I’m so glad! I know I was EXTREMELY intimidated, especially since I didn’t let myself watch any other videos about it beforehand..... so I’m glad it was helpful! Thanks a ton for watching and the nice comment :-)
Well thanks! I really appreciate that 😀 if you watch the gameplay video keep those Klingon subtitles turned on.... I made a lot of dumb first-time-player mistakes 🤦♂️ but I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
Just got the game. Waiting for broken token organizer to ship tomorrow, and all my character minis are being painted spoiler-free And I pick them up in 5 days. These first videos are really helpful, thank you.
Hey Tom, at 1:18 , where are the 2 tokens which look like lava on the "top" and one "bottom" has a wood floor and the other is a fountain? I followed the official BT packing to this game but some how missed that? or they didnt mention them 2? idk..
@@TomTeachesGames ops, meant to say yeah 6 sided. They dont match any thing else tho that ive seen, except the 3-hex combo ones with trees/lava looking stuff (Idk if it really is lava, just firey)
Yeah, there are lots of those that I know in one of those trays I just have an annoying hodge-podge of tokens with that shape. I just search through them as needed.
Interesting to see how you set things up, and the broken token insert in action. My main difference is that I use dice for enemy HP, which might also work well on camera. Anyway, I'm about 8 scenarios into a 2-player game, but also thinking about some solo plays, to go down some unused roads.
d6s and d8s are usually good enough, although it's not long before d10s (and even a d12 + d6) is needed. Also, as you might have already noticed, you only need the monster sleeve with 10 divisions rarely, since most monsters only come in groups of 6. That makes things less fiddly.
Don’t judge me.... I didn’t even notice the difference in divisions until I read this then went and looked... 😂 Sometimes I feel like I’m less smart than I should be.
Correct.... I think I knew that and said it? Or maybe mispoke... but yeah. In that video I put the cards in the discard pile and end up picking them up after resting. By the way, love the icon!
I just pre-purchased Gloomhaven from Amazon, looking forward to it arriving near the end of the month. I'm researching storage solutions right now and this is the first time I'm seeing The Broken Token organizer. Wondering what made you go with this organizer and how you are liking it so far. It's pricey, so I was wondering if you considered cheaper alternatives (like the Y.A.S.S. solution on BGG) and, if so, why you ultimately went this route. Thanks and thanks for these vids. Great content and a great way to feed my lust for all things Gloomhaven while I await my shipment!
No worries! Haha :D I'm happy to answer any other questions you've got about this insert, or others. Or I can provide a link where I did most of my reading.
I guess I'd still be interested in knowing why you opted for the pricier options over a more DIY approach. Also, I'm not sure what insert the 2e Kickstarter came with, but I watched Isaac's unboxing of the retail version (the one I bought) and it comes with a hard plastic insert that looks like it accommodates a lot. So I guess I'm just interested in your thoughts on the matter. I'm not a stranger to organizing game parts, having robust X-Wing and Imperial Assault collections, but I'm interested in your thoughts. Thanks!
Well, at the time I researched and was looking around (this was probably around July or August?) I didn’t see any do-it-yourself options (let alone any that grabbed my attention). I am certainly no stranger to Plano boxes, and I’d guess I use them in about half of my games - but this game is seriously SO massive, I just didn’t see that cutting it. I too was surprised to see a plastic insert in the bottom of the second printing when I got it my copy. And it will keep a couple of things organized, but mostly just the very bottom layer. So, after all was said and done, knowing the size of the box and the volume of the components ( MOST of which do NOT get used in regular gameplay) I wanted some kind of a system that, when I opened the box, has the most frequently used pieces right there at the top. That’s what this insert does for me. The tokens used every game are at the top. And all of the boxes and things that may or may not get used from game to game stay near the bottom. And it has worked very well for me in that sense.
I don't think Solo bumps you a level I thought it just made the monsters and traps one harder. You should use the solo variant table in the middle of the rule book. Please correct me if I am wrong, anyone.
No, you are 100% right. And I thought I corrected that in the subtitles, but may have forgotten. I do correct that in subsequent videos. Good catch! I thought you just adjusted levels in the back of the book, but yeah, just some of the columns adjust.
Oh maybe I missed the subtitles. I am multitasking while watching. These videos are great. I love their length and pacing . I will watch one or two more then the videos will be where I am and I will stop as to not spoil.
lol yeah un punching the tokens would be a 1hr vid ; I'm interested to see what all the commotion is people say it'd already their number 1 game and haven't even played it lol
That’s a good point! There is a hype train right now for sure.... and yup. It took me over 2 hours to punch out and organize everything and get it into that organizer. And my table looked like it was hit by a tornado during the process. There was no way I was recording/reliving that nightmare.
