Quick correction: for the computer science master you're gonna have to pay for 4 semesters (4x6000€), so the total amount for both degrees would be 42.000€!

oh wow, as an international student alumni of TUM - this is actually quite sad. The promise of free education in Germany was really the biggest reason why I moved here. Having spent tens of thousands studying in the US & Australia, I will never forget seeing my TUM semester bill showing a big fat 0 for tuition and just
I studied in Baden-württemberg for 12 Semesters, paid a solid €20.220, and i’m still Jobless at the moment.
Hey, nice videos you make! I'm also currently studying at the HM! Before that i did my bachlelors degree in Regensburg at the OTH. And i completely agree with you: Rankings don't matter. Some study programs there are top ranked and they love to advertise with that. But our professors there nearly forced us to give our program good grades in those ranking surveys. One professor came to us and talked 20 minutes about how that's for our own best. "you are only damaging yourselves if you rate your university badly. companies look at this and it gets you better jobs. these surveys are not the place to express your displeasure". I thought that was absolutely pathetic!

What about scholarships? Good luck to you. Besides, there are a lot of other German Universities in Germany that do not charge international student fees. As for Bachelor-level degree programs, it honestly does not matter at what university you study. Those rankings are mostly based on the research output of that university / faculty.. It is not like in the US where you pay for the university name.
Still if you get accepted by TUM for free, it will be necessary to have to spend for all of the application processes which would cost around 13 000 euros. Do you think that increasing money a bit for degrees is going to make any sense?

I think it is legitimate to charge international students with higher fees. The TUM is a world-class university. If you were to go to Harvard you'd be paying like more than 20k a year or more. You pay even more tuition at a no-name University. 2000 Euros per semester is peanuts compared to other universities. Why should a foreigner get higher education for free here in Germany? The German people pay for university through a horrendous sum of taxes. Also, in almost every country it is common practice to have international students pay higher tuition fees.

@@hamidmohaddes2774 it is nuts to think that studying in Europe as foreigner should be free. You guys live in a fantasy world. It is not our problem that your countries have shitty education and research.
The TUHH is heavily supported by the state. It has around 7,000 students, and research and development are the main focus. For instance, there is a project that is actively working on the development of a quantum computer. Additionally, DESY is also located in Hamburg, known for its particle accelerator. While the north may not host the headquarters of BMW, Siemens, or Mercedes, there are companies with global potential in and around Hamburg as well. Examples include HELM, Jungheinrich, and Lufthansa etc. Let's not forget that Hamburg is home to a massive Airbus facility.
I currently study Mech.E at TUHH. It is a small university but with very good Prof/tutor to student ratio with many office hours and meetings to discuss and do practice Problems. The only downside is, that there are not so many degrees. Only like 15-20 different ones. I wish they add degrees like aerospace etc. so students can choose from a large variety.
That is actually absurd. Why charge hefty fees from "3rd world country" students when you know that their economic situation is much worse than someone living in Germany or the EU? As somebody mentioned that if you were to apply to Harvard you would have to pay 20k and blah blah..Brother TUM isn't Harvard and imposing the fees isn't even my biggest problem.
You want to be Harvard, you treat everyone equally. We third world students already pay about 50-60k just to be able to reach Germany and survive there(especially bugger cities like Munich) and everything is quite challenging for us as outsiders..The accommodation, food and the air fare all are hefty enough to cause a dent in our pocket. And I can't forget the cost of Studienkolleg and/or Goethe B2/C1, Uni-Assist, VISA, APS and all. You "First World" citizens think that these are all peanuts for money, but don't forget that the 1000 or so euros required to apply for just the language proficiency certificates is most of times the pay for workers in a quarter in these third world countries
If you want to impose hefty fees on the grounds of being the best technical uni in Germany, do that for all the students. Or else, give a tax waiver to international students in the future when they are working in Germany. I hear Germany requires about 400k skilled workers, then why make it even more difficult to reach Germany? Remember that not all the people in the world can have the privilege of paying 20000 euros for studying and that's why Germany was a haven for international students who wanted to integrate and participate in the German system and work towards building a better Germany in return of the favour of graciously providing us free education? Not anymore, eh?

