  • Fuji's latest low-budget kit lens is smaller than their previous options, and it's also the standard zoom kit lens with the widest possible angle on the market today. Let's see if it's any good.

Fuji needs to make a high quality version of this lens. The size is great for someone that wants a smaller zoom lens. Even the 18 to 55 seems quite large.

this lens is underrated. i have both this lens and XF 18-55mm. i may prefer sharpness on this lens over XF 18-55mm. the XF version isn't just as sharp as this XC lens on its widest aperture.

Great review. Also, it appears to be one of the best options for vlogging. Basically buying Fuji X-S10 / 15-45 kit is the best option as to price/size/video quality. All reviews say that the picture from this glass is actually pretty good. 15mm gives that bit of wider angle that helps while vlogging. I first thought about X-S10 / 16-80 kit, but now seriously think about buying X-S10 / 15-45 kit and a 35mm f/2 prime with the saved money. Or maybe even instead X-S10 / 15-45 kit + Viltrox 23 f/1.4 + Viltrox 33 f/1.4 - almost for the same money as just one X-S10 / 16-80 kit.

I've got XS 10 + 15-45. It is small, light AND NB! - has OIS! Add to this better than average IQ and exceptional affordablity - and it's almost perfect! If I ever switch to some other lens - it would be 10-24, but it is chunkier and like 7 times the price! Constant aperture and dramatic wide angle + better built quality with normal zoom are main pros for this one though. On the other hand I cover all my needs with some 3-party MF glasses, and with Viltrox 85 f1.8 for some dramatic bokeh portraits.

Nice job, as usual Christopher. I just also watched your review of the new Fuji version of the Sigma 18-50 f2.8. I’m trying to decide whether to buy it or not. Because you’ve used slightly different terminology (like “just OKish”) it’s hard to tell which of these three has the best image quality on overlapping focal lengths, this 15-45, the 16-80, or the Sigma. Which do you think has best image quality?

While I will prefer it to be a manual zoom, I love how compact this is. Tgt with a xt20, it is very very light and compact and versatile.

I have the XT100. I just bought it 4 days ago. I cant figure out how to do so many things with the camera. I am used to Canon interface which is much easier, but I like Fuji because the colours and detail produced is superior to Canon. I wish Fuji would use Canons interface, then I would love the camera. Anyways, how do you zoom the lens in 3x. I can get my lens to zoom.

  • @JungleCatImages

I think this being wider (and cheaper) is the clincher for me, 22.5mm vs 27mm for the 'kit'.. by all accounts the 18-55 kit is amazing, but I don't like to shoot zooms.. I keep one around just in case something goes wrong with a lens or maybe to go to the beach with my kids.. these 15-45 can be had for $100-$150.. half the price of the 18 55, which despite the rave reviews I haven't been able to pull the trigger on buying.. Thanks for all the great reviews

15-45 is sharper than 18-55 and can pseudo macro like the 16 1.4. Also extremely lightweight making it really a very portable flexible lens. The 16-80 is a step up in image quality with more usable range but I don't always want to carry something that heavy, and certainly not the 16-55.

The biggest issue of this lens is that it does not display actual focal lenght in camera at all. Other weaknesses is terrible zooming experience and lack of step-zoom option where it would jump in "classic" focal lengths (22,5 - 24 - 28 - 35 - 50 - 67,5). It would be so easy to solve in fw update and make this lens a little marvel... but no luck. Sony does it with RX100 series, I dont know why Fuji cant...

Subscribed. Thanks for a great overview of this lens! Only decent review I've found on TH-cam for it. You've covered things such as the close focus distance at maximum zoom, and the biggest aperture when zoomed in a bit - very useful info which is often left out because it's not in Fuji's specifications. I'm contemplating picking up the cheap and cheerful X-A7 as it does 4K@30, so it's nice to see what the bundled lens can do. Thanks :)

The information that the zoom remembers the focal length is not entirely true (maybe it is worth adding some inscription about it in the video?). Only selected cameras have this option (e.g. X-A and X-T30 series and a few others). Other cameras (including professional ones) do not have this and then, even after switching to the Play function, the zoom is set to a focal length of 15mm.

If this is the case, can you take a shot and then review it to find out the focal? Maybe that would be possible on some bodies and not others? Cheers again :)

Highly appreciated for bringing to light one of the most underrated lens. Infact I'm inching closer to replace my sparingly used xf14 with this one. No doubt xf14 is a sharp and superb lens, however since the use is very much limited, hence I'm considering to replace this with something really capable and low cost. Only downside with 15-45 is lack of manual zoom, not sure how the electronic zoom functions, to select precisely the desired focal length... pls advise.

Chris test lenses at their limits, I like his videos but I take them with a grain of salt. There maybe some barrel distortion but it is nicely corrected. This is a really great lens, I have seen output from this lens uncropped and it shows really nice images. The mechanical performance of the lens itself is not up to par with most other Fuji lenses, is an XC series after all. If Fuji would release a XF version people would be flocking. I myself care only about the optics so I am buying one today.

Amazing one number makes this much difference. Going from 16 to 15. I have had some really sharp center sharpness on my 16-50, though. These sure help keeping the total weight down on the X-H1. Not quite sure combining both the obis and ibis raises the bar yet. They might be competing with each other.

    • @michaelm1
      @michaelm1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I own it and I can say that it's oversized and deadly sharp:-). It's a great lens if you like the focal length. Remeber, it's an equivalent of 135mm lens on a fullframe. It has an aperture ring with 1/3 steps and a rather wide focusing ring, which only sends electronic signals and the quad linear motor then moves the elements into position, so there is a bit of a lag if you MF. I'm not too happy about that, but I can work with it. The AF is speedy, though. The lens can focus close, it can magnify more than the 56mm f/1.2, but it's not a macro. They say that it's the sharpest lens in the Fuji XF lineup and while I don't own the whole lineup to test the hypothesis, I am quite inclined to believe it. I know that I'm no Christopher Frost and I'd certainly love to hear what he has to say about the lens, but if you have any questions for someone who owns it, I'll be happy to answer them.

I've drowned this kitlens in the Seine in Paris , if someone wants it for free just dive and find it :) i love this lens, it is really great for shooting on 15mm while traveling, because i can fit all the large objects from close distantion. But i really don't like this electronic zoom thing, especially in cold (Russian winter cold) conditions it stops working

Great review as always and nice to see this lens‘ performance. But lets be honest, this lens is not really made for real photographers, it‘s more for families, people that buy a small camera and want to take pictures of holidays and their events. It has automated zoom which is exactly what those people expect and it has a flexible focal range that starts really wide, also great for families and snapshots of groups. The price of the lens doesn‘t matter that much because it comes in the kit with some cameras for just a little more than the body only, so it‘s much cheaper than buying it itself. In the store I just quickly checked for example the X-T100 with that lens is not even $100 more than the body itself would be.
Although I appreciate your review and I know that some serious photographers might be interested in that lens, including myself, this isn‘t really the most interesting lens to deep dive in first because it was not made with photographers only in mind, more with non photographers I think... the 18-55mm kit lens would be more interesting because it‘s one that quite a few photographers actually use and appreciate and then there’s also all the great prime lenses and some more professional zoom lenses.
