I have a feeling, for decades after you and I both leave this world behind, you will be forever remembered and lauded as a truly great historian of this era. Thanks in large part to you, my entire family will be coming to Bangkok for nearly a month starting in Mid-May; would love to simply shake your hand in honor.

I saw you on Siam Paragon a few days ago but I was too shy to approach you and tell you that I truly enjoy your channel and you’re an amazing storyteller! Your way to show Bangkok makes every neighborhood an interesting place to visit. The TAT should give you a praise for your contribution by showing a side of Bangkok that even locals do not know. Keep up with your good work!
Never be shy to say Hi to your idol, you may not get this chance again. The most/least (depending on circumstance) they can do it look at you a bit incredulously at first, then realizing you're a fan, say "thank you," before hurriedly walk away.

This is our neighborhood, Pat. My husband and I have visited BKK several times, and are headed back this coming winter. We use this area as our home base when we visit SEAsia. We have always stayed 2 minutes from the Skytrain stairs at Bangkok Loft Inn. I think it is changing, but it seems to be benefitting regular humans as well as others. There's a small Theravada Temple back there. The entire Wat is all there, only everything is on a much smaller scale, than the Grander Temples through out the city. Beautiful murals. Counting the days!
I'm glad l finally got to Wongwian Yai as it's a very authentic example of Bkk in the 1960s / 70s. I could have done an hours video easily and included that temple and so much more!

Thanks and really glad the videos evoke great nostalgia for you. Of course l didn't take the old photos (l wish l had!) but l do enjoy trying to work out the same location the photigrapher stood in so l can take a present day shot!
This reminds me of another BKK roundabout, Pat... Victory Monument. To me it's the Piccadilly Circus of Bangkok, totally deserving a look. Btw, IIRC from WWY bts, you can use the skywalk to get to the main boulevard, then descending to the sidewalk, keep on another half km or so, you'll get to the train station. A longish walk, but you get to tromp on local ground.
On my first visit to Thailand, I stayed near BTS Wongwian Yai, and I was a little surprised when a girl on a motorbike with no helmet could not speak English when asking about how to operate a 1 baht water machine given its proximity to the main city area. Very local feel I cannot agree more. I even saw the SRT railway station to Mahachai. I have learnt a lot from your videos about the history of different parts of Bangkok including Wongwian Yai.

