    Just listening to this now…I just want to thank you for your comments about those mommas that had c-sections. All of my children (9 of them) were delivered via c-section. For years and years I struggled with the feelings of failure because I felt there was something wrong with me as a woman, wife and mother. And I don’t know when it changed, but at some point, I realized that I was grateful for medical technology, because without it, I would have died during my first delivery. So God has given me the gift of motherhood 9 times because of the marvel of medical advancement. I no longer feel “less than” because of this, instead I have been able to share my experiences with other women who might be experiencing a c/s for the first time, or are struggling with their own sense of failure. Motherhood, in whatever way God sees fit to bestow it upon us, is a beautiful, hard, blessed thing! So thank you for talking about this!!! And yes! My body is a testimony to the lives I have been privileged to bring forth!!

      Oh wow 9 precious babies and 9 c-sections!!! I had my first via c-section last year and was devastated because I was sure it meant I would never have a large family, which has always been my heart’s desire. Do you mind sharing a little more about your 9 c-sections or any tips for having multiple surgeries? ❤️

    • @rosiegirl2485

      Congratulations to all of you with your c-sections.
      It's beautiful to bring life into being by any and all means.
      I am going to describe failure to you, in a non-depressing sort of way. It's just a reality.
      I suffered from infertility. All I ever wanted to be was a wife and mother. My mom had 7 kids, my grandmothers had 5 and the other 14! My only sister had 1 and never wanted anymore. Though my nephew came along 7 years after..ha!
      Following years of fertility Dr's, I finally got pregnant naturally, at 29. But 3 months in I found out that it was ectopic. I was devastated. It felt like a bad joke. Removing the baby, leaves the same scar as a c-section. Eight months later I had a second ectopic in my remaining tube.
      I was hit by a drunk driver on a big wheel when I was 10 years old, before it was against the law.
      I may carry the scars that resemble a c-section, but I carry them with pride at this point.
      I use to really, really feel like a failure! This thing that it seemed all women could do, with all my treatment, all my praying...I couldn't!
      I have a son that I adopted at 25, who was 3 months old, who is now 36, and he is he light of my life.
      I now ware my scars with honor. They are proof of the two children who hopefully will great me one day when I go to heaven. Pray for me that I can get there!

    Oh my goodness!! God works in mysterious ways! I came across Emily's channel for dating advice in 2018 as a young protestant Christian in college. Now I discovered this channel through my husband (we are both 24) because we are converting to become Catholics and he got me into watching/learning everything catholic! So surreal, she was the first gal I looked up to for marriage/advice, little did I know that I would be converting to Catholicism with my husband and watching her now as a married woman! God bless!!

    Emily, wow!! I was nearly in tears as you were talking about being kept from the chapel. My oldest brother died from cancer a few months ago. A couple weeks before he died, I had seen him for the last time (we lived several states away). I had this overwhelming need to get myself to the adoration chapel at my church, it was around 10pm. I recognized the woman who was in the chapel, but because of the time the doors were locked. I had such a massive meltdown. At first anger, how dare someone keep me from this sacred place, when all I needed was to sit in His presence!? Then my thoughts went to… I hope her replacement doesn’t show up!! But then I thought, why this? Do I want to reward her with more time with our Lord? Then I realized, He is here with me… not just in this little chapel. So it still took 30 minutes to pull myself together, say a rosary for my brother, and another. Then, I remembered a 24 hour rosary garden that was much closer to my home. I drove there and realized I had done what I had needed, for the moment. But I carried such anger, frustration, sadness toward this lady who wouldn’t let me in the chapel. I had the chance a couple weeks ago to talk to her. Explain what had happened and how it had effected me. I forgave her, I understand it was a safety issue.
    I pray that I never keep anyone from our Lord at any point in life.

    I love this podcast and have been an avid listener for at least 3 years now (even introduced it to my non-Catholic husband who tunes in every once in a while). I have to say, along with Ep. 125 with the prayer for the wise ordering of one’s life at the end (which has radically changed my life in a very short time span), this is by far my favorite interview of yours. I have been reading God’s Glorious Girl to my daughter since she was days old, bought God’s Brave Boy for my nephew who is due in 9 days, and read I Choose the Sky years ago, before I was engaged. I LOVE Emily Wilson Hussem and of course Matt Fradd, and so many points in this conversation just really hit me in the best of ways. Thank you thank you!!!

    I definitely don’t think women should be shamed for having had a c-section-I’ve had a natural birth, a c-section (twins) and then a natural VBAC. I do, however, think it’s very important for women to know that there are many things they CAN do and choose ahead of time that will dramatically lessen their chances of a surgical birth (that aren’t just “mind over matter”). For Catholic mamas I love the book Made For This, which is a wonderful starting point for understanding the medical vs midwifery models for birth. Thanks for a lovely interview, both of you. Ps. We also got married December 30!❤

    The approach to c-section is so different in Europe. I too had an emergency c-section with my first daughter (after 24h of inducing) but I had no problems with vbac for the second (although the birth was very long) and the third time (although third time was in the US and I had to fight for it). There are naturally different stories and reasons but I have seen so many people having all births by c-sections just because the first one was (which is mostly for the convenience of the doctors).

