    Technosoft was responsible for the port, they made the awesome Thunder Force franchise. What I think is they wanted to enhance the game in some ways, not only just porting it, added some flavor to the bonus stages and some other visual effects to make the game a little different than the original release but not so much, probably wanted to attract players of the original.
    The Genesis has les colors on-screen tha the Turbo so the palette choices are more bright probably because they had to share some colors for sprites and backgrounds, still, there's a great color hack where the colors are closer to the originals. The sidebar was added because the Genesis uses a bigger horizontal resolution than the Turbo so probably that's why is there. The music differences I think are more an artistic choice than other thing, also the music stops when there's a voice sample because for some odd reason all Technosoft sound drivers weren't developed with priority on sample playback so everytime a sample plays the rest of the channels from both sound chips stop playing lol This happens in some early Genesis games (Altered Beast, Golden Axe, etc). As an extra, there are some passwords in the Genesis version that let you play music arrangements from other Technosoft games like Elemental Master, Thunder Force III, Herzog Zwei and another one that's perhaps from japanese PCs.

    TG-16 Main table theme blows the genesis version out the water, although the genesis version is good, TG-16 version is the crown winner.

      Agreed. The female vampire face is MUCH creepier looking, and better looking overall. The Genesis port looks squished. Maybe it's because of that side menu things look squished?

    The Turbo had more colors on screen than the Genesis, it looks much better.
    The reason why the music stops on the Genesis is because that is how real pinball games were at the time. The music would play as long as the ball was in play.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I think the PC Engine version is superior in every way other than those bonus stages. It would be very cool if someone could patch the Genesis bonus stages into the PC Engine version.
      Also, I want a SNES port that combines the best of both too.

  • @WhitePointerGaming
    @WhitePointerGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Another point of difference with the Mega Drive version is that it actually has a final "boss" to beat once you've completed all the other stages. The TG-16 version doesn't have this.

    Very easy choice. The enhancements to the Mega Drive version is all for the better. Especially the depth of the music makes it sounds so much better and cooler and makes it come alive.

  • @miketate3445

    A few technical mistakes in your comparison: The TG16 has a lot more on screen colors than the Genesis. Over 400 vs 64. As far as sound, neither system has a greater frequency range than the other. The SNES is the only system I can think of that can't get all the way up to 20,000 hz. The Genesis can make sounds with more complex overtones due to its FM synth. Finally, the Genesis mix can't have too much reverb since the Genesis can't do reverb.

  • @AfroRyan
    @AfroRyan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think they're both pretty phenomenal games. I assume it was an accident to show the Genesis/Megadrive dragon bonus table comparing it to the TG-16 skull bonus level, since...you know, they both have dragon bonus levels and skull bonus levels. Also you forgot to mention the exclusive final boss in the Genesis version.

    Did the Genesis have a stronger color palate than the TG-16? I thought both had a total of 256 colors, but the Genesis could only put around 40 on screen at once while the TG could put almost all of them on screen at once, meaning more on-screen colors than the SNES.

    • @syphic
      @syphic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah doesnt the tg16 have a bigger color pallate and can display way more colors?

    • @mscottjohnson3424
      @mscottjohnson3424 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@syphic According to Wikipedia, the Sega Genesis has a color palette of 512 total colors, but can only put 61 on screen at a time. The TurboGrafx-16 also has 512 total colors, but can display 482 on screen at once, nearly 8 times more than the Genesis. The Super Nintendo had a massive color palette of 32,768 colors, but could only display 256 on screen at one time, a bit more than half of what the TurboGrafx could do. When it comes to color, the TurboGrafx should mop the floor with the Genesis. Where the Genesis has an edge is with the much faster processor that can handle more background layers, parallax scrolling, more sprite animation, etc.

    • @Johnnygrafx
      @Johnnygrafx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mscottjohnson3424 ah, so perhaps the different look of Dragons Fury is the result of less colors rather than more.

