Interesting video. I met my wife at the Jim Thompson House Museum, where she was working. She was actually 1st runner-up Miss Jim Thompson one year. Lol And to tie in a bit more with your video: Her father was a cinematographer, and helped make movies that were probably shown in those theaters.

I just spent the last month at the Asia Hotel. I recommend it although I didn't know it was haunted LOL. That soi you walked down near the Jim Thompson House was my meeting place for a couple of local friends before we went to the Jim Thompson museum together. Nice story actually. Two local girls helped me figure out how to work the laundry machines in the neighborhood. I treated them to the Jim Thompson museum. We had a grand time
Asia Hotel was a blast! Slept there for a few (days) nights. My son was a toddler at that time and he told me he saw a ghost outside our room in the hallway. Told my son to tell the ghost in the hallway, that the Aircon in our room wasn’t working properly. The next day it was ice cold in the room. 😁 The breakfast buffet during peak time was like a wasp nest. Never seen something like this before. Loved it, but as I said, just for a few days. Bangkok rocks!
Yours are the best detailed videos I’ve seen about Bangkok environs … and I really appreciate that you’ve paid attention to selecting higher quality background music with appropriate moodiness, not the same glitzy dance grooves on most of what I’ve seen. I’ll be following in your footsteps!
Thanks Bob, I like to make the moods match, there's a lot of free music available with TH-cam but there's not a lot of tracks so you end up hearing the same generic music on many videos. It worth going one better and joining a proper service with good tracks!

Hi Pat: Thanks for another great video. I am learning a lot more about Krung Thep; a city I thought I knew fairly well, but you have definitely widened my knowledge. The photos of how things looked in the old days are particularly fun to see compared the the new mall and condo jungle. cheers
Thanks Bob, small area, but a lot to explore down the sois. A lot of cinemas about in those days, wherever they could put them up, they did. Shame about the neighbourhood being torn apart and whoever moves to that condo would have to walk through those sois to get home!
Thank you for another great video !!! First time in Bangkok I walked all the way from Asok to Ban Sue Junction with 50kg trolly. A dozen of parking security guys saluted me. I will never forget
Another good video with photos from old. I used to stay in First Hotel back in the 80's before I move to Thailand, my Singapore mates always stayed in the Asia Hotel. Keep up the good productions. Cheers
It has become a tradition for me to settle down when everyone has gone to bed here and watch a couple of your vlogs. Apologies if I miss a 'like' or a comment once in a while as I can't do it on my TV. Love the music, the photographer's eye, the images, content and your sense of humor. Nice way to end the day. Will be back in BK in November and will try to incorporate some of your insights into our walks. I have thought about pretending to have amazing knowledge of the city to my wife, but my Irish Catholic upbringing should ensure I'll give you proper credit. Should. Cheers & Thank You for the great work!
I'm glad that you did another video of the area near my relative's home, which is north of this intersection on Thanon Phayathai. The 1st time I visited him was back in Christmas/New Year Holiday of 1985-86; this whole area was totally different back then & I still have the pictures that I took at that time. Phayathai Rd. was a divided avenue, all going one way southbound from the Victory Monument & this was a couple of decades before the Sky Train was installed, &, I remember riding across that khlong bridge in my relative's car a few times. I also remember that the roundabout at the Victory Monument didn't have traffic lights to control the traffic flow at that time as well; in a way, it was a smaller version of the infamous Arc De Triomphe Roundabout in Paris, Fr.
I love your channel. Probably the most interesting and thoughtful that I've seen on Thailand if only on BKK. The history. The old pictures & film footage as well your own photography. Very well done. Thank you.
"Hollwood Street!" Back in 1996, I was given the oversight of a weightlifting gym in the other half of "Hollywood Street," that has now been replaced by a condo: that gym was called, "Hollywood Gym." It's amazing that one half of "Hollywood Street" is still around today. Thanks for the video! Great stuff, once again!
@@BangkokPat Yes, it used to connect to Petchaburi Road, as it used to make an "L" shape. Back then, in 1996, there were many rumours floating around that it would be set on fire, so that they could sell it; therefore, it's amazing that part of it is still standing today.