    Emily, I’m so sorry that you experienced shame after your c-section. I understand how it can feel when people within your community don’t support you. I had two c-sections myself but thankfully never experienced shame (though people made comments, of course). I was a little disappointed to hear that you felt that the insensitive comments all came from the “crunchy” community. I don’t doubt that some shamed you, I received that as well, but I also received a ton of love and support from my “crunchy” friends, who helped me navigate my births and find a provider to support me in having a VBAC with my third baby. None of my dear friends ever made me to feel like I “failed.” Sometimes our bodies don’t do what they’re supposed to, it’s true, and that’s okay. Illness and death weren’t part of God’s original design for our bodies, either, and everyone will still experience those. We didn’t fail, we just live in a fallen world.

    I looked at the feast days near my due date as well. Such a cool thing to do. My baby girl was born this August, near the feast of the Assumption. So special!
    I'm so glad you are speaking openly about your birth stories. Mine was not what I expected at all and I'm so thankful that my husband and mother could be there with me, but it was still a very distressing. I'm so thankful for women that talk so openly about their birth stories. It helped me to talk about it openly. I've never had a C-section and what you shared was helpful for me because I'm high risk and I know it's a possibility (at least according to my doctor). You're also so right that women can be crazy judgmental about birth!!

    Men don't have an issue with comparing, I was competing in sports competitions and I was always avidly trying to compare myself to others, the bizarre mindset of women thinking that happiness comes from stopping comparing themselves is not only alien to me, but incredibly harmful to themselves. Comparison is a logical tool, if you start hating that logical tool you got one less tool in your skillset, and guess if it makes you more or less logical as a result.

    God has wonderful plans- and a sense of humor. I unfortunately ended up with a csection on my first birth and then have had 4 more via csections. For #4 we knew we were having a little boy and had already picked his saint-inspired name. When I was nearing the end of pregnancy I asked when they would call to sked my delivery and my Dr was upset cuz it should have already been sked. So he had them call me the very next day and I had hoped to make it closer to my due date but she said they only had one day left and that was the day. So we booked it and moved on. A couple weeks later I came across an entry about the saint in a book and lo and behold- his feast day was the date I was forced to choose! So my son was able to be born on the feast day without even planning it. I told everyone I knew about God's little wink!

    I want to start off by saying I enjoy watching Mr. Fradd's videos, and especially his recent interview with Michael Lofton. Also, it doesn't look like there's anything problematic in this interview. However, I think it is worth mentioning that in the content for women on her channel, Mrs. Wilson-Hussem sometimes comes across as having a negative view of men. Out of charity, I'll assume any apparent negativity is entirely unintentional, and she only wants to safeguard the welfare of her female audience. But it does seem to me that she is leading women to believe that they should not look at men as generally trustworthy, but rather require men to "prove" themselves as such to be worthy of dating them. Certainly, we must all be prudent while getting to know a potential spouse, but such a "hermeneutic of suspicion" that automatically ascribes a negative motivation to a person's words and actions where such an intention is not expressed or clearly evident does not seem very charitable to me. I think as Christians, we should generally try to assume the best of others unless we have a solid reason to conclude otherwise.

    As someone exploring Catholicism, I get so turned off whenever someone is talking about God "speaking" to them or the Lord "telling" them to do something. Can someone explain what this is? Like, these people don't literally think they're hearing the voice of God do they? I also don't understand crediting God for your TH-cam video going viral.. Like, it seems almost narcissistic to me to think that God would go out of his way to "intervene" in your life, while others suffer, because then you're saying he chose *not* to intervene in cases of suffering?

    • @joedwyer3297
      @joedwyer3297 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes of course. When people say they believe God is telling to them to do something, they usually don't mean theyre hearing His voice. (But dont discount the possibility, it can happen!) What they mean is they have this feeling of certainty in that moment, like God has set the moment up and imprinted the certainty on their heart. But obviously, someone can be mistaken, or it might not be God but the devil. There is a process of dicernment you can use to understand more. I think Fr Ripperger talks about it.
      And your second point, whats the alternative to attributing your success to God? Attributing it to yourself. I think its much less narcisistic to give God the glory

    • @joedwyer3297
      @joedwyer3297 ปีที่แล้ว

      To add on to the last point. Just because God choose to help you in a given moment does not mean He's not free to help someone else. I dont fully understand what youre getting at by that, but if you explain ill try to help