A 2 hr punch out vid would be an esoteric interesting vid like one of those 10 hr looped vids people used to upload lol I think I shot a punch out vid with D&D Castle Ravenloft a couple years ago but said um why am I doing this. CR only took 15 minutes I think. but yes then you're left with a lot of cardboard pieces. WotC should have included a sheet for their board games to tell you how to use their nice plastic insert. I made up my own sheet to know how many cards and tiles and tokens fit where. I use X-wing minis ziploc bags to store smaller pieces in other games for quicker setup and 'recovery'. I don't know if it's Gloomhaven but there's one game out there that comes with such a sheet to tell you where to put everything back.
Futurama's Hypno Toad Unboxing Video ; I actually do have an Xmas fireplace DVD. it has a dog barking feintly in the background drives me up the wall lol otherwise they're like screen savers for HDTV
Like, pull it lower? I can probably do that. I’ve been considering it to see Norman and Crystale (accent on the ‘a’) a little better.... it might end up being map-specific....?
I've just bought Gloomhaven. Thankyou for this video and all your others man. Gotta say it's pretty disappointing that a $250 game couldn't include something like the $5 worth of broken token cardboard (RRP $80+) to make the game closer to playable. Having to spend additional money after such a huge outlay is kind of like the table top gaming equivalent of massive video game in-game purchases, without which the game is unplayable. Sorry to whinge here, just struggling to get my head around my new purchase with my 16yo son. Couldn't do it without these vids, the instructional vids at the end of the QR link in the rule book are utterly useless.
You’re absolutely welcome! I mean, I clearly messed up several times.... but that’s just the nature of this game. But I’m so glad you felt like it was helpful! And definitely - the amount of stuff in there.... it is absolutely tough to buy an insert... BUT! I might have good news...? I know several people who have put the small terrain pieces in Plano boxes. The various decks of cards in bags....? BUT, I just made these free DIY boxes for your monster figures and cards. Might be worth a look to see if they would work for you...? Come look and see if you like them before buying anything... sites.google.com/view/tomteaches/home
@@TomTeachesGames Thanks man :) I was just thinking yesterday that a printable template would be cool thing for someone to create, with perforation or simple fold lines to facilitate a DIY storage solution. Greatly appreciate your videos man. This is the first game of this type I've ever bought, and suffice to say it's a little intimidating! For now I just have everything laid out on the lounge room floor while myself and my 16yo son try to navigate our way through Black Barrow. Many people have made Gloomhaven videos, but yours is by far the best. We've essentially had your play through videos playing on the tv while we work our way through Black Barrow, treating it as a tutorial. For the 100th time, thank you!!
Hey, you are 100% welcome! I seriously don’t even know how to take the compliment - I really appreciate it. I know I make a million mistakes, so sometimes I get self conscious that my videos just expose how dumb I can be.... But ANYTIME you have a question or something I can help with, just let me know! The biggest piece of advice I can give when jumping into the monster that is Gloomhaven is: just have fun. You could get so bogged down by checking every single rule as you go - but I say, when possible, make a judgment call for whatever makes thematic sense and sounds fun, then go explore the real rule after. There are 100 things happening and it’s so easy to mess up or get lost in not-knowing.... so as long as you know you’ve got the basic stuff down, just have fun. 😀
“You know I struggle” says Tom.
Tom. You are doing great. I am very entertained. And you are easy to follow along. Keep up the good work.
Hahaha. Thanks man! I do struggle, but will continue to do my best to be follow-along-able! This recording thing is so pressurey!
This is super helpful. It makes the prospect of starting Gloomhaven far less intimidating. Great video. Thanks!
I’m so glad! I know I was EXTREMELY intimidated, especially since I didn’t let myself watch any other videos about it beforehand..... so I’m glad it was helpful! Thanks a ton for watching and the nice comment :-)
Excellent! One of the best, if not the best video, I have watched explaining how to setup a scenario and getting ready to play.
Well thanks! I really appreciate that 😀 if you watch the gameplay video keep those Klingon subtitles turned on.... I made a lot of dumb first-time-player mistakes 🤦♂️ but I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
Stellar production Tom, informative and entertaining, thank you!
Thanks a million! Nice of you to say!
Gloomhaven just arrived today and this video was such a good help! Thanks!
I’m so glad man! I really appreciate you taking the time to say something 😀 I want to hear how your first scenario goes!

I'm so glad! And I'm way jealous about your painted minis..... Check back in and let me know how your first session(s) go!

Dice!!!!! That is an GREAT idea!!!!! I’m gonna seriously consider that.... maybe my Aeon’s End HP dice would work well here....

best Gameplay on yt !
Well dang! Thank you so much!
Discard is not permanent. Just start the scenario with 2 cards discarded at the beginning.
Correct.... I think I knew that and said it? Or maybe mispoke... but yeah. In that video I put the cards in the discard pile and end up picking them up after resting.
By the way, love the icon!

I am getting used to your over head shots. Try a slight angle on the next one maybe. Then we can decide. 😀
I’ll see what I can do. Not sure I can angle it too much... But we’ll see.
Like I do with most games, I'm going to replace the health tokens with little red chessex wargame dice ☺
That sounds like an awesome plan to me!
Symbol says to "tear the card". Um, no...
😂 A freaking men. I mean, I couldn’t even bring myself to do that with pandemic legacy. I kept all of those cards in their own special baggie 😂