Man I spent some time as a kid in Thailand in the the late 80's. We used to have a place on Soi Attha Wimon we would hang out at now and again. I went back in 2017, 30 years later and the place still had the amazing fragrance you cant forget. The houses are gone but the vibe is still the same. Very peaceful neck of the jungle. These vids really capture the old and the new
Jim Thompson started Thailand's Thai silk cottage industry and I think a. founder of the Bangkok Post,I was in Bangkok over the weekend after 2 years and used the Bts and buses to travel all over Wow there is some serious investment going on there. at the moment construction-wise possibly billions of Baht. keep up the good work Pat great video.
I stayed in the Asia Hotel on my first trip to Bangkok in 1976. I was working in Nepal at the the time and Bangkok was so exciting. The hotel was only about 10 years old then. No evidence of hauntings or mysterious goings on in the night, apart from the obvious ones. In nearly 100 visits since I have never been back to the Ratchathewi area. I will certainly give it a try on my next visit, which I hope will be soon once this Covid nonsense is over. Thanks for a wonderful reminder again of lovely memories.
Been to Siam numerous times, not the kind of place I would hang but I did enjoy the show and history lesson as always. The classical music was a very nice one of the Strauss waltzes which reminds me I need to listen to more classical music to calm my nerves as more and more air pollution drifts south. I can,t see two miles offshore.
Air was awful today in Bangkok, as it was in many other places around Thailand. today. I often put that track in randomly in videos, it suits many scenes!
My first trip to Thailand was in 1998 and I stayed at the Siam City Hotel there in Ratchathewi, thanks for bringing back great memories Pat. I stayed at the same hotel again in 2008 and had a few workouts at Rocky's gym, which was briefly shown in your video here. Thoroughly enjoyed this video, cheers. 👍

Thanks Pat another interesting video, I am late watching, I lost my dog 3 weeks ago, so I wasn’t in the mood. I am watching from the Australian bush as I live off grid, but as a lifelong traveler and a history lover I really love your videos and your presenting style. I also like that you feed the cat’s too, had Siamese growing up but seem to be allergic now, but I still pat them especially when I am traveling in Thailand, and the dog’s though that can be a little fraught with crazy Soi dogs. I see your channel is growing, I hope it continues to grow as your content is always quality. Take care mate.

Looking forward to your video on the Jim Thomson House! I’d been there three times over the years and have enjoyed eating at the restaurant with a large carp pond on the property.
Really enjoyed historic Jim Thompsons house complex, built by the canal to ease transport of silk by by boat. Had a very pricey ice cream there too! Interesting vid.
Pat,Thanks very much for yet another thoroughly absorbing video. They are unique and priceless. For me and probably for many other fans of your videos, it would be very helpful and well appreciated if you could include, in Thai script, the names of the places you cover, in the description box or transcript. Saving them as screen shots would greatly facilitate telling taxi drivers, motorcycle riders, and the locals, one’s intended destination. Just show them the relevant screenshots.
Funny you say that, those brown shoes I been wearing the last 2wks. I had painful knees in the last week and it was down to them. They aren't level on the ground as I walk, a very slight angle leaning forward so it affected my posture. Back to my worn out but comfortable sneakers.
@@BangkokPat Hi Pat, yes I suffered something similar (knees and ankles). I found that a well fitted pair of sneakers provided by a shop that tests your stride addressed the problem
Quality release Pat! Been interested in getting to know this area more, and now i know how to pronounce it correctly so cheers for that! Stayed here on a backpacking trip to BKK in 2018, there is great hostel in the neighbourhood - Diff Hostel, still going as well, I popped in a few weeks back. The Graffiti park looks excellent, NY vibes, as does the bar area, which ive clocked before from the BTS, will definitely head down for beer. Shame about the old cinemas. More Jim's and less Beckhams indeed! Cant wait for the Jim Thompson episode, there is an excellent discussion/investigation on youube covering the theories about his dissappearance!
Just few days a go I stayed at Evergreen Place siam. It's located just behind from Asia Hotel. This area is wander full and cheap. I need 20 minutes walking from Siam Centre, MBK. It's also quite from pratunam market amd Cetral World, What a great location !!
Interesting info about the Asia Hotel, i stayed there for a night in November 2013 in order to visit the Jesada technik Museum. I can't say anything unusual happened though......
Great video, Pat. Very interesting and well researched. I used to like eating at the street restaurants just down from there on Petchaburi road. Good Isaan grub. Used to be very popular.
