up until this point allows them to make a scene like this that's allllllll technical babble, yet still be MASSIVELY entertaining.
Rodney was so perfectly executed as a character. He went from an annoying ego centric twerp to a loveable annoying ego centric twerp that became front and centre of the Atlantis.
So on Stargate you've got recurring if not regular characters from Star Trek Enterprise, Star Trek Voyager, Firefly, and Farscape. Sounds like heaven to me.

McKay is like a child going on a field trip. When he's begging for McDonalds and you say no, but deep down you know you want it too. So you say no, but after the 3rd "please...please..please" you say yes just to shut him up. Don't feed into his ego just give him enough slack to feel like a part of the conversation.
Back when they were still going to do an Atlantis movie, I was kind of hoping the followup would be a crossover movie. It would have been great to see both teams interacting extensively as opposed to just briefly
I like this scene for many reasons, both within the SG universe and in general with the writing and characters. But I also like seeing that you can have Mitchell and Shepard, two very similar characters, still get to show themselves as individuals. The rare times we see them together are good, if subtle at times. Similar to Ronon and Teal'c, for example.

The Ronon/Teal'c collaboration episode was absolutely EPIC! I love how they were able to take on and defend against the Wraith at Midway Station, and then go on to SGC and defend the base and clear out the Wraith there too!! Such a great episode! One of my most favorites!!
I feel bad for Rodney, sure he's annoying but he's a genius, saving the day countless times. Succeeding under pressure is a trait not very many have, and he excels at it.
remember the episode in SG1 where even McKay had to acknowledge that while he's a genius, he's not a natural and Carter is his superior when it comes to science.
That is SUCH a cool scene! It's so long since I watched SG-1 and I only recently got off may ass and bought (and started and finished) SGA. I'd never tried to envisage how the two teams would interact. I'm surprised how different Mitchell and Sheppard are (I'd always thought they were cut from the same mold but now I'm thinking a little differently). Much as I like Mitchell, he was super unprofessional here. Rodney was expressing concern with a plan he doesn't know the entire details with, going over things he feels need to be said that haven't been addressed yet. Instead of simply telling Rodney they've done all those things and not to worry, he gets all shitty with him, as well as portraying annoyance at him being involved, like come on the dudes just making sure everything goes smoothly.

You can really see McKay's growth as a character comparing this scene to the much later one when he's explaining the "plan" to destroy the replicators to O'neill and Woolsey
One weird thing is that Carter had already been to Atlantis TWICE before assuming leadership of the Atlantis Expedition (season 4), yet she didn't seem to remember it. Shepard too, since he welcomed her to Atlantis as if she had never been there before.

This is why Sheppard should've had more interaction with SG-1. McKay was already established with SG-1 and Weir was at one point running the SGC. These are the premier people of the SGC for the most part. Sheppard should have made another appearance or two at the SGC. I hope if they make another Stargate that he's part of it even in a guest capacity.

I have seen this episode many times, but this is my first time piecing this together. So when the black hole connection was going to destroy earth and they used the shape charge, does that mean that some other, possibly inhabited world got destroyed?
Damian No. McKay was overbearing at times but they overdid it with there reaction to him. The shoot him line was a bit much. I also thought Mitchell was a bad fit for the dynamic of the team. He was annoying.
The problem with McKay's character is that he was portrayed in slightly different way in SG1 in the earlier seasons and on Atlantis itself... So when they made this crossover, it kind of clashed...
Yea like Richard Dean Anderson's humor wasn't a bit too much in some really tense and serious moments. It honestly just ruined some of the more serious moments in the show. At least with the Ori Cameron and Daniel to make jokes but they also have a valid point and besides Cameron + Vala brought some much needed diversity and new perspective in the show.
I agree. At this point in time I think Atlantis was in season 3 while SG-1 was in season 10. Rodney was still an ass but he had mellowed a little. This reminds me more of his SG-1/early Atlantis arrogance.
Agreed, it's the only thing that makes me not enjoy this crossover as much as i would like. Sheppard is a little out of character and he seems like he's just trying to look cool with Mitchell, who acts like a dick (more than usual)

They all really do like Rodney but with his ego they will never miss a chance to take him down a peg and let some of the air out of his head. :)

They turned McKay into a joke for a long time to make SG1 appear smarter and better instead of them being smart and good on their own. This continued even here. Despite all this, McKay had a terrific actor and he redeemed the character very well in Atlantis and made him a fan favorite.
So I know rhis is an SG-1 episode, but where does this fit in with the SGA timeline? Season 2? Their uniforms looks like season 1 but the atlantis expedition having contact with earth and stargate command like this at all seems like too big of an event for nobody to mention it in season 1
You know looking back... They were all arseholes to McKay. He just wanted to make sure all they had all the necessary parts to make this plan work. You can really see when the series started to try and be more 'mainstream', with making sure you knew to root for 'cool soldier McCool-man', and that they too hated to dumb nerds/geeks. Carter got a pass because she was also a combatant. Also, where are Tayla and Ronan, they'd also miss the dog reference and likewise want it cleared up; I suppose that would detract from the 'everyone hates McKay' shtick.
If the ship was small enough to fit through the smaller diameter of the receiving gate, it'd probably work. Though if they sent a ship too large, presumably the gate cant send it through and it simply fails to materialize, either that or the supergates have safety protocols preventing such a thing which is highly unlikely seeing as its possible for them to even dial smaller gates.
Sheppard & Mitchell should have had more crossover. When Sheppard & Ronan Dex came to Earth to search for McKay's sister... Mitchell should have worked with them.
Likely because Mitchell had rank or Carter didn't want to lead. Also to try and keep the situation somewhat familier with four team members from a TV point of view. However Mitchell is much like O'neil, in that he will let others "lead" when the situation demands, so it is more likely that he simply had a higher rank, O'neil knew he'd do what Carter and Daniel said and that Mitchell would be open to ideas and not let his leadership position go to his head.
If I remember correctly, she quit SG1 temporarily (along with Teal'c and Daniel) and Mitchell reformed it. So that means Mitchell was there first. The military loves its technicalities so it makes sense.

