    During this cutscene I thought we were winning the battle for reach. Little did I know this was the beginning of the end.

      You hit the nail literally on the head as after this mission is when the team started to drop. At this point we had cut off their initial invasion plans, or so we thought, then all hell broke loose. By the time we reached New Alexandria it was all but over and the Covenant controlled nearly the entire planet and all escape routes. It's amazing the Autumn was able to escape.

      That push we make to the Spires. It really seemed like we were going to make some kind of a difference.
      That MAC round was talked up pretty good. And it couldn't to a tenth of what that carrier was capable of. That was the real "OH SH!T" moment of the battle.
      Winter Contingency, "Oh, there's Covenant on the Reach? Pfft, there is an army of Spartans here, what are they gonna do?"
      Sword Base, "That's what you guys get. You mess with Reach, we Spartans turn you to ash."
      Discover the Covenant army: "Ooooooo, that looks like fun. Time to show the Covenant what we can do!"
      Carrier shows up: "...we're all going to die, aren't we?"

      I still think one of the reasons why reach fell was because the covenant had the upper hand, not in numbers, but by surprise. Who knows if they've been there for months. recon, gathering intel, testing how quick UNSC forces are to respond, the size of their force, rotations etc. If it were under different circumstances, I think the UNSC would've stood a chance, with the CSO down and if the covenant didn't have the element of surprise. Thing is they already established a beachhead long before the UNSC could even notice

      @@Padlock_Steve that’s the thing most of H1-3’s cutscenes were filmed like it was a film meanwhile Halo Reach’s cutscene were film in nearly the same way as that of those camcorder films where they film in first person POV or on CCTV cameras and generally moving as if you are moving alongside the characters as another person or a camera mounted on the characters themselves, I believe this is a way to make the scenes more personal and connected to the viewer rather than the cinematic vibe that were used in previous titles

      @@DEEZ_N4T That is... a very great way of putting it, and a great use of cinematography in those games. I don't know how to explain it well, but Halos 1, 2, and 3 placed alot of emphasis on the events that these characters are placed in, even with them changing the course of it. Halo Reach is very... reaction based. The Spartans and the UNSC are watching the chaos and wondering if they're going to win and survive or not. There is no Halo ring to run around and blow up, just a doomed world and a doomed fate they're stuck with.

      @@dr.boring7022 The reason it is a POV / Cam is because we are meant to be witnessing the Fall of Reach, whereas in 1-3 we are dictating the story. Reach already happened we are just remembering it.

    ya gotta love the beginning of Reach, the tactical feel of being in a squad of elite spartans. Thinking in the first couple missions the UNSC is putting up a decent defense of the planet and you might win the day.......only a few missions later to taste defeat after defeat being pushed back to the brink, This was bungie at their best and nobody can tell me otherwise.

      I think it pulls off the same style thematic switch that Halo 1 does. In the game you were fighting off hordes of aliens in a galactic war only to realize it shifts to a "fight just to survive" horror game.
      Halo Reach has you feel like you're managing to fight the aliens off your world and save it, even to the point Jorge gives his life thinking he saved the planet, only for it to be dashed in the very next mission.

      What? Bungie didnt created the abomination "Halo 5". Bungie left after creating reach. Showing that the universe WE got is Just at the begining to be Explored. But Microsoft dumped the idea and 343 created 3 awful games that actually killed the Franchise. But 343 isnt quite to blame they Really tryed to keep halo alive but were forced to create this Microtransaction Casino battle pass bullshit. They also Made stupid decisions like changing the Art Style - which they had to reverse in the end because 99% hated it.
      But before you think im a bungboy - holy makarony did bungie fucked up destiny. And there is No Microsoft to blame. They fucked IT up the same way all by their own so im convinced bungie would have ruind Halo the same way. They were just smart enough to use a diffrent Game to test out these scam tactics.

      Just compare Halo infinite with diabolo 4 - then you realize what Microsoft wanted and what 343 was able to fight Off. Im Not saying Halo infinite is good. Its not. (OVERALL - Not talking just about Multiplayer) But diabolo with sneaky Button tactics to make you misclick amd accidental buy Something you dont wanted really Kicks the bucket

      The CSO wasn't revealed yet and so far only corvettes had been spotted around the planet. This is one that was threatening ONI headquarters and was a priority target, especially once a Spartan team called in a strike. It wouldn't be until after that first tower is destroyed that the true scale of the Covenant occupation was revealed and the CSO was spotted.