Once again a very interesting video Pat. Noticed an old Camera shop I once frequented has been demolished along with the adjacent buildings. I thought the Hollywood building quite a few years ago became a place for electronics etc but I could be mistaken due to my old age. Ah well this video shows us the progress of the continuing redevelopment in Krungthep 😉
Thanks Pat. Another great production. To be honest i didnt find Jim Thompsons house very exciting when i visited, the tuk tuk there & back to my hotel was fun though.
Excellent video. I’ve been visiting Thailand for 30 years, and have been around this area quite a bit, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually hung out there. Anyway, I think I might give it a try on my next visit if I have time.
Another interesting watch Pat. Not too familiar with the immediate area, but will look out the C- Co walk next time - there must be somewhere there I can request Sultans of Swing 🤔. You must play a lot of squash, with all those tops - you either take a bag of them with you, or make several visits. I'll go with the latter, as the research is so thorough.
real interesting area. We had until 21 our rehearsal room at the end of Hollywood with Siam Sinfonietta. Been there quite often also for some drinks in the neighbourhood
Wow Pat the old ASIA Hotel stayed there in 1973 it was quite the place back in the day. I would go by it all the time on the BTS but never went back. Nice to see its still there looking good, in fact I was just thinking about that old place . Do you remember the OPERA Hotel near by the First Hotel where all the US Special Forces guys stayed. I stayed there often on for 15 years until it was torn down 2 years ago.
In the early 2000s I used to like to stay in that area because it is near both BTS lines, and canal Klong San Saap fast boats. I stayed next door to Asia Hotel at Evergreen Place Serviced Apts on my first visit to Bangkok. Then Reno Hotel, across the canal from Jim Thompson's house. So convenient.
You had a mural of Ang San Suu Kyi on the wall behind you. The first time I ever went to South East Asia, a very long lime ago, I called in Burma on the way from Calcutta to Bangkok and I changed money and bought noodles at Bogyoke Aung San market in Rangoon. I ate them with the spoon and fork that I carried in my bum-bag. When I finished, I had two hundred people watching me eat noodles with a spoon and fork. I decided it was time to learn to use chop-sticks. So I did.
Great Vblogs. Lived in Bangkok for 5 years and left in 2020. Wish was still there and would have loved to hangout and see Bangkok from a different angle. Coming for 6 weeks in August and would love to meetup.
Just sent you a coffee. Love your channel. I am stuck In London at the moment but lived in LoS for 35 years plus. Good bit of memory lane watching your videos. Please send the link to the Jim Thompson video you said that you would make. That is if you managed to. Thanks.
Yep, spent a good chunk of the past year in the ‘hood, including a hidden wet market with GREAT veg stalls. And as you said…it’s literally right next to Siam, albeit on the “other side.” Sneaky that.
The only way i can see of improving this channel is if we change this Pat guy for Natty from the Thaiger channel Superb content, well narrated, old pictures, good music and a sprinkling of ghosts and cats
Hi Pat The house of rock is a great place if your into metal music Talented musicians Nice vibes during weekend nights Thanks Pat great historian you are.
I've passed by the Jim Thompson House many a time on the boat (usually on the way to Bobae), but never actually stopped to look around. Maybe I will, next time. I probably walked through the area that one time I walked all the way from Bobae Market (crossing the rail lines) back to around Pratunam. That was a long walk..
My first hotel in Bkk was the Siam @ Siam. Crossed the elephant bridge and found the Bangkok City Hotel 800 baht soft opening. A fun game to play around there is spot the farang ! 😃
Thanks for making this Ratchathewi video, been waiting for it! Stayed at the Asia Hotel twice in 2009. In one room, the windows opened onto an internal brick wall! But no ghost sightings! Co-Co Walk is a nice place for food. Ate at a decent Thai restaurant which had absolutely no customers other than myself on a Saturday evening! My favourite BKK cat cafe (Caturday) is also located there. Does the Bang Khrua community, where Jim Thompson found his Thai silk weavers, still exist?
Yes, there is a signboard just near the Asia Hotel indicating the the mosque in Ban Krua. Just walk straight on, there is the mosque and the Muslim community. I stopped by and went in and was invited for some food by the mosque's committee member. Thats the beauty of staying near Phetchbhuri, just walk around and you get to see how the locals live. A few stops by the Bts and well..Sukhumvit is more cosmopolitan.
