This guy was a Tennessee guy through and through.. biggest man in the Hall of Fame..he was also the unanimous player of the quarter century in the SEC 1950-74..he was a friendly, good ole boy but was a terrifying menace on the field, and could be equally fierce off it..he was the strongest man in the NFL, and most estimates was he was the strongest man in the world.. players were terrified of him because of his brute strength and size and could be a nasty human being..Dick Butkus said he was the only player he was ever scared of..a punk like Romanowski, I wish Doug was around when he played..he would have come off the sidelines and obliterated him physically even with a suspension..even Goodell's goons would have feared him.. Doug was the most feared and respected man to ever play professional football

Like Wilt Chamberlain he would step into any era and would be a star! Not many guys like that I can think of in any sport. Gordie Howe & Ted Williams.

I met Doug Atkins briefly back in the 1980s. A friend of mine who was the middle linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings introduced me to him.

The NFL didn’t officially keep track of sacks until 1982. In all likelihood Atkins is the all time leader in sacks.

Doug was a kind man and a VFL. But Lord help you if you had to play against him.

The entire Eagles' defense needs 11 Doug Atkins the way they've been playing lately.

Too bad they didn't count sacks back then he'd easily be all time leader.he got 16 in one game fact. It was before my time i was 6-7 when the old man sent him to the saints in 66-67. You pissed him off or cut his knees it was over for the opposite team. 6ft 8in 275-80 lbs of nothing but muscle can high jump 7 ft a man among boys. I played high school ball as a safty i could never bulk up no matter how i tried tall 6ft 5in 170 lbs of lanky long hair ( a 70s teen & rock n roller) fast as a gazelle but no ass to be a D lineman my true passion ( i love the trenches) no problem at least i got to play. But my soft spot is for the D line. To ming the merciless ( steve mc michael that mongo shit started in his wrestling career he was ming before then) you among other Bear great linemen are my heros. Nuff said
