JJ Watt, but a more athletic version of Watt. Watt does not a the 40" vertical it would take to HJ 6'7" using the scissors method.

What a great player Doug Atkins was. He was awful fun to watch. He crunched my Cowboys plenty...

I was at his last game. 12 years old. The refs did a bad call against the Steelers. I believe it was because it was Doug's last game. After the game there was a retirement ceremony in the middle of the field. He may not of known it because he was walking towards the locker room talking to a Steeler or 2. The Steeler player he was talking to told him they had the ceremony. Then he walked to the middle of the field.
I went to 5 games that year. Tickets were 2.50 youth. 5.00 adult. Me and my 2 brothers would get the players autographs when they were nearing the locker room. Doug Atkins was always 1st in the locker room. I'm 5.2 now. Probably around 4.2 then. I came up to his waist.
That year we also saw Atlanta, San Francisco. Cleveland, and Washington with Vince Lombardi as coach.
After the Washington game we hung out after the game. Saw the Redskins on the bus. Some fans talking to the players on the bus. Asking where Sonny Jurgensen was because he wasn't on the bus.
It was so enjoyable when the Saints played at Tulane Stadium.
    R.I.P. Doug Atkiins

Too bad things like Sacks weren't counted in that era. You don't see guys like him nowadays, one cool highlight play after the other. Somehow the 60s and 70s Nfl had a little more magic with iconic players. Not todays community of murderers, wife beaters and drug abusers.

+Stoertebeker ! All that sort of stuff used to happen, it just never got out. John Niland wigged out on acid when he was playing with the Cowboys. Big Daddy Lipscomb died of an OD. I worked with a woman who used to work with the wife of a member of the NFL All-70's team, she'd regularly show up with black eyes and such after the local team lost. Jim Tyrer and OJ both killed their wives. Even a lot of the great stories about Doug Atkins have to do with his prodigious consumption of alcohol. Not saying it's right, just that there never were any "good old days"

As usual, a team thinks that a player's best years are behind him... and in the Bears defense, he HAD been playing for 14 seasons.

He and my grandfather were high school classmates and lifelong friends. I have a few stories about the man.
My father was at college, and when he came home for break, he found that the toilet seat in his parents’ home had been replaced because it hadn’t been designed for men Doug’s size, and it shattered beneath him.
I met him once, at my grandfather’s funeral. He was a Goliath of a man, even at the time. Biggest person I had ever met to that point.
My grandfather was the football star in high school, while Atkins starred in other sports. Grandpa didn’t go to college, but Atkins did. They went on totally different paths.
