      Ronnie, the great thing about the full grain leather rebinding is that even if you read your Bible every single day, it stands up well over time. Honestly, the cover still looks about as good as it did when it was freshly rebound. It's pretty amazing. I agree with what you said though. It's unfortunate that so many Christians read their Bibles so infrequently that it never needs to be rebound.

      Agreed. The overall cost is certainly not cheap, but that price does reflect the high quality of their workmanship. My Bible is still holding up great now in April 2020, and to be honest, it still looks and feels as new as when I first got it back from Leonard's!

I'd do it all over again.

    The reason you see the perimeter on the outside cover is because they didn't put a leather liner and it's a paper paste down on the inside. A leather liner on the inside instead of a paper paste down would have eliminated that pronounced raised edge on the outside perimeter

    • @JDW-
      @JDW-  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? Because even if you put leather inside, you still have "fold-over." It's the fold-over that is creating the "bump" round the rim of the front and back cover. From what recall that I was told by Leonard's, some leathers they use allow them to scrape off the excess so a fold-over looks less like a bump, but I think they told me that wasn't available on the particular leather I chose. There's a book-binder's terms for that "scraping" (thinning out) but I forgot what it is.

    • @delgadorebinds987
      @delgadorebinds987 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JDW- it's called "skiving" it does thin out the leather and allows for a cleaner look and makes it easier to do the corner work. It's hard to do fold overs and corners if the leather is too thick, but the reason that "bump" is there is because there is no leather liner to "match up" to the edges of the fold over. It's just a paper material that is glued to the other side/ inside of the cover which allows the fold over to protrude onto the other side. I line match my Bibles where the cover and the liner match up or butt up to each other that gives it a clean smooth look on the cover. I see that "bump" on most "paste down" lined Bibles because even with a "fold over" WITH a leather liner you will not have that bump around the rim of the cover...that bump around the rim of the cover is indicative to paste down liners

    • @JDW-
      @JDW-  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@delgadorebinds987 Thank you for explaining. I looked through my old 2015 emails with Leonard's Books, and I see that I tried to work with them to eliminate the rim bump, but this is what they told me at the time...
      "Our covers will have that because yes, that's the folded edge. The way to reduce that would be to skive the edges, but we don't do that, sorry. I do think the River Grain goatskin doesn't have that problem. We don't line the insides of most of our covers with anything but standard leatherette (full pastedown end pages) or sometimes silk moire (also full pastedown end pages). Some other places may do skiving, but ... we just don't."

    • @delgadorebinds987
      @delgadorebinds987 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JDW- unless someone has a skiving machine, skiving is definitely a "skill" in leather work and takes a steady hand and time to accomplish good results. I just wanted to kind of explain why that bump is there, but you have a beautiful rebind. Your choice for the cover was nice... I like it

    The reason why you can't roll it up is because the inside of the cover is paper (like you said), if it were leather lined on the inside, it would feel much softer and would roll up like other videos show. If you ever get it rebound, or rebind a different Bible, you may want to think about getting the least expensive leather, and have it leather lined, instead of picking a more expensive leather and having it paste down with paper.
    I starting to learn how to rebind, it's not too hard if you have the time to learn.

    • @JDW-
      @JDW-  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but a leather-lined cover would have cost more too, which is one reason I did not opt for it. Yet another reason I choose the "thicker cowhide" from Leonard's is because it would result in the thickest cover overall - thicker than a leather-lined cover. A study Bible is quite large, and I wanted a fairly thick cover, in hopes such would be more durable and last longer.
      As to rebinding myself, I live in Japan and have fewer options to source leathers. Furthermore, I lack time and desire to do the job myself. Being a perfectionist, it would be a source of great stress to me. Better leave such to the experts who have experience, I say.

      You can see the great work of Leonard's. They are pricey but worth it. If you have a Bible with no notes, then it is probably not worth it. The reason to get a Bible rebound is either because it has notes inside or it was gifted from a family member and has sentimental value.

      Thank you for your comment. The only reason I’m not made a follow up video is because the cover looks almost 100% the same as it did when I got it back from Leonard’s. This thing is amazingly durable despite my reading my Bible every single day. I don’t even notice fold marks. It’s nothing like the cheap pigskin original cover that comes with most Bibles you buy. Dealing with people in English will always be easier than in Japanese, even though my Japanese language ability is quite good now. And while there are book binders here, a lot of the Japanese Bibles I have seen are very subpar in quality which doesn't give me confidence in book binders here. If you see genuine leather on a Japanese Bible, it is usually a cover someone bought for it. Furthermore, a lot of Japanese book binders don't show details of their work online and certainly don't mail you samples of their leather like Leonard's Books. Lastly, Leonard's Books is a Christian-owned business who I wished to support with my business.

    How much was it it's good job

    • @JDW-
      @JDW-  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too much, honestly. I live in Japan. I paid them $17.10 for the samples shown in my video. I then paid about $25 to ship my Bible (25x17x4.5cm) and the samples back to them. They credited me $10 for the samples, which didn't include the $7.10 in shipping the samples to me, of course. After they received my bonded leather Bible, they quoted me $199.40. I told them I shipped the samples back, and that price dropped to $189.40. So in total, I paid $7.10 + $25 + 189.40 = $221.50. They did a wonderful job. But I cannot afford to do any other Bible because, being a family man, I just don't have the money. So if you have a rather large study Bible you are considering having rebound, keep in mind it will cost you around $200, even if you are based in the US and the shipping is cheaper. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @JDW-

      Leather liners weren't (and still aren't) offered with the "Cherry Bomber" thick full-grain leather cover that I chose. In 2012, Leonard's wrote an article explaining why they did not offer leather liners at all: bit.ly/38fooYO
      Then in 2013, Leonard's added two types of covers that would be available with leather liners (but not including the thick full-grain leather cover types): bit.ly/3hFz46e
      All said, a leather liner must be a very thin leather and even then it will add stiffness to the cover. My Cherry Bomber cover is a very thick leather, so adding a leather liner would make it stiffer. Leonard's does not say if that alone is the reason they still don't offer leather liners for the "bomber" style full grain leather covers. But maybe if you wrote to them and asked they might offer a more detailed explanation: eric@leonardsbooks.com

      Thank you for your questions. A “study Bible“ is simply a Bible that has an explanatory commentary inside. The presence of a commentary can help in the understanding of difficult passages in the Bible, but of course we put the priority on the words of the Bible text above any human written commentary. It could be pointed out that you failed to properly capitalize your sentence. Your punctuation is also incorrect. You created a run-on sentence by combining two separate sentences with a comma. Such critical observations are rooted in truth, yet they are not very pleasant to hear. That's why it's better to contemplate more balanced way to offer your sentiments to others. For example you could have instead said, "I somewhat liked your video, but I thought you talked a bit too much because I like videos with less commentary." That would have been a well-reasoned yet honest criticism that obviously was authored by an educated mind. At times when you feel you could not be so balanced, it would perhaps be most prudent to simply not say anything at all.
      Videos you watch here on TH-cam were created by your fellow man who share the same feelings you have. Strive to treat others in the same way you yourself would want to be treated. Doing so usually works out well everyone in the end. Have a great day!
