    Spatial Awarness = Proprioception,
    Pain = Noiception.

      Burnie and the others mixed up sensory organs with senses. That's the fundamental flaw. We have 5 main sensory organs and they produce senses based on shared inputs.

    Its 7 years later and I just took a psycology test that taught me about proprioception. Which is basically awareness in space and the ability to do something like touch your nose without your eyes being open.

    Touch is about the repulsion effect of atoms being in close proximity to one another. Temperature is related to the energy transfer between atoms

    The thing is, there are more than 5 senses but they are subsets of the major five. For example, sense of balance, fullness, temperature, pain and itch are in essence just touch but are still technically "senses".

    actually the sense of smell is good for a couple of reasons. how we enjoy various things can be partially due to the mixing of different senses, for example touch, taste, and smell. also smell is necessary in situations such as this, when you are in a room with a gas leak, so you can smell the escaping gases

  • @hardthinking

    Medically saying there are 5 senses only can be dangerous.
    CIP - a condition where someone can't feel any pain, can still feel touch.
    Imbalance - people who struggle to stand correctly can still feel and touch things. We can train a sense of balance by standing on one leg having eyes closed.
    He uses circular logic to justify his point, by his logic there is only one sense: touch. Photons "touch" the receptors in your eyes, hearing is your bones touching a membrane, smelling is chemicals touching your olfactory receptors, etc.

    i agree with burnie that a sense is an arbitrary idea instead of an innate fact, but then if that’s true he can’t argue that gravity isn’t a sense. a sense is whatever we decide it is. if scientists agree to classify 30 senses or whatever then there are 30 or whatever senses, because it’s whatever we decide

      I read the first "sense" which is fullness to know this is wrong. The reason you feel full is because you eat enough to make your stomach starts to stretch. That's where bloating comes from.

    • @kered13
      @kered13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +insertusernamehere That doesn't explain how you feel hungry though. Being hungry is not just a matter of having an empty stomach, there are internal mechanisms that recognize when you need to eat and trigger a unique sensation that cannot be explained by any of the other senses.

  • @tautestbeef911
    @tautestbeef911 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think both are equally right and wrong. Gavin is right that there may be more than five senses, like a sense of balance suggested by Miles. But, saying a sense of temperature is a seperate sense from touch is completely stupid, since being able to FEEL hot or cold would be a subset of TOUCH, not the other way around. And, while Gav did have a point, I'm on Burnie's side, since saying there's over thirty senses doesn't seem right, especially when you start doubling up. Now, there may be more than five senses, Balance would be in there. But thirty, no.

    • @bonbonbam6188

    all I'm gonna say is that ancient Greeks divided things in the natural world, and assigned them to God's, that was proven wrong. just because you made something up, doesn't mean it's right. I think that we should divide things up based on how they happen in the natural world. like senses should be divided by how the brain deals with the information you get from the outside world.

    • @jaydensmith174
      @jaydensmith174 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the grand scheme of things, we can just call it all consciousness. The "abstract" way senses are described now isn't based in science completely, because if it was it would at least say that taste and smell are the same. But instead we have this useless list of things that were determined true by people in the past who were not as educated as we are today, but people still have faith in it somehow. Kinda like religion, yeah I went there

    Gavin is awesome, but about our senses he is wrong. There are 5 senses! The rest like a sense of temperature, sense of pain is a sub-sense of touch. Sense of balance is part of our sense of hearing. Sense of taste helps us distinguish the difference in food.
    I like how Gavin is philosophical about things, but this time he is wrong! And I am tired of these non-scientific people who just randomly agrees with him, and look at any old site. OR trys to "experience" these senses and say he is right when he is not.
    Also at 15:30 Gavin even says it himself! He just says any old shit and you idiots go on saying he is right with no PROFF!! He just have you people to bother the shit out of Burnie about it.

    • @jonathandavidson410
      @jonathandavidson410 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pain isn't a sub-sense of touch, there are specific nerves that sense pain and only pain, just like there are nerves that sense touch and only touch. People can be born without a sense of pain, but they can still feel objects. So for example if I had no sense of pain, I could touch a hot frying pan, register that it's a frying pan, but not register the fact that I'm burning my fingers.

    • @LDViB
      @LDViB 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, knowledge of the human body. I only put that because there is always that one idiot who will keep discussing about it. Didn't think there would be a person who would actually know about nerves.

  • @xTheFak3OG

    There are 5 senses. No argument. Tenperature-you feel it, gravity-you feel it, spacial awareness- no clue what that even means, Gavin is confusing sense with SENSATION. As are the people who agree.

    • @bootlegdouglas
      @bootlegdouglas 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      x THE FAK3 OG You're absolutely wrong, not because there are more than five senses, but because there is an argument. There isn't a scientific consensus on the definition of a sense or the number of senses we have. People can't just go around asserting that their opinion is correct. Actual neurologists know that, which is why they publish papers on how many senses they have determined there are, so that their peers can check their work and come to a consensus.

    • @kered13
      @kered13 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +x THE FAK3 OG It's very easy to study how these different things are experienced and find that they are experienced in completely different ways. IE, temperature and balance are not the same as touch. They trigger different neurons and are processed differently in the brain. Balance, in particular, is measured by fluids in your ear. Remove those fluids (or damage the appropriate neurons) and you lose your sense of balance, even though you can still feel the weight of your limbs.

    • @tom118119
      @tom118119 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      By spacial awareness he means that if you close your eyes you still know where objects will be, for instance if you close your eyes and stick your arm out you will know where your hand is.
