  • Like many industries, technology is fundamentally changing the way manufacturers operate and compete in the 2020s. Industry 4.0/5.0, IoT, ERP, and AI are just a few of the technologies that are disrupting manufacturing as we know it.
In this week’s podcast interview, I discuss the topic with Walker Reynolds of Intellic and 4.0 Solutions. Walker’s honest and unfiltered view of the industry is a must-listen for anyone in this industry!

Thanks for sharing. Sad I could not pose the question live. But, the moment you start a Digital Transformation journey, you don’t start from nowhere. There are always projects out there running in a company. My understanding is, in Manufacturing, the technical transition starts with a MVP, a low hanging fruit, something, that coveys the value of the architectural approach (UNS) - possibly by generating direct value (insight/transparency into a process). And this does usually not include the redesign of your ERP. I see larger corporations transforming their ERP (moving to cloud) and alongside modifying all their business processes and this also technical interfaces (IT/OT) to all that is connected. It seems like an endless endeavor and through its impact disrupting the underlying operation. It’s also labelled digital transformation. Given that scenario, one is inclined to wait til dust settles before starting the process bottom up. I guess this is not an uncommon scenario and I was wondering which advice you two with your decade long experience in the domains would give the community to tackle this challenge. Thanks in advance and keep up the incredibly valuable work!

    **UNS for Small Manufacturer** :
I have been thinking how Walker, just by creating UNS for all the data points from HIM stored in a data base increased the production unless someone was exploring the data base that stored the
    a) operator's entry for machine setting,
    b) his commands during operations ( like its done for electronics signatures in pharma for audit trails)
within their data base and your smart engineer must have studied the data base and plotted production speed for a specific printing type against the various settings that different operators made for the same system (machine or printing press) and different ways of operating (instead of using standard recipe kind of settings for a specific printing) and must have observed the bad production rates by poorly trained operator in some shift !!
Its the analytics that may have helped increase the production to double rather than the UNS ? Correct me here for my inferences !!

Eric wanted to take a different approach on this one. He wanted to ‘interview’ Walker for this podcast and then Walker will ‘interview’ him on our podcast. The goal is to get a little more deep with the conversations. You’ll hear a lot more from Eric when Walker does his interview!

    Two Takeaways for me
    1) Industry 0.0 interesting , democratization of knowledge by printing books !! Excellent point , i will steal this point in my presentations too.
    2) "Pathway to Security in your business is through digital fluency" needs more explanations , how are you mitigating all present and future threats in your super fluent solution ? If Amazon or FB got hacked do you really think they will announce it as attacked or report it as glitch to public?
    Data breaches :
    Facebook. Date: April 2021
    LinkedIn. Date: April 2021
Real Estate Wealth Network. Date: December 2023
Location: North America Year: 2023 Cost: $356 million USD
This attack, which has succeeded in disrupting operations of a major American goods manufacturer
Mondelez International food and beverage company) Location: Based in Chicago Year: 2017
    Cost: $100 million USD
Brunswick Corporation Year: 2023 Cost: $85 million USD
Applied Materials Year: 2023 Cost: $250 million USD
These companies were not digital fluent?

Go read the RCA for each of the breaches - you’ll be surprised what they found.