I don't understand why most foreign students are absolutely crazy about TUM. Yes, this University is ranked one of the highest, if not the highest in Germany.
In general, rankings are super subjective and misleading as the rankings are mostly based on the university's reputation. How do you measure the quality of a University? Also, the quality of a University is determined through the research output of one prospective faculty. Some departments produce more research, some less. For example: if a university publishes a lot in the field of literary studies in top journals, but on the other hand does not reach the research output level in let's say biology, is said to be a good university in general since other departments cancel out the low-quality research of the biology department.
It is always best to check the quality of the degree program you wish to pursue. Another point is, that it does not really matter from where you got your undergraduate (Bachelor) degree from, since there is not a big difference between universities.
Most universities follow very similar curriculums. In Germany, it is not that important what university you graduated from. As long as you have a degree in the specific field, all is good (as far as Bachelor's degrees are concerned).
The real difference in quality (research) becomes apparent beyond the Bachelor level. For those who want to specialize (Master, PhD) it is worth looking for the right university. That is where the rankings can be helpful. If we hear the word "ranking" we can be easily influenced as we believe that these numbers are the ultimate truth. Well, we can look at the numbers and look at the overall score and think "Wow, 10/10! This university must be awesome". There are so many rankings out there and every single one provides you with different scores. I think it is worth questioning the methods that were used to determine that score of the ranking. That is to say, depending on what you are focusing on whilst doing a survey on universities, the score outcome can vary greatly. Some universities are simply overrated (ex. Havard, Ivy League) in the end it comes down to a business where you pay for the brand. So many people are tricked into believing in brands. If you have a diploma from Harvard all other degrees from any other institution are "worthless". That is so incorrect. Just because you haven't heard of this university does not mean that it is bad.
A little fact about German universities and excellence in research: most research happens in research institutes which are partly affiliated with a university (cf. Max-Planck Institue, Fraunhofer Institute, etc.) this explains for why most of the German universities do not appear on world rankings.

TUM has some courses taught in english thats why it attracted many international students.

Either you enroll or not, that class will still be held even if it has 1 student.
So for people getting angry why foreign students can study for free in germany, it is better to just fill the class which is already paid by the government by people who wants to learn and be educated. I think the people's taxes will be in much better future if its paying for a class of 30 students that will be able to help the economy in the future than 5 students per semester.
I mean it was about time it happened you feel me? If we wanna go abroad to study, even within the EU, tuition fees are quite hefty and often times it´s unavailable to germans cus the state is quite harsh when it comes to decide who´s allowed an "allowance".
I really never understood this, I mean most of all come from countries that barely afford to pay the lowest 😥 i have being saving for two years and I am not even able to pay my household if studying in germany not even for a semester and now I also have to pay this unaffordable tuition fees 😢 i mean, 6,000 Euros is 120,000 MXN. I gain 28,000 MXN monthly, without taxes is just 18,000 MXN, living with the minimum I save monthly about 9,000 MXN..., that is approximately what i can save in one year (102,000 if i don't get sick and don't buy anything else for me) 🤧 and then the household?? NO I CAN AFFORD IT NO MORE 😭😭😭

LMU has plans to introduce fees. I study there and I’m in a Fachschaft and they asked us if we would support it.

I dont think so, if they are going trough with it they are still in the planning phase so Ill doubt itll come before 2025 WS. Theyve asked us like 2 months ago and the majority voted for yes. But I have to add that our studying field is very specific and because of that we are actually admitted to both TUM and LMU. Since we have to pay our fees trough TUM it doesnt really matter to our future erstis since they have to pay none the less. But we mostly support the idea in general.@@maxyoko
Yeah don’t cry about it! They are still German universities primarily meant for German students. The problem with international students is that they are increasing too much and that will affect German studs in a negative way. More international students mean less places for German students. That will lead to some programs and degrees getting more difficult to enroll into. Everyone wants to study in Europe if it means that native students getting less places in universities, the requirements for international students will increase whether financially or via requirements.