    • @mscottjohnson3424
      @mscottjohnson3424 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Johnnygrafx Probably. Look at games like Lords of Thunder. The TurboGrafx-CD version looks much more colorful than the Sega CD version. Sega CD might look a bit more dark and gritty, if that's your thing, but the TurboGrafx has more clear transition between colors while Sega uses hard color transitions and dithering. Side by side, most games look better on the Turbo than the Genesis. Street Fighter II, OutRun, Altered Beast, Valis, Fatal Fury Special, they all look way more colorful on the Turbo.

    I think you may have some personal bias. When it comes to Sega Genesis soundtracks, it's extremely difficult to do better than Techosoft. They are one of the premier masters of the Genesis sound chip.
    I think Fury sounds way better.

    • @Johnnygrafx

  • @luke_y_444
    @luke_y_444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The pixels are not square on the PCE version, to fill the width of a TV screen. Suddenly the image is simply overwritten. For this element alone, I prefer to play on Mega Drive than PCE. Otherwise, I have to play the PCE version first. And if I put the MD version behind it, it's "Wooh".
    If I play on MD first, when I switch to PCE, it sounds more like "arff".
    Then I can understand that the players who have already practiced on PCE first, necessarily the affection will be on this version. Any change to a game that we like, if it's not perfect, we don't like it.
    I still think that objectively the Mega Drive version is the superior version. But yes, it is not perfect in comparison.

    My sister and I played this like crazy on the Genesis. Funny the censorship did allow it to stay in the house because my mom looked at it and thought it was just destroying monsters. (We did have to fight to save this game from going to the trash.) If she saw the pentagrams she would have thrown it out of the house. lol
    I loved the music. I would always just try hard to get to the bonus stage just to hear it. I remember the ball being trackable but it does look different on a Flatscreen compared to a CRT. (Still looking for a replaceable copy after our original copy was stolen.)

    Easy winner: Devil’s Crush. If you are in the lower level of Dragon’s Fury, you’re going to lose your ball in a hurry. That’s a FATAL flaw in an otherwise great game. Cheap, unavoidable ball loss is a part of pinball, but not to the extent that we see it in Dragon’s Fury. Luck and bad luck are a part of pinball-but not to the extent we see in this game. I felt my good games were a consequence of chance, not my skill. My comments explain why Devil’s Crush for the TG16 is on practically every list of greatest video pinball games ever, and DF is not. Devil’s Crush gets the gameplay right. DF has nice graphics and isn’t a horrible game, but they really fouled up the gameplay. Devil’s Crush is far more a game of skill-it plays better….far better.

    I've only ever played Devil Crash MD, on my region modded UK Mega Drive
    There is a greater vibrancy and pop in the colours, although that dragon's head bonus stage is a bit messy.
    The sound absolutely kills it for me, one of the greatest soundtracks of all time, although I do get what you're saying about the muffled nature of it and agree
    In all, it's one of my favourite games of all time, and away from this experience I never played pinball

    4:10 Eh, just want to point out that the Genesis absolutely does not have a superior colour palette to the PC Engine.
    The Genesis actually has the worst colour capabilities of all the 16-bit generation consoles. And, in fact, the PC Engine kinda blows away the Genesis when it comes to colours, being able to normally display 482 colours on-screen using 32 16-colour palettes chosen from a 512-colour master palette vs the Genesis being able to normally display 61 colours on-screen using 4 16-colour palettes chosen from a 512-colour master palette.
    This is why Devil's Crush looks noticeably prettier on PC Engine. It's not some artistic choice on the Genesis team's part that didn't quite work out, but because the Genesis simply couldn't display as many colours there, so everything ended up looking a lot more garish.
    Also, just to add, the SNES utterly blows both of those systems away in terms of colours, being able to display 256 colours on-screen normally using 16 16-colour palettes chosen from a 32,768-colour master palette. It can even display well over 2000 on-screen colours normally during full gameplay by using the standard Direct Colour feature of Modes 3, 4 and 7 as well, although this feature was very rarely used, as the normal colour modes actually look nicer due to how they specifically work.
    It's kinda crazy how so many people these days really do think the Genesis is better than it is in many ways.
    PS. I really would have loved to have seen this game ported to SNES and taking full advantage of all of its capabilities too. I honestly think it could have ended up with the best version of this game across the board.
