I'm with Rebecca on the usefulness of containers. As an older person I find I can no longer get down on the floor to look for items on the back of lower shelves. (or high ones, if truth be told) With containers, or trays, I can pull the whole unit out like a drawer and find what I need.
    You go girl!

Same here, I have everything in containers and lazy Susan’s now, keeps everything tidy, like with like and so easy to access. I also now have my juicer on a tray, just pull out tray and I’m ready to go. 😊 Rebecca being minimal and organised is the goal so do what works best for you 😊😊

For where we live, we have to have a netting over the top to keep hawks from swooping down and capturing our chickens as well as electric fencing to keep the predators out, such as possums, skunks, coyotes and foxes, especially at night. Thankfully during the day we can let them out to free range. To keep the chickens from flying we clip their wings. It is a joy to see your family all taking part in chicken farming!

Too bad about the rooster and a hen getting out. I love how the chickens feed the garden with the compost and the garden rejects feed the chickens! That's great with the swinging gates and the removable post in the middle! You can get a dump truck in there! Great idea Justin! We have our raised beds on a slight hill to. We had to step all our raised beds. it really doesn't look too bad there for Spring! Thanks for this video Rhodes family!

Quite a while ago I covered several 16' cattle panels with chicken wire and liked the result. However, when I sent to move them (I covered them individually), many of the plastic zip ties (ugh, plastic) had worn through, leaving the chicken wire "flapping". I made an 8' square pen for my roosters in my greenhouse (held together by snap clips) and this time when I covered the panels I used hog wire pliers and the little metal clips that fit them. This was a great improvement for my use :)

Just as a suggestion, if you clip only one side of their wings,it unbalances the chicken. When you clip both sides, although their wings are shorter, it makes flight easier. Good luck in keeping them contained in their run. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing your farm and family.

You probably should have already cut and covered the cover crop in the raised beds in order to have it completely decompose and then be ready for planting your crops. That's the point of growing a cover crop. Tops and roots decompose. Giles

Honestly, just put a few tall 2x4 posts w/strong string or wire across to posts on opposite side and cover top and sides w/attached deer netting. The chickens won’t get out. I had a lg chicken area w/6ft chain link fencing, stringing support cables across, then w/deer netting sealing the top. Staked wire panels around outside perimeter on the ground - predators could not dig to get in. It was simple and looked neat and tidy. It had a reg size chain link locking door 🔐 a person easily walked through.

Organization solutions CAN be absolute, but I've found it depends on each person's individual living situation. Kids, no kids? Cook from scratch, prepared meals? Pile phobic or no? And then there is the personality of the person (people) using the space. Biggest favor you can do with yourself is be willing to ask yourself if a storage/organization solution is working FOR YOU. And what that looks like will change as your life changes. Set your organization/declutter goal, make plans to accomplsih it and give yourself grace to change, rethink and decide what is or is not working for you. Blessings on you all.

May I suggest that you get either a roll of shelf liner from Home Depot or Lowe's? They have clear, semi-rigid liner with bumps (to prevent dishes from sliding around). If that's not rigid enough, you can also get what's called "Plas-tex". It's a 1/16 thick panel of 4ft by 8ft, that is used to cover walls in wet areas like bathroom or laundry or kitchen. It's easy to cut using utility knife to the size/width of the wire shelving.

Justin, I am sorry that you were injured. I hope you are improving rapidly. I sustained injuries to my spine in both my cervical spine and my lumbar spine. I have had cervical surgery and reconstructive surgery of the cervical spine. Then in 2012 I had my first lumbar spine surgery, in 2016 my second lumbar spine surgery, and in 2022 my third lumbar spine surgery. I am almost 78 years old, and I've decided there won't be any more spinal surgeries. It's important to keep your muscles strong -- they support the bones and keep the bones strong. I sincerely hope your injury heals and that you have no re-occurrences. Spinal injuries are no fun. In my experience, when chickens see that they can land on a solid surface, they can fly very high!!! Having a "flimsy" sort of fencing on top of you existing wooden fence would solve the problem. It could even be plastic fencing (1-2 feet high) that you staple on top of your current set up. It won't look as pretty, but it will be a quick and cheap fix.

easiest way for a chicken run where they cant escape just enclose it where its tall enough to walk in make small platforms to get to perches across the top so you no longer need the bulky mobile coop inside. plus then it makes it so if you wanted pigs in their the chickens can escape to the "rafter" type perchs.

I LOVE containers! I have been known to collect really GOOD boxes! 🥴

You can be more minimal and use containers. I really actually like to have all of my "like" items in that container and take that off the shelf and then put it all back. For me it is less work.

Your kids are amazing young people love to see them helping out!!! Now Rebekah's containers are just fine, being a minimalist is great but for some people it may not be and containers help keep us organized. So #keeprebekahscontainers ;-)

Whatever happened to Teddy, your sweet family dog before Whinney?
My chickens would jump onto that pretty shaw roof and as close to fence as it is on one side, they would simply jump onto the fence rail.

Teddy went to another family when Jonah was injured, to keep him from jumping on him. He was so happy there that they're letting him stay.

Maybe a chicken can't escape this -- maybe, if they are big birds what can't "fly" above 4-1/2 feet, but I can't think of ANY predator that can't jump/climb/crawl into this incredibly predator friendly run. I have NEVER seen a more predator-friendly run.

Funny thing is they had a video out about how great the last one was. They sure are fairly rough with their animals. From what I have gathered there are people behind the scenes with this channel that do alot of the work.

Instead of string trimming, why not throw up an electric fence around it and put a sheep or two in there for a day or two

Rebecca is looking slim and trim! I’m sure she has to have a lot of energy these days to keep up with the kids! Awesome girl you go! Wish I could still do it. But at 65 you just have to slow down.

    • @hamrad645
      @hamrad645 ปีที่แล้ว

Absolutely, we all have to slow down some time. I really had to slow down and had to retire from my job of 30+ years at age 70 due to spinal injuries and multiple lumbar spine surgeries. The best thing we can do for our bodies is learn to know our limits, and make sure your vehicle doesn't have a sign, painted in invisible paint (to you) that says "Hit Me" because, believe me, even though it isn't really there (that was a joke) people will hit you, whether it's your own fault or the fault of others. I won't bore you with the details, but listen to your body -- it will tell us if we just listen. Listening to your body won't, however, keep those other drivers from hitting you! LOL!