Hey Max, do you know if this also applies in the TUM Hielbronn Campus? The website for courses in the TUM Munich campus mentions the fees whereas for the Heilbronn campus it does not.

Maybe it is to counter international students who come to study but leave after completing their master degrees and support their own non EU / non european countries... and work against the EU in the worst case...

As I mentioned in the video, even if you complete the Studienkolleg at TUM, you need to pay the fees
Still with this change, some master programs do not have tuition fees charged and are free, so we cannot generalize this

If we already enrolled prior to the Winter semester of 2024/2025 as international students at TUM, do we also fall into the tuition-free zone for the entire duration of the degree program? Meaning we just need to pay the normal semester contribution fee for upcoming semesters.
If you enroll in TUM before the winter semester 2024/25, you are safe

Max I don't fking know what to do, I've been admited for the Master in chemical biotechnology this year and is great because it was what I was looking for, but with this changes I don't know in terms of investment return , if I risk to paid the tuition fees or better pospone My plans one year later to learn and certificate My Germán and try to apply for another master un biotechnology in any of the universitities thst you mentioned or in a univeristy of applied sciences. Hi, I just want to ask, I was an AuPair for 1 year in Germany and also had FSJ for 1,5 year. I'm rn at my Ausbildung for 3 years/6 semester, and if I'm done with my Ausbildung or got my Fachkraft degree from my Berufschule, is it count as finishing my 6 semester at full German education system? and at the time I finished, I already live in Germany for more than 5 years. But during my stay here in Germany I didnt have a real "Job" bcs everything I done doesnt count as a "Job" here. I curently live in Baden Württemberg which the law already implemeted long ago, I'm planning after finished my Ausbildung to study in Nortrhein Westfallen. But tbh I enjoy to live here in BW, and if I can study here without tuition fees, I can work with my current Arbeitsgeber as a "Aushilfe" for a part time and I can still stay at my current Apartement from my Arbeitsgeber. :") Searching for an Apartement here in Germany is hard enough to make don't want to move from BW. Maybe that is another idea for next video, many student have a problem to looking for accomodation to live here.

Everybody should have a right for free education? Maybe, but everybody should also have a right to keep enough of their hard earned money for a decent live. Which is not the case in Germany due to excessive taxation. Why do I have to pay with my excruciating tax load to give people from other countries a free education? While the other country does not even offer free education for their own citizens, so that the working people there can enjoy a low tax burden? Sorry, but I have zero acceptance for this cherry picking and bigotry.
A lot of German taxes, not only for education, spent for useless purposes. I rather feel like middle class/poor pay for rich people priviledges. Its so well hidden that majority doesn't know about it

Binnen Europa mag je overal instromen. Maar ik zie er nut van totaal niet in om in Duitsland in te stromen. Je kunt beter voor TU Delft gaan dan TUM.

Je kunt namelijk zelf kiezen welke richting je wilt specialiseren. Maar als je zelf deels Duits bent kan ik anderzijds wel begrijpen dat studeren in Duitsland aantrekkelijk kan zijn. Maar onthoud wel dat als het gras aan het overkant groener dat dan niet perse zo hoeft te zijn.

Just a general answer here as I don´t know which unis have a englisch only program, but if you seek practical knowledge most of the big universities here won´t be to your liking, but the universities of applied scieneces might be good for you(Fach Hochschule in german), I´m currently at the Fach Hochschule Aachen after I spent a semester at RWTH Aachen, there it was just way to theoretical for my liking.

I just want to clear one thing if one family member not parent but like sibling is in Germany and working for more than 3 years also have PR then the relative who wants to enroll as a student should have to pay tuition fee or exempt from it..? If the student is of non EU but blood relative of German PR holder.????

Compared to other Universities (UK, USA, Australia, etc.) the tuition fees at TUM are peanuts. Also, there are a lot of other Universities in Germany that don't charge international tuition fees. Good luck with your German dream.