      @@VegetaLF7 THIS. The storytelling in Reach was really chaotic, to be fair, and sometimes a little hard to follow. And i always found this whole, "Oh where did the several kilometer sized ship and this giant army come from all of a sudden?" thing did not make any sense at all. Where the towers completely rendering the entire subcontinent not only impenetrable to sensors but also making it physically invisible? You could easily see that ship from orbit, not to mention a fleet and a landed army of Covenant making a lightshow like a major city. Its not as if Reach isn't the fleets headquarters with ships and space stations orbiting all around it.
      If the pylons were making them invisible, how did they build them in the first place? They had to get there somehow. Did an entire CSO Battlecarrier including its battlegroup just sneak in between two watch shifts? Did they teleport? Was the ship and fleet cloaked and at that point, why did they then need the cloaking pylons then?
      And after several drastic, unexplained Covenant incursions on the planet, a planet that is the military hub of the UNSC, including Covenant warships appearing ON the planet, behind the orbital defense lines, and sensor grids nobody noticed an entire subcontinent going dark for weeks/months?
      Like: "Did someone hear anything about Italy in the last few weeks?"
      "No, all dark. They all don't answer the phone or emails for 2 weeks now and so far, it the ISS crew told us they don't have their lights on during the night."
      "Ahhh, they probably just all have a hangover."
      "Yeah, that's good old Italy. They'll call us when they feel better. Remember when everyone in Ireland disappeared for a month after last St.Patricks day?"
      I loved Reach i think its the haloest Halo of all. But that extends to the storytelling. Halo was always a special case in terms of storytelling. And as Halo peaked in Gameplay and presentation with Reach (imho), It also peaked in the writers confusion about what is actually happening in the game.

      ​@Desert Power Yes. A probe latched on to UNSC Iroquois after the battle of Sigma Octanus IV. That's how the Covenant learned the location of Reach. However between Reach and Sigma Octanus IV was only a few days which makes the book and the game incompatible.
      Book UNSC can detect objects in slipspace (not sure about game UNSC). Indeed, the covenant invasion force inside slipspace was detected in the book. If the Covenant really did send a vanguard before the main force, it would have been done in real space. And traveling from beyond UNSC detection range to Reach will take a LOT more than a week in real space. The Covenant don't have pinpoint slipspace capability at this point so them slipping (teleporting?) in to the planet can be ruled out in the book.

    This game, man oh man, it was so good. What's even cooler is the website with our old characters STILL exists. My old General is still able to be viewed with all that armor I purchased. A lot of love went into Reach. I will always remember how beautiful they made the planet look with the aurora effects, several moons and just raw forests/mountains. They really brought an entire planet to life even with its own animals as well.

    Just an interesting correction. At 1:07 Jorge says "repeat" on the radio. Soldiers will never use the word "repeat" as that refers to fire control orders, which could cause dangerous miscommunication.
    Soldiers will always say "say again" when they need something repeated. Just a small oversight from Bungie from an otherwise amazing game that brings great military action to Halo.

      Literally wasn't that fleets job. Long Night of Solace was basically the mobile headquarters and flagship of a fleet dedicated to the location and retrieval of Forerunner relics. They deployed troops to get things ready for the actual invasion force, but they were mainly there for the Forerunner relics.

      You don't know enough about the lore buddy. This isn't an invasion fleet, this is a fleet that discovered bridge by accident looking for artefacts and is now making landings which they do undetected while waiting for the fleet of particular justice

    Fun fact about the defenses of Reach. If the Empire invaded reach with the fleet they had at Endor invaded they would have lost. Hard. That being said the Covenant took a lot of casualties despite technically winning. Could be considered a Pyrrhic victory.

      @@Woopor As well as plot, it's largely due to the fact that star wars space battles are inspired by WWII, so starfighters are meant to mimic WWII fighter planes and capital ships are meant to mimic WWII naval battleships

    Wouldnt the mac round have cause an enormous explosion upon impact with the ground? Like nuclear level explosion?

      They used a standard MAC round, not a high explosive MAC round. These MAC rounds are slugs that generate power from the kinetic momentum from such a high shot.
      Plus, it went right through the corvette.

      Hiroshima was 16k tonnes.

      It being a corvette with weaker shielding and superstructure, they likely were able to lower the velocity of the round to avoid collateral without lowering its effectiveness. It’s also, as they say, “in atmosphere(!?)”, so the air resistance would also slow it down.