If you get off at the BTS you can take a shortcut, walk about 20 meters and then take a right down the side soi...you'll be able to get to the circle a lot faster
Bangkok Pat, thank you for the video. I learned about your channel from Global Travel Mate. I have to tell you that Wongwian today looks a lot like the Sukhumvit area when I was living in Bangkok in 1983 and 84. I was a student at the International School of Bangkok, when it was still on Sukhumvit Soi 15. This was like a walk back in time in a city that I miss greatly.
another great show. I like the map at the beginning of the video to show me where the area is. I was also interested in the leather goods. aloha, keep up the great work.
Lat Ya Road, near Wongwian Yai, when I was a child, there were many old sukiyaki restaurants. which is in some buildings and often expanding some parts on the sidewalk My father takes me every week. which is very tasty for me At present, there is only one old suki restaurant at the end of the road. And on the side of the road, there are almost 20 Chim Chum (dipping) restaurants. Currently my father passed away in 2019 😔🥹😊
I discovered your channel not too long ago and been watching many episodes and learnt so much from you about Bkk. Solid information through and through in each episode, and entertaining as well, with your wit and humorous observations. Hope you will keep your channel going.. I'm still going through your past episodes and repeating some as well, as I explore Bkk. Your knowledge is invaluable and thank you for sharing it with us!
When I first came here seven years ago, my wife and I lived on Charoen Nakorn Soi 10. We shopped at the old Khlong San Plaza and market very often, for both clothing and food. This was before Icon Siam was constructed. Things are always changing. I'm glad to know that there will be a Red Line station there. That's exciting news!
Great Vid, I stayed there while I was a Monk with the Head Monk of Bangkok Yai or Krung Thep Yai in Thai. . 5 or 6 sets of Elephant Tusks and a Part Gold Buddha with a History.
Really appreciated this video, as I used to live very close to Khlongsan market. Moved to another area because ICON really changed the vibe, as did the demolition of the market.
Thoroughly enjoyable and informative video Pat, such a vast difference to living on the other sidevof the river. I know I'll be tracing your steps on my next visit to Bangkok. Such a tragic story on the family who lost their lives, may they all rest in peace now. 🙏
Brilliant video Pat and brings back good memories as I used to work in the area. On Lat Ya road for ECC, many yrs ago when I was a young English Teacher there. I used to live in itsaraphap Road and off course was always late for class and ended up taking my life into my own hands by using the motorbike taxi. Great days! Thank you
I recognize the circle and the end of the train line from the tour I took with you last summer. That was just the beginning, we ended up at the Stay Cafe about 6 hours later. Great day! I think the "if it swims" quote was on the now closed seafood restaurant on Suk soi 24. Wasn't the Nana plaza quote something like "if it smells like fish..." ? 😏
Sir, your sense of humor is off the roof, I Love It!!! And I was at Wongwian Yai a month ago and totally loved the neighborhood... It's great walking around in the evenings... Such a chill place!
Thanks and glad you liked the jokes! Wongwian Yai hopefully won't get flooded with yuppies and stoners as long as they don't have weed shops and co-working spaces!
Great video about this area Pat. You checkout everything what someone needs to know about this area. From markets to condos. Great for people who think about moving to Bangkok and where to stay.
Thanks Frank, it's an unusual part of the city n that it's largely untouched commercially so you get that 1970s vibe about it, and for some that's an attraction!
@@frankoseven I’m doing well and looking forward to my family and I making a return trip back to Thailand in July. First time in 30 years that I’ve managed to travel there twice in the same calendar year from Chicago.
Was just in Thonburi about a month ago by accident after taking the train out of Nakhon Pathom in the wrong direction. Had to take a cab to the southern bus station and then a three hour bus trip in the correct direction. I will give it another look over some day hopefully. The view looking downward was great along with the maps. At least you are half Thai I look much more out of place when I am wandering in Nakhon Nowhere getting lots of stares which in my opinion is always a good sign. Meaning the area is likely a foreigner free zone. No weed shops? Well a mixed blessing as that in itself keeps the falang StOnErS away.
I cut out a section of dialogue where I said ''No farang hipsters or stoners thanks to no co-working spaces or weed shops'' but I cut it as it didn't really fit. Should have left it in!
The ride from the Wongwien Yai railway station to the Maeklong Railway Market, via Mahachai and the little ferry to the Ban Laem railway station is a long day on rock-hard wooden train seats, but definitely worth the effort. Amazingly pristine scenery, great seafood and the Railway Market are a taste of the real Thailand which is rapidly disappearing. Bring a foam pad to sit on... I never realized there were so many Merry King stores. I used to stay in a shophouse in Rangsit, next to the Zeer technology mall. Traveling from Victory Monument by mini-bus, we would tell the driver, "จอด Merry King ด้วย" (jot merry king dooie"), to have him let us off at the pedestrian overpass in front of the long-defunct Merry Kings building, directly across from Zeer... And somewhere I have pics of the Hawaii and Phahon theatres, among others around Thailand, something of a hobby of mine, seeing those grand old facades, however in disrepair... Thanks for another fascinating look at a great area, off the tourist track...
The other side of the river... Last Sunday the BPG photowalk was on the other side: Fascinating sois and markets and klongs. Will ping you when the magazine is published.
loving your series of "Around Bangkok" videos - I'm looking to move over in a little over a year to teach english, and i'm really enjoying this preview! (also your info on rents is VERY handy!)
I took the same motor cycle taxi ride from WongWianYai BTS to the railway station a few years back having WRONGLY travelled to the BTS Station hoping to catch an early morning train to the famous train market. Luckily, a waiting motor cycle taxi took me AT SPEED from the BTS Station to the main railway station and I just managed to catch the train. WongWian Yai is a very interesting place to visit and well away from the main Bangkok tourist scene. Great VDO, by the way Pat ! 👍

@@scottDchicago good to hear. Enjoy your time there 😁 👍
Your videos are a work of art Pat , great vibe
Outstanding report, thank you for all of your work!!!
Cheers Joe😇
Seeing abandoned shopping malls make me think of the dawn of the dead movie.
Brilliant, yet again Pat👏
Cheers Seamus 😍

Great video Pat, as always, and never short of cats.
Many thanks, it's a great area!
The other side of the river... Last Sunday the BPG photowalk was on the other side: Fascinating sois and markets and klongs. Will ping you when the magazine is published.
I'm looking forward to that collection of pictures mate!
loving your series of "Around Bangkok" videos - I'm looking to move over in a little over a year to teach english, and i'm really enjoying this preview! (also your info on rents is VERY handy!)
'Liked' and already subscribed. 'Thai Talk with Dan' made very nice comments about you on his channel.
Cheers Keith, glad you got the train on time!
@@BangkokPat Indeed ! Those motorcycle taxis are a godsend in Bangkok ! 👍🤣
One of those so close yet so far away thing.
Another great video Pat, thank for the tour.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks😇
