  • Of marriage, Jesus said, “What God has joined together, let no one separate” (Mt 19:6). But is divorce always a sin, and is it ever allowed by the Church? How does it differ from an annulment which, contrary to popular belief, is not a “Catholic divorce”? Join Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, as he sheds light on this important subject. Then hear the remarkable story of a man whose radical career change led him and his family to start a farm to feed the poor.
    Watch Fr. Chris Alar, MIC and the Marian Fathers and Brothers from the National Shrine of Divine Mercy on our new show Living Divine Mercy airing every Wednesday at 6:30pm EST on EWTN. Through teaching segments, Bible and St. Faustina Diary excerpts, as well as real-life examples of people who are living Divine Mercy in their lives, you will learn why Jesus said Divine Mercy is mankind's last hope of salvation! Thank God the Church doesn’t punish the spouse who is divorced through no fault or desire of their own. To be denied the Eucharist would be devastating.

      Agree. Sadly, I know many women who are divorced and not remarried, but believe that they must self exclude themselves from receiving the Holy Eucharist.

    I will ALWAYS hate that my marriage failed. We were too immature , even after 17 years to make it work. Our marriage was annulled and eventually God brought me my spouse (through prayer) and we have a truly BLESSED marriage. Is it perfect? No, but with Jesus between us, it's as close to heaven on earth as we can make it.
    So many people invite His to the WEDDING BUT FORGET to invite JESUS to the marriage!!!

    Thank you Father Chris for this important and necessary information on divorce and annulment. Our society needs more education, and tonight’s show provided it. Father Kaz could not have explained it any more clearly. The topic hit home for me; Church teaching is church teaching. Divorce is ugly and hideous on every level, but at times necessary, and I appreciate the explanation of what is tolerated. I pray for the souls of all , especially Catholics who have been down this road. Offering many prayers for all those who’ve traveled this road, as it’s a rough and difficult journey.

      Chris. I want to do right by God's law. My partner/boyfriend now just got baptized. I was married on a protestant church then got divorced. Is that a valid one? I am back on the Catholic church now. Under the Catholic church was my marriage and divorce a valid one?

    The day our friends the Nickels received the news of owning their farm, Jan 6, 2022, was the day of our restaurant’s fire! (Just discovered this!) By a miracle the fire burned itself out before it could burn down the building, so we knew the Lord intends something yet for us there. But we are still struggling in the storm, not yet reopened. Please pray for us and our “Divine Mercy-sharing” restaurant.

      I did not get to see this or hear of it. I wrote the pope for my father I got an answer. All is for asked to fill out papers about the incidents. My mother was not a Catholic. My father loved her even to the end, but she wanted to divorce not him the pope granted and annulment and rightly so if you’re going to try to deny this now and say he couldn’t, he wouldn’t he didn’t you’re wrong. My father was a wonderful Catholic, he followed the commandments and he was right to do so. I’m very proud of my father, and I do love my mother, but she was so wrong. My father then was allowed to remarry all legitimate by the pope. He went without communion for a long time, but I had to write and give my opinion of what happened so that he could receive sacraments. I never knew another man that was so honest, so caring and so kind ever.

    There should be more support for Catholics who endured abusive marriages and had to divorce - and get annulments- the abuser is a difficult person with kids involved going forward and it’s a cross to bear - on top of being a single parent low income - mostly it seems God wants me to be isolated and misunderstood. I accept it but it’s been hard .

    Thank you so much for this explanation of sacramental and legal marriage, Father Chris. I’m a baptized Catholic who wasn’t aware of the church’s teachings on marriage and divorce. I wasn’t married in a Catholic Church so I’m not committing adultery is how I understand it. But if I wanted to marry in the church, I’d talk to a priest to be sure an annulment isn’t needed. Thanks for clarifying this! Lots of confusion about what the catechism says. I didn’t get this in CCD class.

      Hi Father, If married in a civil marriage but not in the eyes of God or the Catholic Church would it not be the case of fornication if living with another man? Obviously still serious sin. In legal terms it would be classed as adultery.

    • @ellenmaguire194
      @ellenmaguire194 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry Father, I’m a bit confused. If the first marriage was in a hotel, then it’s not a mortal sin to get a legal divorce as you are actually living in sin? If you do get divorced but live with someone else, that would be formication, not adultery as the first marriage wasn’t valid in the eyes of God or the Catholic Church. You could however go on to marry in the Catholic Church without an annulment as first marriage wasn’t recognised?

    Father, I hope you will answer. What if one or both potential spouses have verified medical issues that may render them unable to have children, but they still wish to marry? This is a potential situation in our extended family. As well, what if a spouse is possibly impotent from an injury, but, firstly, can’t be sure because of living chastely; and, secondly, can’t be sure because of the possibility of medical interventions; and, in either case, the fiancé has accepted the situation? Another potential family situation. Thank you.

    You said in another video, that even if two baptized people were not married in the church, the marriage was still valid. You stated otherwise here. So a marriage between 2 baptized people, that took place at city hall, is not valid and can be annulled?

      No we did not say it is not valid. We said it is not sacramental.

    My husband is living with another woman for 14 years now. Does God recognize civil marriage. I do not understand why my husband and his mistress are more prosperous than me. I do not feel as blessed.

      Thank you but according to Christian teaching suffering is of higher value than material prosperity although we might not always understand it

    If one spouse does not love the other when they get married, is it still valid?

    • @DivineMercy_Official
      @DivineMercy_Official  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It depends . If they had no intent of being faithful or remaining in the in marriage then no it would not be valid

      Why does it seem that the church is giving annulments like if it’s candy . Something needs to be done about that

    Fr. Chris, pleass advise. My husband left me with a 3 y.o , 17 years ago . I am divorced but never went thru with annullment, could not get the courage even to date. Now, the 21 y.o is still sufferring the effects. My ex feels justified in leaving us. Today he is remarried to the hindu outside gf, now his wife. We no longer speak as he does not want to help us. Anyway, the hindu girl/ wife receives COMMUNION in the RCchurch, because she enrolled in the RCIA. is this acceptable??? My son has to witness this...i think this is abomination! How much hurt!!

      It would not be acceptable until the person came into the Catholic Church and if she is married to a man who does not have an annulment then she should not be receiving holy communion.

    The Catholic Church hands out annulments like candy. Indeed, I doubt she denies anybody an annulment.