how many times did the writers of this show use the black hole planet as the plan to save the day? Or at least how many times is that episode referenced in other episodes? Too many.
I mean, they usually put in that kind of stuff both to maintain continuity and to briefly loop in new viewers at the time who hadn't watched from the beginning.
Since 2 gates cant be active in nearby locations at the same time, I bet they wouldnt even need to make the wormhole jump to the super gate. Just like the replicator satellite that attacked Atlantis and the wraith hive that attacked earth

This is why Sheppard should've had more interaction with SG-1. McKay was already established with SG-1 and Weir was at one point running the SGC. These are the premier people of the SGC for the most part. Sheppard should have made another appearance or two at the SGC. I hope if they make another Stargate that he's part of it even in a guest capacity.
I love relationship between Elizabeth, John and Rodney. Sometimes she's like their mom or she's a mom, John is a dad and Rodney is Rodney so he needs to be smacked)))

Damian No. McKay was overbearing at times but they overdid it with there reaction to him. The shoot him line was a bit much. I also thought Mitchell was a bad fit for the dynamic of the team. He was annoying.
The problem with McKay's character is that he was portrayed in slightly different way in SG1 in the earlier seasons and on Atlantis itself... So when they made this crossover, it kind of clashed...
Yea like Richard Dean Anderson's humor wasn't a bit too much in some really tense and serious moments. It honestly just ruined some of the more serious moments in the show. At least with the Ori Cameron and Daniel to make jokes but they also have a valid point and besides Cameron + Vala brought some much needed diversity and new perspective in the show.
I agree. At this point in time I think Atlantis was in season 3 while SG-1 was in season 10. Rodney was still an ass but he had mellowed a little. This reminds me more of his SG-1/early Atlantis arrogance.

Agreed, it's the only thing that makes me not enjoy this crossover as much as i would like. Sheppard is a little out of character and he seems like he's just trying to look cool with Mitchell, who acts like a dick (more than usual)
@@ZzMattizZ He's trying to "outcool", yes, but picking on Rodney is pretty much the national sport of Atlantis, and one of the things that is made clear on that show is that it's done out of love. They all really do like Rodney but with his ego they will never miss a chance to take him down a peg and let some of the air out of his head. :)

They turned McKay into a joke for a long time to make SG1 appear smarter and better instead of them being smart and good on their own. This continued even here. Despite all this, McKay had a terrific actor and he redeemed the character very well in Atlantis and made him a fan favorite.
So I know rhis is an SG-1 episode, but where does this fit in with the SGA timeline? Season 2? Their uniforms looks like season 1 but the atlantis expedition having contact with earth and stargate command like this at all seems like too big of an event for nobody to mention it in season 1

They were all arseholes to McKay. He just wanted to make sure all they had all the necessary parts to make this plan work.
You can really see when the series started to try and be more 'mainstream', with making sure you knew to root for 'cool soldier McCool-man', and that they too hated to dumb nerds/geeks. Carter got a pass because she was also a combatant.
Also, where are Tayla and Ronan, they'd also miss the dog reference and likewise want it cleared up; I suppose that would detract from the 'everyone hates McKay' shtick.
Sam has to work and John gets a sorta vacation!

I'm wondering what would happen if they sent a ship through the ori supergate and it came out the regular Stargate in the Pegasus galaxy
If the ship was small enough to fit through the smaller diameter of the receiving gate, it'd probably work. Though if they sent a ship too large, presumably the gate cant send it through and it simply fails to materialize, either that or the supergates have safety protocols preventing such a thing which is highly unlikely seeing as its possible for them to even dial smaller gates.

Why isn't Carter leading the damn team. She has a hell of alot more battle experience through the gate than Mitchell did.
Likely because Mitchell had rank or Carter didn't want to lead. Also to try and keep the situation somewhat familier with four team members from a TV point of view. However Mitchell is much like O'neil, in that he will let others "lead" when the situation demands, so it is more likely that he simply had a higher rank, O'neil knew he'd do what Carter and Daniel said and that Mitchell would be open to ideas and not let his leadership position go to his head.
If I remember correctly, she quit SG1 temporarily (along with Teal'c and Daniel) and Mitchell reformed it. So that means Mitchell was there first. The military loves its technicalities so it makes sense.
Poor Rodney! He too so much undeserved crap just because he knew his stuff. And because he was clueless of appropriateness. That too.

how many times did the writers of this show use the black hole planet as the plan to save the day? Or at least how many times is that episode referenced in other episodes? Too many.
I mean, they usually put in that kind of stuff both to maintain continuity and to briefly loop in new viewers at the time who hadn't watched from the beginning.

Since 2 gates cant be active in nearby locations at the same time, I bet they wouldnt even need to make the wormhole jump to the super gate. Just like the replicator satellite that attacked Atlantis and the wraith hive that attacked earth
