  • Using FreeCAD to create an animated gear assembly in the Assembly 4 workbench with video file or gif output. We will create two gears of different sizes using the part design and mesh these together in an assembly workbench. We will the set these up to allow them to be animated without any need of python code. we finally output this to an avi file.

    Verry nice, a special for the simple gear parts sometimes (most off the time the project are to long), so there is more time for animation

    Had some issues during the import into assembly due to not fully selecting the LCS in Parent option. easy to overlook. Many commands require definite instructions to & from so to speak. I slow the tutorials to 50% so I can keep up. 8:43 when the Gear2 is imported My gear didn't drop into the XY Plane when the LCS Origin was selected. I adjusted the Z Trans to -10 and fixed it. Darren any reason? Once again small beer but it slows a New user like Me down until I figure it out? Anyway good practice figuring it out for myself I suppose. Gotta love animation, I also notice subtle difference in appearance i.e. On the Pinion gear my Co Ordinate Crosses are buried in the gear yet the larger gear they are as per Darrens, I presume these are possibly individual user settings or preferences or something to do with the offset I adjusted manually?

    I wish there was an actual solid simulation (where the objects actually push against each other). Do you (or anybody) else know if freecad can do that ? Or maybe there is an opensource tool I could use for that ?

    Very good info. How did you come up with the number 14? Just a guess or a calculation of some sort?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It was a lucky guess for the offset. Trust me I nearly fell off my seat when that happened.

    I slowed the animation but see it slows down in the video anyway. Also see it is better to centre the assy on the screen before saving the video.

    Hi MJS, thanks for your helpful tutorial. I'm using version 0.20.2 and can't find the animation export? The "Animate Assembly" display also looks different and there is no Save button!
    Can you please help me? Thank you. CM2000
    Sorry, it's done. I made an update in the Addon Manager and now is possible. ;-)

    Last time I did do blender to animate a gearing. That was a while ago and CAD sketcher looked promising. But I am a bit afraid of blender, once you get good at it it will take self control to not go on a tangent to make the perfect pitch presentation. At the moment I prefer FreeCADs traditional CAD workflow though.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand where you come from with blender. There is so much to learn and way to many keys to remember for my liking. I do use Blender but I spend most of my time in CAD.

    Hi Darren, When attempting to export I get a "OpenCV not installed error" I appreciate not your issue but can you suggest where I can educate myself and resolve. I've tried Forum FreeCAd and waiting on responses. I'm a New Linux user also so the learning curve is steep. I've tried the FreeCAD Forum but it seems there are a lot of people with varing opinions but no real answers? Regards, RW

    Thanks for this very informative vide0 (like always) 17:51 My question is concerning adding your "Lucky Guess" of 14 to "mesh" the gears, what made you come up with or even to know to add an offset in the first place and what are you off-setting, "X" "Y" or "Z"... or what else? I really need to know how you do this, is it from other CAD programs? It really makes me feel hopeless, because without a formula or knowing where to go to find the formula, it quickly goes from working in sound Engineering practices to just fidgeting with buttons... LOL "Please Help" with some background of where to turn to for answers? Thanks

      It is actually 360/(13*2). Because 2nd gear has 13 teeth and you need to shift its phase half of a tooth, to correct the deliberate mistake of the beginning.

    I have a question, your cursor has a tail & pointed head. My cursor is a triangle with rounded tips. Makes it hard to precisely choose a line or point. I’ve looked all through Freecad & the inter web & can’t find a solution. I’m using the app image on Linuxmint Lmde. Do you happen to know how to change it?