No problem. Use the Bts to stop at your destination then walk around to see the local side of Bangkok. In April till Jun, the weather can be really hot even for an Asean guy like me so do take precautions. During the lunch break, just watch the office workers eat..thats where you know where the good places are. All the major malls, Big C and LotusS have their food courts so its more cooler with the ac. Food is never too pricey.
Good documentary [as usual]. I often notice that offerings at spirit houses consist of a disproportionate amount of strawberry soft drinks. I wonder what the significance of carbonated strawberry drinks are?

very enjoyable lovely to see the history side of thailand thanks pat
Cheers Philip!
Outstanding video Pat.
Thanks very much Chris.
@@BangkokPat you're on a roll man. like Bowie in the 70s.
10:05 Lemmy!!! Thanks for making my day.
That cutout has been there for as long as I remember!
Interesting info about the Asia Hotel, i stayed there for a night in November 2013 in order to visit the Jesada technik Museum. I can't say anything unusual happened though......
I used to live here. Miss this place a lot!!!
Great video, Pat. Very interesting and well researched. I used to like eating at the street restaurants just down from there on Petchaburi road. Good Isaan grub. Used to be very popular.
Ey I think I know the area a bit where you were filming 😏 haha cheers mate! 😉
Cheers mate! Yeah, same place as you! Had good fun around this area.
Thank you Pat. A great video!
Cheers Bill!
Another top drawer informative video Pat thank you !
Thanks Graham!
Wow, The Asia Hotel look nicer than when I was there few years ago...
It was depressing in the past, that's for sure!
I enjoyed it Pat
Great to hear that!
The Hollywood building was an IT electronics place for a while, this area is yet another one that is slowly being eaten alive by developers.
Thanks for another great video.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Easter, which starts next week.
Cheers, thank you.
Great VDO and huge of informations of the city of angles.
I have found your canal accidentally. And I stuck.
Good to hear that! Thank you.
Another good video Pat ! 🙏
Thanks a lot Jon.
Another area that’s redeveloping …
We have been to the Jim Thomson House, well worth a look.
Great to hear that mate. Thanks.
Loving the messy cable shots. that Kitten looked like WTF did you really just do that !
🙏 A new area worth exploring. Cheers
Definitely! And it's not too far to walk around!
Good one Pat: It is obvious that you are totally preoccupied by "Cats & Klongs" .....I'll stay tuned....!!!
Never the back button but more button always interesting and learn something in the process way better than school.
nice one Pat
Thank you very much Brian!
Some very cool backstreets…might need to make a visit when I’m over in May.
It's a nice stroll not too far off the beaten track. I had a lot of fun walking around there.
I don't know the area very well although touched it many, many times..Always more to learn about Bkk..Thxs Pat..well done.
real interesting area.
Nice area, I was hanging around there around 2002/3 because it was the nearest BTS to Pantip Plaza, where I regularly went.
Geez your videos are good 👍👏
Thanks Dave!
So I did.
Night time camera is fantastic!
I was planning a visit to Jim Thompson's house this Friday but I would rather wait till I see your video first.
Not sure if they allow filming inside but I'll take photos and of course give the full story.
@@BangkokPat if they don't allow tripods but otherwise allow video, I'd be happy to assist.
The only way i can see of improving this channel is if we change this Pat guy for Natty from the Thaiger channel
Superb content, well narrated, old pictures, good music and a sprinkling of ghosts and cats
Love a good ghost story 👻
Hi Pat
The house of rock is a great place if your into metal music
Talented musicians
Nice vibes during weekend nights
Thanks Pat great historian you are.
The 60s architecture really cool. Reminds me of Vietnam.
My first hotel in Bkk was the Siam @ Siam. Crossed the elephant bridge and found the Bangkok City Hotel 800 baht soft opening. A fun game to play around there is spot the farang ! 😃
There were a few foreigners about who were staying in hotels nearby, the nightlife is 90% Thai. Asia hotel was very busy.
@@BangkokPat So you know Spot the Farang ! 😅
@@norhishamothman4152 Many thanks for the helpful tip! Must visit the next time I'm in BKK!
The factory is still right in the middle of it!
I like your video a then & now!
I try to do many! Sometimes not so easy....but fun to make.
Good documentary [as usual]. I often notice that offerings at spirit houses consist of a disproportionate amount of strawberry soft drinks. I wonder what the significance of carbonated strawberry drinks are?