      MACs are only fired at that capacity in orbit, otherwise it would likely burn up in atmosphere or cause a whole host of issues. The other time we see a MAC fired at the ground it does exactly what you’d think a metal slug traveling at relativistic speeds would do

      One of those necessary plot holes for a video game. If banshees moved like actual fliers, it would be an extremely unfun series as we got strafed to shit in every open space, especially since almost all the games the split jaws have air superiority

      I've always thought the covenant had the banshees as something more akin to a ghost than an actual plane, basically flying bikes. Light, individual vehicles that just happen to take advantage of flight. Just assumed the covenant had larger, faster craft for proper flight. Or maybe we're just better at making metal go really, really fast.

      @@amog8202 Canonically, Banshees do move much faster than in the games, but they are largely for ground attack and the Covenant have larger, faster craft like Seraphs for air superiority roles and spaceflight.

      Presumably the sheer kinetic force imparted by the MAC round pushed it down faster, also whatever propulsion was keeping it up failed when the ship was obliterated, and I imagine that amount of weight would come down pretty quickly without anything holding it up

    Imagine being on a Mac Defense Plattform chilling on low orbit. Taking down corvettes and shit not knowing there's a MF CSO CARRIER!! already in the planet sending coordinates to an overwhelming and massive invasion force.

      Essentially really powerful coil guns. They're basically rail guns with a difference in how the end effect is achieved, but ultimately it's a really big depleted uranium in Halo's case shell being fired really fast.

      MAC's or Magnetic Accleration Cannons are essentially entire space stations dedicated to essentially being a gun, these massive stations are usually used for destroying oncoming CAS cruisers (in this case being used to destroy a small covanent corvette).

      Ludicrously huge railguns floating in orbit. Railguns exist in real life, but they’re still in development. The advantages is they don’t use gunpowder and and they’re more than twice the velocity of your average bullet. Just uses the sheer force of a hunk of metal slung at supersonic speeds basically

    on the topic of halo reach, which moment got you shocked up the most? Main was when John #5 picks us up and throws us out of the air lock as i watch the vessel blows up with him on board. still gives me chills to this day when i think about it.

    Minor nitpick but it would've been cool if they got the sound right for the MAC cannon blowing through the corvette. First of all it should've been much louder. Second it should've taken a while for the sound to reach them, instead of almost instantly.

      There are normally a net of them around the planet, they can rotate to fire at any target in any direction, but due to how big a Orbital MAC is its quite slow to move. Plus the covenant fleet at reach was too big for them to make much of a difference, too many targets.

    The most underrated halo game, for me the best is halo 2 and halo 3 could be the best but the story has a bit spoil. But Reach, I don't know they are just something else they are unique

    Side note, would still be a Hiroshima size blast, but the said orbital defense, that could mean anything. The Navy had some ships in orbit alongside the defense platforms. A frigate easily could’ve made that shot.

    that kinetic projectile is going too slow to be fired from a super mac, plus the kinetic energy released would be explosive not the little splash we get into the lake lol. Someone should see if they can mod the projectile to go faster and with an explosion at the lake to simulate more realism

      MAC cannons can adjust the charge level of the capacitors, that way they can fire their safely at a planet's surface. MAC guns don't always fire at max velocity

      Also, if the Eröd fired at a planet's surface at full power (impact energy equivalent to 51.6 Gigatons of tnt) it would cause a Mass Extinction Event, cracking the crust and showing the atmosphere with billions of tonnes of ash and fire

    Too bad this was bungies swan song for their Halo. When343 got it, well, we all can see what they did. Halo 4 has little replay value, and I haven't even wasted my money buying halo 5 or infinite. Maybe in a few years I'll check the bargain bin for it.

      @@vincents6511 one "normal" personnel rocket would not completely desinigrate a phantom. do you not think the covenant would have upgraded alien armor on their assault crafts? lol that little rocket did way too much damage. yes i know how old the game is....... i also know how old the movie transformers is which had muchhhhhh better effects and made around the same time.

      @@newslavecity8311 Transformers was a CGI Film that was rendered in High-Poly on very high grade computers. Those effects were not achievable in real time back then, and they still aren’t perfect even now. The reason Transformers and all other movies that involve CGI look so good is because of the quality of the models and the time given to render them.

    Im pretty sure the orbital defenses shoot 3000 ton ferric tugston rounds that travel 4 percent of the speed of light
    Which would create a 55 kilometer deep crater in Reach
    This is more of a frigate MAC gun

      The energy of the MAC cannons can be varied, the stats you listed are just the maximum
